Abstract

In a process for the vapour phase dehydrochlorination of chlorinated hydrocarbons known to undergo dehydrochlorination on heating in the vapour phase the heat necessary for carrying out such endothermic reaction is supplied to the reactor in which the dehydrochlorination of the chlorinated hydrocarbon is effected by the combustion of dry hydrogen with dry chlorine. The hot hydrogen chloride may be injected into the reactor to heat the chlorinated hydrocarbon directly or the chlorine-hydrogen flame may be used to heat ceramic or other particulate refractory material which is circulated to the reactor and returned for reheating. Hot hydrogen chloride may be passed through a bed of particulate inert refractory material which is cyclically transferred to reactor to provide a heat source for the dehydrochlorination of a vaporized chlorinated hydrocarbon and withdrawn for reheating. Vinyl chloride is produced from ethylene chloride in a packed reactor heated by the passage of a hot chlorine-hydrogen combustion product. Trichloroethylene is produced from tetrachloroethane, the heat being supplied by continuous cyclic supply and withdrawal of particulate inert refractory material which is heated in a chlorine-hydrogen combustion zone. In examples trichloroethylene is obtained by cracking tetrachloroethane in a reaction containing a boiling bed of sand, the sand being continually withdrawn, heated in a hydrogen chlorine reactor and recycled (1); and vinyl chloride is obtained by cracking ethylene dichloride in a reactor filled with sand or inert ceramic material, heat being supplied by injecting hot gas from a chlorine-hydrogen burner. Specification 697,482 is referred to.
