Abstract
In the production of acetylene and ethylene by pyrolysis of hydrocarbons by contact with a combustion gas obtained by feeding fuel gas and comburent gas through pairs of opposed jets downwardly inclined at an angle to the axis of the combustion chamber and arranged on a circle concentric with the axis and having a diameter greater than half the diameter of the combustion chamber the momenta of the fuel and comburent gases are controlled to direct the resultant flames radially inwards. In one embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), using jets at 45 degrees to the axis and 90 degrees to each other, the momenta are arranged so that the resultant vector EF crosses the plane at which hydrocarbons are introduced on a circle having half the diameter of the chamber. This is alternatively arranged by having jets at appropriate angles, Fig. 6 (not shown), and using equal momenta or by a combination of the two methods. Steam may also be injected.
