본 출원은 미국 특허 가출원 번호 60/239,377(2000년 10월 11일 출원) 및 번호 60/270,351(2001년 2월 21일 출원)의 혜택을 청구한다.
본 발명은 대화형 텔레비전의 애플리케이션을 위한 시스템 및 방법에 관한 것이다. 특히, 본 발명은 대화형 텔레비전 애플리케이션 시스템에서 개별 데이터 소스(source)로부터 비주문형 미디어 데이터와 주문형 미디어 데이터를 검색(retrieve)하기 위한 시스템 및 방법에 관한 것이다.
케이블, 위성 및 방송 텔레비전 시스템은 사용자에게 수많은 채널을 제공한다. 종래에는 사용자들이 인쇄된 텔레비전 프로그램 일정표를 참고하여 특정시간에 방송되는 프로그램을 결정하였다. 좀더 최근에는 사용자의 텔레비전 상에 텔레비전 프로그램 정보가 표시되도록 하는 대화형 전자식 텔레비전 프로그램 안내가 개발되었다.
대화형 텔레비전 프로그램 안내는 전형적으로 텔레비전 셋톱 박스에 구현된다. 이러한 프로그램 안내에 의하여 사용자는 텔레비전 프로그램 리스트를 상이한 표시 형식으로 볼 수 있다. 예컨대, 사용자는 상기 프로그램 안내가 채널순 및 시간순 배열로 구성된 프로그램 리스트의 격자(grid)를 표시하도록 할 수 있다. 사용자는 또한 프로그램 리스트를 테마별로(예컨대, 영화, 스포츠 등) 또는 제목별로(예컨대 알파벳순) 탐색하고 정렬할 수 있다. 사용자는 특정의 프로그램 리스트에 대한 추가적인 정보를 입수할 수 있으며, 시청용 프로그램을 구입할 수도 있다.
일부 대화형 프로그램 안내 시스템은 주문형 비디오에 대한 리스트를 제공하기도 한다. 일부 시스템의 경우에, 상기 주문형 비디오 리스트는 텔레비전 프로그램과 같은 비주문형 미디어용 리스트 및 기타 정보를 제공하는 소스와는 별개인 데이터 소스로부터 제공된다. 예컨대, 주문형 비디오 서버는 프로그램 안내 데이터 또는 일반 텔레비전 프로그램과 동일 대역내, 또는 대역외로 주문형 비디오의 리스트를 프로그램 안내에 제공할 수 있다. 주문형 비디오 리스트가 대역내로 제공될 때, 프로그램 안내는 주문형 비디오 서버와의 연결을 (설정되어 있지 않은 경우) 설정해야 하며, 리스트를 검색하기 위해서는 사용자를 시청 중인 텔레비전 프로그램으로부터 벗어나게 해야 한다. 이로 인하여 사용자는 시청하고 있는 프로그램의 일부를 놓치게 된다. 또한 주문형 비디오 리스트가 대역외로 제공될 때에도 프로그램 가이드는 주문형 비디오 서버와의 연결을 (설정이 되어 있지 않은 경우) 설정하고, 리스트를 검색해야 한다. 상기의 방법에 있어서, 저 대역폭 연결은 주문형 비디오 리스트의 표시에 있어 수용 불가능한 지연을 초래할 수 있다. 게다가 일부 주문형 비디오 정보, 예컨대 신규 배포 리스트는 네트워크 전체를 통해 많은 사용자에 의하여 종종 액세스된다. 각 사용자의 장치는 정보가 필요할 때마다 서버와의 세션(session)을 설정하여야 한다. 이는 분배 네트워크에 있어서 거대한 최대자원(resource) 요구를 발생시킬 수도 있다.
따라서, 사용자의 시청 경험 중단 또는 애플리케이션 화면을 표시하는데 있어서의 지연 등과 같이 현재의 방법과 관련하여 바람직스럽지 못한 결과들을 줄일 수 있는 방법으로 개별적 데이터 소스로부터 비주문형 미디어 데이터와 주문형 미디어 테이터를 검색하기 위한 시스템 및 방법을 제공하는 것이 바람직하다.

본 명세서에서 사용된 것처럼, 비주문형 미디어는 사용자의 요청 없이도 사용자에게 제공되는 임의의 적절한 미디어일 수 있다. 예컨대, 비주문형 미디어는 텔레비전 프로그램, 오디오 프로그램, 또는 여타의 적절한 프로그램일 수 있다. 주문형 미디어는 사용자의 요청에 응답하여 사용자에게 제공되는 임의의 적절한 미디어일 수 있다. 예컨대, 주문형 미디어는 주문형 비디오 또는 주문형 오디오 미디어, 다운로드 가능한 소프트웨어, 또는 주문형 분배에 적합한 여타의 미디어일 수 있다.
주문형 및 비주문형 미디어용 데이터는 상기 미디어를 표시하거나 상기 미디어와 관련된 임의의 데이터일 수 있다. 예컨대, 비주문형 미디어 데이터에는 텔레비전 프로그램 제목, 추가적인 텔레비전 프로그램 정보, 텔레비전 프로그램 광고, 또는 유료시청 주문 정보가 있을 수 있다. 주문형 미디어 데이터에는 예컨대 주문형 비디오나 다운로드 가능한 소프트웨어의 제목 또는 설명이 있을 수 있다.
비주문형 미디어 데이터 및 주문형 미디어 데이터는 예컨대, 대화형 텔레비전 프로그램 안내 또는 가정내 장비에서 구동되는 기타 소프트웨어와 같은 대화형 텔레비전 애플리케이션에 의하여 개별적 데이터 소스로부터 검색될 수 있다. 주문형 미디어 데이터는 예컨대 비주문형 미디어 또는 비주문형 미디어 데이터와 동일 대역내 또는 대역외로 제공될 수 있다. 일부 실시예에서, 주문형 미디어 데이터는 예컨대 카루셀(carousel) 기반의 방법을 이용하여 연속적 또는 주기적 데이터 스트림으로서 제공될 수 있다. 기타의 실시예에서, 주문형 미디어 데이터는 클라이언트-서버 기반 방법을 이용하여 제공될 수도 있다.
예컨대, 시스템 지연(latency) 또는 사용자의 시청 경험 중단 등을 줄이기 위해 주문형 미디어 데이터가 자동적으로 검색되고 캐시된다. 주문형 미디어를 캐시하는 것은 주문형 미디어 데이터를 분배하는 네트워크 상의 최대 부하를 줄이기 위해 사용자간에 시간상으로 엇갈리게 배치될 수 있다. 주문형 미디어 데이터는 예컨대 주기적으로 또는 사용자가 특정의 인터페이스를 호출할 때 캐시될 수 있다. 일부 방법에 있어서는, 캐시가 예측가능할 수도 있다. 예컨대, 주어진 표시로부터 사용자가 접근할 수 있는 특징에 대한 주문형 미디어 데이터가 캐시될 수 있다. 기타의 방법에 있어서는, 가장 인기있는 주문형 미디어 데이터가 캐시될 수도 있다.또 다른 방법에 있어서, 캐시된 데이터가 개인화될 수도 있다. 예컨대, 사용자 활동이 모니터될 수 있으며, 사용자의 이력에 기초하여 주문형 미디어가 캐시될 수 있다. 여타의 적절한 예측성 캐시가 사용될 수 있다.
주문형 미디어 데이터는 표시를 위해 캐시로부터 검색될 수 있다. 예컨대, 주문형 미디어 데이터는 일례로 적어도 비주문형 미디어 리스트의 표시에 나타난 비주문형 데이터를 액세스하고자 하는 사용자의 요구 표시에 응답하여 캐시로부터 검색되고, 표시될 수 있다. 일부 실시예에 있어서, 비주문형 미디어 리스트는 주문형 미디어 리스트 또는 기타 콘텐츠, 예컨대 패널 또는 배너 광고 등과 함께 표시될 수 있다.
대화형 텔레비전의 애플리케이션에서 사용되는 것으로서, 복수의 소스로부터 비주문형 및 주문형 미디어 데이터를 캐시하는 시스템 및 방법은 임의의 적절한 하드웨어 플랫폼 또는 토폴로지(topology)에 기초할 수 있다. 적절한 하드웨어에는 예컨대 위성 수신기, 개인용 컴퓨터 텔레비전(PC/TVS), 개인용 컴퓨터(예컨대 텔레비전 수신 카드를 구비함), 케이블 셋톱 박스, 또는 여타의 적절한 하드웨어가 포함될 수 있다.

Claims (79)

  1. 비주문형 미디어 데이터 소스에 의하여 비주문형 미디어 데이터가 제공되고, 주문형 미디어 데이터 소스에 의하여 주문형 미디어 데이터가 제공되며, 상기 비주문형 및 주문형 미디어 데이터 소스는 별개인 것인 대화형 텔레비전 애플리케이션 시스템에서 사용하기 위한 데이터 검색(retrieve) 방법에 있어서,
    상기 비주문형 미디어 데이터 소스로부터 상기 비주문형 미디어 데이터를 검색하는 단계와;
    상기 주문형 미디어 데이터 소스로부터 상기 주문형 미디어 데이터를 자동으로 검색하는 단계와;
    상기 주문형 미디어 데이터를 자동으로 캐시하는 단계와;
    적어도 상기 주문형 미디어 데이터를 액세스하라는 사용자 지시에 응답하여 캐시로부터 상기 주문형 미디어 테이터를 표시하는 단계와;
    적어도 상기 비주문형 미디어 데이터를 액세스하라는 사용자 지시에 응답하여 상기 비주문형 미디어 데이터를 표시하는 단계를 포함하는 데이터 검색 방법.
  2. 제1항에 있어서, 검색된 상기 비주문형 미디어 데이터는 텔레비전 프로그램 리스트 데이터인 것인 데이터 검색 방법.

    상기 주문형 미디어 데이터를 자동으로 캐시하는 단계와;
    적어도 상기 주문형 미디어 데이터를 액세스하라는 사용자 지시에 응답하여 캐시로부터 상기 주문형 미디어 테이터를 표시하는 단계와;
    적어도 상기 비주문형 미디어 데이터를 액세스하라는 사용자 지시에 응답하여 상기 비주문형 미디어 데이터를 표시하는 단계를 포함한 방법을 수행하는 기계 판독 가능 명령어로 부호화되는 것인 컴퓨터 판독 가능 매체.

    상기 통신 장치로 하여금 상기 비주문형 미디어 데이터 소스로부터 상기 비주문형 미디어 데이터를 검색하도록 지시하며,
    상기 통신 장치로 하여금 상기 주문형 미디어 데이터 소스로부터 상기 주문형 미디어 데이터를 자동적으로 검색하도록 지시하며,
    상기 주문형 미디어 데이터를 상기 캐시 메모리에 자동으로 캐시하며;
    상기 사용자 입력 장치로부터 적어도 상기 주문형 미디어 데이터를 액세스하라는 사용자 지시에 응답하여 상기 표시 장치로 하여금 상기 캐시 메모리에 있는 상기 주문형 미디어 테이터를 표시하도록 지시하며;
    상기 사용자 입력 장치로부터 적어도 상기 비주문형 미디어 데이터를 액세스하라는 사용자 지시에 응답하여 상기 표시 장치로 하여금 상기 비주문형 미디어 데이터를 표시하라고 지시하도록 프로그램되는 것인 데이터 검색용 시스템.
