Abstract
Description
Claims (31)
- 対向する一対の基板と、上記一対の基板間に挟持された物質層とを備え、上記一対の基板間に電界を印加することによって表示を行う表示素子であって、
上記物質層は、ネマティック液晶相を示す液晶性媒質を含み、かつ、電界無印加時に光学的等方性を示し、電界の印加により光学的異方性を発現すると共に、
上記ネマティック液晶相を示す液晶性媒質のネマティック相状態における、550nmでの屈折率異方性をΔnとし、1kHzでの誘電率異方性の絶対値を|Δε|とすると、
Δn×|Δε|が1.9以上であることを特徴とする表示素子。 - 上記Δnが0.14以上であり、かつ、上記|Δε|が14以上であることを特徴とする請求項1記載の表示素子。
- 上記Δn×|Δε|が4.0以上であることを特徴とする請求項1記載の表示素子。
- 上記Δnが0.2以上であり、かつ、上記|Δε|が20以上であることを特徴とする請求項3記載の表示素子。
- 上記Δεが負であることを特徴とする請求項1記載の表示素子。
- 上記一対の基板間に、上記電界の印加による光学的異方性の発現を促進するための配向補助材が設けられていることを特徴とする請求項1〜5の何れか1項に記載の表示素子。
- 上記配向補助材は、上記物質層内に形成されていることを特徴とする請求項6記載の表示素子。
- 上記配向補助材は、構造的異方性を有することを特徴とする請求項7記載の表示素子。
- 上記配向補助材は、上記物質層中の液晶性媒質が液晶相を呈している状態で形成されたものであることを特徴とする請求項7記載の表示素子。
- 上記配向補助材は、重合性化合物からなることを特徴とする請求項7記載の表示素子。
- 上記配向補助材は、高分子化合物からなることを特徴とする請求項7記載の表示素子。
- 上記配向補助材は、鎖状高分子化合物、網目状高分子化合物、および環状高分子化合物からなる群より選ばれる少なくとも一種の高分子化合物からなることを特徴とする請求項11記載の表示素子。
- 上記配向補助材は、水素結合体からなることを特徴とする請求項7記載の表示素子。
- 上記配向補助材は、多孔質材料からなることを特徴とする請求項7記載の表示素子。
- 上記配向補助材は、上記物質層中の液晶性媒質を小領域に分割することを特徴とする請求項7記載の表示素子。
- 上記小領域の大きさが可視光波長以下であることを特徴とする請求項15記載の表示素子。
- 上記配向補助材は、上記一対の基板のうち少なくとも一方の基板に設けられた水平配向膜であることを特徴とする請求項7記載の表示素子。
- 上記水平配向膜にはラビング処理または光照射処理が施されていることを特徴とする請求項17に記載の表示素子。
- 上記水平配向膜は、上記一対の基板の各々に設けられていると共に、上記ラビング処理または光照射処理における、ラビング方向または光照射方向が、互いに平行または反平行となるように配されていることを特徴とする請求項18記載の表示素子。
- 上記物質層の厚みをd(μm)、入射光の波長をλ(nm)とすると、λ/4≦Δn×d≦3λ/4を満足することを特徴とする請求項19記載の表示素子。
- 上記水平配向膜は、上記一対の基板の各々に設けられていると共に、上記ラビング処理または光照射処理における、ラビング方向または光照射方向が、互いに直交するように配されていることを特徴とする請求項18記載の表示素子。
- 上記物質層の厚みをd(μm)とすると、350(nm)≦Δn×d≦650(nm)を満足することを特徴とする請求項21記載の表示素子。
- 上記物質層に、さらに微粒子が封入されていることを特徴とする請求項1〜5の何れか1項に記載の表示素子。
- 上記物質層に、電界の2次に比例して屈折率が変化する媒質が封入されていることを特徴とする請求項1〜23の何れか1項に記載の表示素子。
- 上記物質層に、有極性分子を含有する媒質が封入されていることを特徴とする請求項1〜24の何れか1項に記載の表示素子。
- 上記物質層は、一方向の掌性のみの捩れ構造をなすことを特徴とする請求項1〜25の何れか1項に記載の表示素子。
- 上記物質層に、カイラル性を示す媒質が封入されていることを特徴とする請求項1〜26の何れか1項に記載の表示素子。
- 上記液晶性媒質は、400nm以下の選択反射波長域または螺旋ピッチを有することを特徴とする請求項1〜27の何れか1項に記載の表示素子。
- 上記物質層は、誘電性物質からなる誘電性物質層であることを特徴とする請求項1〜28の何れか1項に記載の表示素子。
- 上記一対の基板の基板面法線方向に電界を発生させて上記物質層に電界を印加する電界印加手段を備えていることを特徴とする請求項1〜29の何れか1項に記載の表示素子。
- 請求項1〜30の何れか1項に記載の表示素子を備えていることを特徴とする表示装置。
