Abstract
<PICT:0720371/III/1> A protective furnace atmosphere for heat treatment or hard soldering of parts requiring a reducing atmosphere is obtained by vaporizing and cracking methyl alcohol and converting at least part of the carbon monoxide formed by steam into hydrogen and carbon dioxide. A mixture of methyl alcohol and water from a tank 8 is fed to a reaction chamber 5 through a vaporizing tube 31 surrounding an electric heating element 6 and is converted in an upper zone in contact with a cracking catalyst to hydrogen and carbon monoxide which, with the steam generated, is converted in a lower zone containing a catalyst 12 to carbon dioxide and hydrogen. Moisture is condensed in a tube 33 surrounded by a scrubber-cooler 35 over the wetted packing of which the cracked gases pass to a storage container 45, carbon dioxide being dissolved and removed with the wash water. A valve 42 in the outlet pipe enables a pressure of at least 3 and preferably over 10 atmospheres to be created by the vaporization. In a modification, the liquid is supplied by a pump responsive to changes in pressure in the outlet pipe and the vaporizer is heated by a burner fed by the cracked gas. A mixture suitable for nitriding may be obtained by using an ammonia-methyl alcohol solution and for carburizing or dry cyaniding a liquid rich in carbon, e.g. benzol, is added, or methyl alcohol vapour to which ammonia may be added is mixed with the cracked gas.
