Description

【発明の詳細な説明】 連続テープをドに置き接着するための装置は、入手可能
で使用もされている。しかしながら、このような装置は
、ボイドを含まない複合構造物(composite 
 5tructure)はもたらさない。従って、構造
がオートクレーブの中で固められるとともに硬化される
、熱硬化性の樹脂でつくられたテープを使用することが
、常習的に行なわれてきた。後者はコストがかかるし、
時間を消耗子る操作である。更に、これらの制限によっ
て、熱可塑性樹脂を用いてつくられたテープから得られ
るべき改善された特性が、末端のユーザーから奪われて
しまっていた。
本発明の方法に従うと、連続的な長さのテープを、作業
表面Cvork  5urface)に向かって、そし
てまた作業表面に対してある角度で進め、2つの長さの
ものの間の相対的な動きの間       8に、前進
する長さのものを固める力(cons。
1idating  force)でプレスすることに
よって、繊維強化熱可塑性テープから複合構造物が構築
される。高温の放射エネルギーのビームが、前進し、そ
の先駆をするテープの長さの間のニップ(n i p)
の所およびニップを横切った所に向けられ、ビームの中
心は構築しつつある構造物上とする。相対運動の速度お
よび放射エネルギーの温度は、固められつつあるテープ
の会合表面において、熱可塑性材料を加熱、溶融、結合
させるべく相互に連動させる。
本発明の別の具体例は、前進する長さの強化されたポリ
マーテープを、構築中の複合構造物に向かって、そして
またこれに対してある角度で導くための手段と、前進す
る長さのものを構造物上にプレスするためのロールとを
有する、テープ下置きヘッド(tape−1aying
  head)である。そのようなヘッドは、テープお
よび構造物の間のニップより進んで、ビームの中心を構
造物上として、テープおよび構造物に向けて放射ビーム
ヒーターを提供することによって改善されたものである

第1図および第2図においては、本発明のテープ下置き
ヘッドは、一般に数字1oによって示されており、ロー
ラー14.16を備えられたフレーム12を含むものと
して示されている。両方のローラーの表面はテフロン■
無粘着仕上げを有している。ローラー14の上の一方の
端部で、フレーム12は、ロボットの・アームに乗るた
めに適合された、板状部18を支持している。
フレーム12の部材は、また、一対のガイドブロック2
0.22およびピストン−シリンダー組み立て物24を
支えている。組み立て物24のeF+、ドは、その間に
ローラー14が回転可能に載置される脚部を有する、ヨ
ーク26に接続されている。ヨーク26は、また、ガイ
ドブロック20.22の中を摺動し得る、上向きに立っ
ているロッドを有している。
ヘッド10が動くにつれて、繊維強化熱可塑性テープ2
8が、マグネチ′ツククラッチ(magnetic

テープ28は、ガイドロール36の下、サイトレール3
8.39、放射予備ヒーター40上、落し44を現定す
る間隔のあけられたロッドの間のロール42の上方、お
よび進んでくるテープ28を一部構築された複合構造物
46の頂部ヘプレスするローラー14の下を進む。下に
置かれつつあるテープが構造物の最初゛である場合は、
このものはベッドもしくは他の作業表面の上に置かれた
、繊維布48に対してプレスされる。繊維布48は無粘
着仕上げを含浸されている。
一部構築された構造物46に対してヘッドlOが動くに
つれて、構造物の上面が放射予備ヒーター50に曝され
る。しかし、前進するテープ28を構造物4Gに対して
溶融させ結合させるための熱の主要な源は、放射ヒータ
ー52であ今 る。ヒーターは多岐管54を有している。
ヒーター52は、フレーム12に調整可能に接続された
腕金56からつるされ、エネルギーのビーA37(第2
図)がテープ28および構造物46に向けられ、ビーム
の中心がこの2つのものの間のニップより前に進んだ構
造物46の上となるように、位置ぎめされる。構築中の
構造物46への伝導による熱損失のため、前進するテー
プ28に対してよりも構造物の方により多くの放射エネ
ルギーを向けることによって、合わされていく表面を同
時に融点までもっていけることが見出された。
ロール42に隣接して、ロール42から適正に離されて
ロール58がある。ロール58は、サドル59のぶらさ
がった脚部もしくは接合部の間に載置される。サドル5
9は、フレーム12の部材中に回転可能に載置されてい
るシャフト60に固定されている。シャフト60はエア
シリンダー(air  cylinder)62に接続
されている。後で更に詳細に説明するように、ロール5
8がテープ28とかみ合うように動かされる時、このも
のはベルト65を通してエアモーター(airmoto
r)64によって駆動される。
モーター64は片持ちばりとしてサドル59に接続され
ている。第6図に示される如く、エアシリンダー62は
レール38の例外に配設される。
第1図、第2図および第5図を参照すると、落し44お
よびベッドナイフ(bedknife)66の間にギャ
ップがある。テープ28は、ベッドナイフ66および板
状部68の間、そしてL型の腕金によってエアシリンダ
ーに接続されたナイフ69の下を通る。
第3図および第4図に示される如く、ヒーター52は、
ヒーターを腕金56(第1図)に接続するのに使用され
る耳状部74および多岐管54を載せる耳状部76とを
備えた、末端部材(endpieces)72を有する
。末端部材72の間には、管状石英ランプ80からのエ
ネルギーを高配向性の平行な赤外(IR)線の狭いビー
ムもしくは細片形57に集光する、男物面状の反射板7
8がある。複式のスロット調整の特徴(第1図)により
、ランプ80の上に中心をもつ軸のまわりに、ヒーター
52をピボット動作させることができる。
本装置の運転可能な具体例においては、ヒーター52は
水冷式の平行線赤外ストリップヒーター(Strip 
 Heater)、 モデルNo 、5305−5A、
リサーチ・インク(Research  Inc、)、
  ミネアポリス、MNとする。石英ランプ80はリサ
ーチ・インクの1200T3/CL型のものとし、6イ
ンチの点灯長さを有し、定格電圧で約4000’Fの温

ヒーター52を通電してローラー14を予熱する。
ヘッド10は1手動または板状部18に接続されたマニ
ピュレーターによって、配設位置へ移動し得る。もしロ
ボットを使用する場合は、本明細書に開示されるその動
きおよび種々のアクチュエーターは、プログラム制御装
置によって管理される。
ヘッド10が配設位置にある時は、連続の長さのテープ
をプレスし固化させるために望まれる水準の力は、組み
立て物24によってかけられる。
これは、マニピュレーターおよび/またはヘッド10の
重さに対して反作用力を提供する水準に、組み立て物2
4に対して空気圧を設定することによって行なわれる。
テープ28がローラー14に到達するや否や、ロール5
8はエアシリンダー62によって引き戻される。張力は
マグネチック       7クラツチ34によって前
進するテープにかけられる。適正な長さが下に置かれた
後、ロール58は、ロール42とかみ合うように動かさ
れ、ナイフ69を活動させてテープ28を切断する。
ヘッド10は下置き操作が完了するまで動作し続け、次
に出発点まで戻されるが、そこでモーター64を再び活
動させてテープ28をロール14および構造物46の間
のニップまで動かす。構造物46が望みの厚さまで構築
されてしまうまで、同じ手順をくり返す。
ヘッドlOは、その前進速度に依って、予備ヒーター4
0.50のエネルギーを利用したり利用しなかったりし
て、使用することができる。前進するテープ28のポリ
マー性のマトリックスおよびローラー14によって同化
を達成するのに十分な深さまでの構造物46の上面を溶
融させるための主要な熱源は、赤外ヒーター52によっ
て供用される。熱可塑体に対しては、テープおよび構造
物は、テープの厚さの5〜20%の深さまで通して、融
点まで加熱しなければならないことが見出された。これ
以北の深さまでの溶融は、構造物のゆがみ並びにマトリ
ックスの消失および分解をひき起す。上述の如く、ヒー
ターからの赤外線の細片形もしくはビームの中心は、テ
ープ28および構造物46の間のニップより前に進んだ
、構築中の構造物の所に向けられる。約20%の光線が
テープ28の下側の表面に向けられ、約80%は構造物
46の上側の表面に向けられる。ローラー14によって
圧力をかけると、会合する表面が融合されて、ボイドを
含まない固化された構造物が構築される。そのような構
造物では、テープはその実体を失い、即ち明確な薄層は
裸眼には見えない。
ボイドな含まない固化構造物を構築するための鍵は、会
合する表面を同時に融点までもっていくことである。両
方の表面は等しく溶融されねばならず、そうでないと構
造物が屈曲したり、さもなければゆがんだりする。試験
では、前進するテープ28および構築中の構造物46の
間の温度の差は、赤外ビームの中心が0.3インチもニ
ップよリLであれば、より多くのエネルギーがテープ2
8に向けられて、大きいことが見出された。
ビームの中心をニップに向けても、温度の差はほんの僅
かにしか少なくならない。より多くの赤外エネルギーを
構築中の構造物に向けることによってのみ、熱可塑性材
料を同時に融点までもって行くことができる。上述の如
く、このことは、伝熱を介する構造物46への比較的大
きい熱損失に帰せられた。
熱可塑体の性質が、テープの表面の融点までの加熱が酸
化および分解をひき起すようなものである場合は、加熱
された窒素の如き不活性ガスが多岐管54に供給され、
テープ28および構造物46の加熱された表面に溢れ出
る。
本発明の方法に従うと、連続的な長さの繊維強化熱可塑
性テープを、作業表面に向かって、そしてまた作業表面
に対してある角度で進め、2つの長さのものの間の相対
的な動きの間に、前進する長さのものを先行する長さの
ものの表面に対してプレスし、そして高温の放射エネル
ギーのビー今を、テープおよび構造物の所およびこれを
横切った所に向け、ビームの中心を構造物上でこれらの
ものの間のニップより先に進んだ所とすることによって
、固化された複合構造物が構築される。相対運動の速度
および放射エネルギーの温度は、熱可塑性マトリックス
を会合表面に加熱、溶融そして結合させるのと相関して
いる。
構造物のしわは、テープを張力のもとに前進させること
によって回避される。
作業表面に対するテープの最初の長さのものの動きは、
無粘着性の仕上げを含浸された繊維布上にこのものを置
くことによって、避けることができる。
一ヒ述の如く、会合する表面は、テープの厚さの5〜2
0%の深さにわたって、熱可塑性マトリックスの融点ま
で加熱されなければならないことが見出された。このこ
とは、赤外ヒーターからの約20%のエネルギーを前進
するテープの下側の表面に向け、約80%を構築中の構
造物の上側の表面に向けることによって達せられる。加
熱されたテープに圧力をかけて、会合する表面が融合さ
れ、ボイドを含まない固化された構造物が構築される。
ボイドを含まないパネルが、本発明の方法に従って、連
続グラファイトフィラメントで強化されたテープから構
築された。テープの中では、フィラメントは紙状の連続
マトリックス中に一様に分布される。マトリックスにつ
いては、種々の熱可塑性ポリマーが使用され、例えばポ
リプロピレン、ポリフェニレンスルフィド、無定形ポリ
イミド、ポリエーテルケトン−ケトンおよびビス(p−
アミノシクロヘキシル)メタンとドデカンジオン酸から
のポリアミドが使用された。典型的なパネルは、約0.
00フインチの厚さおよび4インチの幅を有する長さ1
5のテープから、約0.105インチの厚さに構築され
た。テープを強化するにはアラミドフィラメントもまた
使用することができた。
複合構造物における熱IFT塑性ポリマーの幾つかの有
用で有利な特性は、これらのものの高いガラス転移点、
高い衝撃抵抗および高い圧縮抵抗である。

Claims (1)

  1. 【特許請求の範囲】 1、繊維強化熱可塑性テープから複合構造物を構築し固
    化させる方法にして、該方法が、 連続的な長さのテープを、作業表面に向かって、そして
    また作業表面に対してある角度で進め、2つの長さのも
    のの間の相対的な動きの間に、前進する長さのものを、
    固める力で、先行する長さのものの上へプレスし、そし
    て 高温の放射エネルギーのビームを、前進し、そして先行
    する長さのテープの間のニップの所およびこれを横切っ
    た所に向け、ビームの中心を構造物上とし 相対運動の速度および放射エネルギーの温度は、固化さ
    れつつあるテープの会合表面にある熱可塑性マトリック
    スを加熱、溶融そして結合させるのと相関させること からなる段階で構成されることからなる方法。 2、マトリックスが、各テープの厚さの5〜20%まで
    通して融点まで加熱されることからなる、特許請求の範
    囲第1項記載の方法。 3、非粘着仕上げで含浸された繊維布を、それに対して
    前へ進められたテープの最初の長さのものの下の作業表
    面の上へ配設するという、予備的段階を含む、特許請求
    の範囲第2項記載の方法。 4、放射エネルギーの約20%を前進するテープに向け
    、そして残りの放射エネルギーを構築中の構造物に向け
    ることからなる、特許請求の範囲第2項記載の方法。 5、各々の続いてくる長さのものが張力のもとで前進さ
    れることからなる、特許請求の範囲第4項記載の方法。 6、連続的な長さの繊維強化ポリマーテープを施用し固
    化して複合構造物とするための装置にして、該装置が、
    それに沿ってテープが作業表面に向かって、そして作業
    表面とある鋭角で前進する落し、落しの末端部にあるプ
    レスロール、およびビームの中央がニップより前に進ん
    だ構造物上にある、連続的な長さのテープの間のニップ
    の所およびニップを横切った所に向けられた、放射ビー
    ムヒーターから構成されることからなる装置。 7、前進する長さの強化テープを、構築中の複合構造物
    に向かって、そしてこれに対してある角度で導くための
    手段、および前進する長さのものを構造物の上へプレス
    するためのロールを有する、テープ下置きヘッドにおい
    て、テープおよび構造物に向けられた放射ビームヒータ
    ーを、ビームの中心を構造物上として、テープおよび構
    造物の間のニップより先に進んだ所に提供することから
    なる改善。 8、該誘導手段の近くに配設されたナイフ、およびテー
    プの進行の経路全域にナイフを動かしてそれによってこ
    のものを望みの長さに切断するためのアクチュエーター
    を更に含む、特許請求の範囲第7項記載のテープ下置き
    ヘッド。
