Abstract
<PICT:0783664/IV (a)/1> Polyethylene surfaces, e.g. films, are contacted with a flame having a temperature of at least 4000 DEG F. under such conditions that the surface cools rapidly and the object treated is not distorted. The flame 19 preferably strikes the film 11 at an angle of at least 10 degrees, so that the surface passes through the secondary cone 23 at a point between the tip of the primary cone 22 and 1/2 to 2 1/2 primary cone lengths from the tip, so that combustion products do not condense on the surface. The film, supported on a cooled roll, may be treated by a row of individual flames spaced 1/8 inch apart and produced by burning a mixture of oxygen and fuel gas such as propane, butane, ethane, ethylene, acetylene, natural gas or mixtures thereof. The treated surfaces have improved ink adhesion and heat sealability. Specification 704,665 is referred to.
