Description

【発明の詳細な説明】 本発明は、熱可塑性材料を非熱可塑性材料に接
合させるための方法に係る。
熱可塑性材料を熱硬化性材料へ融接により接合
させることは、そられの2つの材料が流動によつ
て融合しないために容易でない。熱可塑性材料は
流動するが、熱硬化性材料は流動しない。従つ
て、それらの2つの材料は溶接によつて融合しな
い。しかしながら、米国特許第3989778号明細書
に記載されている如く、2つの熱可塑性材料をレ
ーザ溶接により相互に接合させることは周知であ
る。
熱可塑性材料は、放射エネルギ源としてレーザ
を用い、そして熱可塑性材料を熱硬化性材料上に
流動させてそれらの材料が相互に機械的に接合さ
れる様にレーザ・ビームを熱硬化性材料に隣接す
る局所的預域の熱可塑性材料に方向付けることに
より、短時間で熱硬化性材料に接合され得る。
熱可塑性材料は、熱可塑性材料を熱硬化性材料
上に流動させて両材料間の界面に機械的接合を形
成するために放射エネルギを熱可塑性材料に加え
ることによつて、熱硬化性材料に接合される。
本発明の方法の大きな特徴は、レーザを放射エ
ネルギ源として用いることにより、接合部が0.5
乃至5秒間で形成され得ることである。これは、
製造条件が高度な場合に重要である。更に、人間
の手またはマニピユレータによつて物理的にアク
セスし難い組立体内に配置されている部材間にも
接合部が形成され得る。これは、レーザ・ビーム
が熱可塑性材料に接触すればよく、何ら物理的接
触を要しないためである。この場合、レーザ・ビ
ームが両材料間の界面から離れた熱可塑性材料の
端部が始めにぶつからずには該界面に投射され得
ないときには、そのレーザ・ビームが直接方向付
けられる様に傾斜した表面を有する熱可塑性部材
を成型又は機械加工する必要があり得る。レー
ザ・ビームを遮蔽する様な端部は、レーザ・ビー
ムが界面に於て熱可塑性材料にぶつかり得る様
に、界面から傾斜され得る。
本発明の方法は、熱硬化性材料であるフエノー
ル材料を熱可塑性材料であるポリカーボネート材
料に接合する場合に特に有用である。場合によつ
て、相互に異なる特性を有するこれらの2つの材
料を接合する場合が生じ得る。フエノール材料は
磁気的及び電気的状況に望ましい或る種の特性を
有している。一方、ポリカーボネート材料は容易
に成型可能であり、成型後も安定である。
2つの材料が相互に接合される前に、それらが
組立体内部に配置されて相互に整合されていなけ
ればならない場合に、物理的にアクセス不可能な
場合が生じる。通常、その様な組立体では、それ
ら2つの材料を収容する筐体がそれらの2つの材
料に物理的に接触する必要がある方法を用いてそ
れらを接合することを困難にするような狭い開孔
しか持たない。本発明の方法は、レーザ・ビーム
をエネルギ源として用いているので、それらの材
料に物理的に接触する必要がないことは勿論であ
る。
次に、図面を参照して、本発明をその好実施例
について更に詳細に説明する。
第1図に於て、本発明の方法は、開孔31を有
する筐体30内に於て熱硬化性部材10が熱可塑
性部材20へ相互に整合された後にそれらを相互
に接合させるために用いられている。第2図に於
てより明確に示されている如く、制御されたレー
ザ・ビームが、熱硬化性部材10との界面近傍に
於て熱可塑性部材20の肩部21に衝突する様に
アクセス開孔31を経て方向付けられて、その衝
突領域に於ける熱可塑性部材20の温度がその流
動温度迄上昇され、それによつて上記2つの部材
間に形成されている間隙15中にそして熱硬化性
部材10の肩部11上に溶融した熱可塑性材料が
ぬれ特性によつて流動する。間隙15は、上記2
つの部材を更に機械的に固定する。
熱硬化性部材と熱可塑性部材との間の接合部
は、熱可塑性材料を熱硬化性材料上に流動させる
ことによつて形成される。レーザ40からのビー
ム41は、間隙15に最も近い端部の近傍に於て
肩部21に衝突するべきである。入射角が限定さ
れていることにより、ビーム41が間隙15から
離れた端部又は近傍に於て肩部21に衝突する様
な場合には、その端部は第4図に示されている如
く面取りされ得る。
次の2つの実施例に於ては、特定のプロセス・
パラメータとともに用いられたレーザの型が示さ
れており、それらのプロセス・パラメータは制造
条件に応じて変更され得る。
実施例 1 第1図の熱硬化性部材10は、熱硬化性材料で
あるフエノール材料から成る。部材10が接合さ
れるべき部材20は、30%の媒体で充填されたガ
ラスのポリカーボネート材料である。フエノール
材料は、その電気特性の故に、部材10に用いら
れた。30%の媒体で充填されたガラスのポリカー
ボネート材料は、その成型容易性及び成型後の安
定性の故に、部材20に選択された。部材10及
び20は、低パワーのYAGレーザによる1.06μ
mの放射を用いて略5秒間のビーム照射時間で3
つの異なる領域に於て相互に接合された。その結
果、略8Kgの引張り強さ(pull strength)を有
する接合部が3つの領域に於て上記2部材間に形
成された。上記レーザ・ビームは該ビームの中心
部が当る部分のポリカーボネート材料に幾分焦げ
を生じたが、均一な溶融体の領域を生ぜしめて、
接合部を形成した。レーザ・ビームの焦点をぼか
すことによつて、均一な溶融体の領域の幅を大き
くすることができる。これは又、ポリカーボネー
トの局部的な焦げを最小限にする。
ビームの入射角は、水平軸から僅かに略10゜で
あつた。45゜の如き、より大きな入射角が好まし
いが、第1図の場合の如く、両部材が筐体内にあ
る場合には、入射角が限定された。入射角を大き
くするために鏡を筐体30中に挿入することも可
能であるが、余り実際的ではない。
実施例 2 第3図に示されている実施例に於ては、フエノ
ール部材10は第2図の部材10と実質的に同一
の形状及び寸法を有した。しかしながら、この場
合のポリカーネネート部材20は、第2図の場合
の如く部材10の肩部11に対向する肩部21を
有さず、従つて第2図の場合の如き間隙15を有
していない。この実施例に於て用いられたレーザ
は、焦点距離0.1cm×1.0cmの円柱レンズを用いた
10.6μmの放射を有するCO2レーザであり、該レ
ンズは部材10と部材20との界面に沿つて接合
領域を拡げた。上記両部材は、40ワツトにより、
0.5,1.0及び2.0秒の露光時間で接合された。ビー
ムが3つの領域に方向付けられ、上記0.5,1.0及
び2.0秒の各露光時間に対応して、各々1.9,2.8及
び4.5Kgの平均引張り強さを有する、3つの接合
部が部材10と部材20との間の形成された。高
パワーのCO2レーザからの放射エネルギは、ポリ
カーボネート材料の温度を、その溶融体が再流動
する時間が充分にない程迅速に上昇せしめ得るこ
とが観察された。CO2レーザを用いることによ
り、処理時間は短縮され得るが、接合部の強さ
は、より長い時間でYAGレーザを用いた場合よ
りも小さい。
熱硬化性部材及び熱可塑性部材を接合させるた
めに種々の代替的方法が用いられ得る。それらの
部材が3ケ所で接合されるものとすると、3つの
別個の低パワー・レーザが、該レーザからのビー
ムが3つの領域に同時にぶつかる様に、配置され
得る。又は、単一の高パワー・レーザが、1つの
高エネルギ・ビームを3つの領域にぶつかる3つ
のビームに分割するためのビーム・スプリツタ及
び鏡とともに用いられ、或は単一の低パワー・レ
ーザが、ビームを3つの領域に連続的に移動させ
る回転鏡とともに用いられ得る。
以上の説明から、本発明の方法は、熱可塑性部
材を熱硬化性部材に5秒乃至それ以下で接合させ
得ることが理解されよう。両部材はそれらに物理
的に接触せずに接合され得る。場合によつて、両
部材はそれらの間に充填物を有する組立体である
場合があり、即ち部材20に対して荷重を有する
部材10が用いられる場合があるが、その様な場
合でも、部材10及び20に物理的に接触する装
置を用いずに接合部が形成されることに注目され
たい。又、両部材が筐体内に在つて該筐体に設け
た開孔を通じて物理的にアクセスすることができ
ない場合でも、該開孔を通じてレーザ・ビームを
照射することによつて、接合部が形成され得るこ
とが理解されよう。

第1図は開孔を有する筐体内に配置された、本
発明の方法により接合され得る熱硬化性部材及び
熱可塑性部材を示す概略図、第2図は熱硬化性部
材の肩部に対向して熱可塑性部材の相補的肩部が
間隔を置いて配置されている場合に於て本発明の
方法により形成された接合部を示す概略図、第3
図は熱硬化性部材の肩部に対向して熱可塑性部材
に相補的肩部が設けられていない場合に於て本発
明の方法により形成された接合部を示す概略図、
第4図は両部材の界面から傾斜している相補的肩

Claims (1)

  1. 【特許請求の範囲】 1 熱硬化性材料からなる第1の部材の底部に突
    起を設け、 上記突起が熱可塑性材料からなる第2の部材と
    接触するように上記第1の部材を該第2の部材の
    上に載置し、 上記第2の部材の上記突起に隣接する局所的領
    域にレーザ・ビームを照射して該領域の熱可塑性
    材料を溶融し、 ぬれ特性によつて上記溶融された熱可塑性材料
    が上記突起上に流動した後、レーザ・ビーム照射
    を停止して該熱可塑性材料を固まらせることを含
    む、 熱可塑性材料を熱硬化性材料に接合させるため
    の方法。
