Abstract

<PICT:0998491/C4-C5/1> A gas mixture capable of being burnt in piloted and unpiloted burners at increased issuing speeds without backfire is made by mixing with air (a) a slow burning gas other than methane having a flame speed less than 5 ft./sec., preferably less than 3 ft./sec., e.g. propane or butane, and (b) a fast-burning gas of flame speed more than 8 ft./sec., e.g. hydrogen or acetylene. The hydrogen when used constitutes 40-75%, preferably 50-65% of (a) and (b) by volume. As shown, propane is supplied under pressure from a pipe 11 through a needle valve 12 and entrains at 13 hydrogen supplied under pressure through a pipe and valve 14, 15. The mixed gases are mixed with air, supplied under pressure, through pipe and valve 16, 17, at 18 and burn in a burner 19.
