Description
上記捩れのピッチが、可視光波長領域内もしくは可視光波長未満のピッチであると、上記物質層中、具体的には、上記誘電性物質層に含まれる上記媒質中に外場の印加によって生じる一方向の捩れによって、入射した光に旋光性が生じ、効率良く光を取り出すことができる。このため、上記の構成によれば、低い電圧で最大透過率を得ることができ、駆動電圧が低く、かつ、光の利用効率に優れた表示素子を実現することができるという効果を奏する。
1.ラビングされた配向膜8・9間で生じる位相差

一方、上記表示素子20には、配向膜が設けられておらず、ラビング処理も施されていないので、上記の位相差に起因する光漏れは生じない。したがって、上記表示素子20によれば、上記比較用表示素子50よりも高いコントラストを得ることができる。

Claims (24)
- 少なくとも一方が透明な一対の基板と、
上記両基板間に挟持された物質層とを備え、
上記物質層は、外場の印加によって光学的異方性の程度が変化する液晶性物質を含み、
上記両基板間に外場を印加することによって上記液晶性物質の光学的異方性の程度を変化させて表示を行うと共に、
光学的異方性が発現している状態における上記液晶性物質中の分子の配向方向が、一方向の掌性のみの捩れ構造をなすことを特徴とする表示素子。 - 上記液晶性物質は、外場印加時または外場無印加時に光学的等方性を示すことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の表示素子。
- 上記捩れ構造における捩れのピッチが、可視光波長領域内もしくは可視光波長未満のピッチであることを特徴とする請求項1または2に記載の表示素子。
- 上記液晶性物質に、カイラル剤が添加されていることを特徴とする請求項1または2に記載の表示素子。
- 上記液晶性物質とカイラル剤との合計量における上記カイラル剤の割合が、8重量%以上、80重量%以下の範囲内であることを特徴とする請求項4に記載の表示素子。
- 上記液晶性物質とカイラル剤との合計量における上記カイラル剤の割合が、30重量%以上、80重量%以下の範囲内であることを特徴とする請求項4に記載の表示素子。
- 上記液晶性物質は、当該液晶性物質自体がカイラル性を示すカイラル物質であることを特徴とする請求項1または2に記載の表示素子。
- 上記液晶性物質は、負の誘電異方性を有する棒状分子を含有していることを特徴とする請求項1または2に記載の表示素子。
- 上記液晶性物質は、ネガ型液晶性化合物を含有していることを特徴とする請求項1または2に記載の表示素子。
- 上記ネガ型液晶性化合物のネマティック相状態における、550nmでの屈折率異方性をΔnとし、1kHzでの誘電率異方性の絶対値を|Δε|とすると、Δn×|Δε|が0.63より大きいことを特徴とする請求項9に記載の表示素子。
- 上記Δnおよび|Δε|が、Δn>0.128、かつ、|Δε|>4.9を満足することを特徴とする請求項10に記載の表示素子。
- 上記Δn×|Δε|が3.3以上であることを特徴とする請求項10に記載の表示素子。
- 上記Δnおよび|Δε|が、Δn≧0.183、かつ、|Δε|≧18を満足することを特徴とする請求項12に記載の表示素子。
- 上記液晶性物質は、有極性分子を含有していることを特徴とする請求項1または2に記載の表示素子。
- 上記液晶性物質は、
外場無印加時に光学的等方性を示し、
外場を印加することによって光学的異方性が発現することを特徴とする請求項1に記載の表示素子。 - 上記液晶性物質は、
外場無印加時に光学的異方性を示し、
外場を印加することによって光学的異方性が消失して、光学的等方性を示すことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の表示素子。 - 上記液晶性物質を構成する分子は、
外場印加時もしくは外場無印加時に、可視光波長未満のスケールでの秩序構造を有し、外場を印加することによって秩序構造が変化することを特徴とする請求項1または2に記載の表示素子。 - 上記液晶性物質はコレステリックブルー相を示す分子を含むことを特徴とする請求項1または2に記載の表示素子。
- 上記液晶性物質はスメクティックブルー相を示す分子を含むことを特徴とする請求項1または2に記載の表示素子。
- 上記両基板間に外場を印加する外場印加手段を備えていることを特徴とする請求項1または2記載の表示素子。
- 上記外場は電界であり、上記両基板には、上記両基板間に電界を印加するための電極がそれぞれ形成されていることを特徴とする請求項1〜20の何れか1項に記載の表示素子。
- 上記液晶性物質は、電界の2次に比例して屈折率が変化することを特徴とする請求項21に記載の表示素子。
- 上記物質層は、誘電性物質からなる誘電性物質層であることを特徴とする請求項1〜22の何れか1項に記載の表示素子。
- 請求項1〜23の何れか1項に記載の表示素子を備えていることを特徴とする表示装置。
