792,843. Liquid fuel-fired furnaces. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. Nov. 15, 1955 [Dec. 16, 1954], No. 36462/54. Class 51 (1). A method of operating a regenerative furnace comprises passing a petroleum oil, e.g. reduced crude oil, still bottoms, a residual fuel oil or a light virgin naphtha, into a preheating chamber which is at the cracking and vaporizing temperature of the oil passing a small quantity of air, preferably not more than 0.5 per cent by volume of the air needed to completely burn the oil, into the cracked and vaporized oil, allowing some combustion to take place to heat the cracked and vaporized oil and combustion gas mixture, and burning the resulting hot gaseous mixture, to which other combustible gas, e.g. producer gas, is added, if desired, in the furnace. When using light virgin naphtha, hydrocarbons boiling below 70‹ F. are removed therefrom before the naphtha enters the preheating chamber and passed direct to the furnace.
