Description

【発明の詳細な説明】 産業上の利用分野 本発明は、繊維強化可塑性テープから複合構造
物を構築する方法、装置及びヘツドに関する。
従来技術及びその課題 連続テープを下に置き接着するための装置は、
入手可能ですでに使用もされている。しかしなが
ら、このような装置は、空〓を含まない複合構造
物(composite structure)を構築することが困
難である。
従つて、オートクレーブの中で固められ硬化さ
れる、熱硬化性の樹脂でつくられたテープを使用
することが、従来に行なわれてきた。しかしこの
方法は、コストがかかるし、長時間要する作業を
含む。更に、これらの制限によつて、熱可塑性樹
脂テープから得られる利点を十分得ることができ
ない。
課題を解決するための手段 本発明に従うと、連続的に延びているテープ
を、作業表面(work surface)に向かつて、そ
して作業表面に対して所定の角度で前進せしめ、
前進せしめられる部分と先行部分との間の相対的
な移動の間に、前進せしめられる部分を合体せし
める力(consolidating force)で押圧すること
によつて、繊維強化熱可塑性テープから複合構造
物が構築される。高温の放射エネルギーのビーム
が、前進せしめられる部分と先行部分との間のニ
ツプ領域に向けられ、ビームの中心は構築しつつ
ある構造物上に位置せしめる。相対的な移動及び
放射エネルギーの温度、結合が、合体されつつあ
るテープの会合表面において熱可塑性マトリツク
スを加熱、溶融させることと相関せしめられる。
本発明は、更に前進せしめられる強化されたポ
リマーテープを、構築中の複合構造物に向かつ
て、この構造物に対して所定の角度で導くための
手段と、前進せしめられる部分を構造物上に押圧
せしめるローラーと具備するテープ下置きヘツド
(tape−laying head)に関する。このヘツドは、
ビームの中心を、テープ及び構造物の間のニツプ
より前方の構造物上に位置せしめられた、テープ
及び構造物に向けられた方射ビームヒーターを備
えている。
実施例 第1図及び第2図においては、本発明のテープ
下置きヘツドは、全体を参照番号10によつて示
されており、ローラー14,16を備えられたフ
レーム12を含む。両方のローラーの表面はテフ
ロン(商標)無粘着処理されている。ローラー1
4の上の一方の端部で、フレーム12は、ロボツ
トのアームに乗るようになつている板状部18を
支持している。
フレーム12は、また、一対のガイドロツク2
0,22及びピストン−シリンダー組み立て物2
4を支持している。組み立て物24のロツドは、
その間にローラー14が回転可能に載置される脚
部を有するヨーク26に接続されている。ヨーク
26は、また、ガイドブロツク20,22の中を
摺動し得る上向きに立つているロツドを有してい
る。
ヘツド10が動くにつれて、繊維強化熱可塑性
テープ28が、マグネチツククラツチ
(magnetic clutch)34によつてかけられる戻
し張力(back tension)の望みのレベルで、ロ
ール30から引つ張られる。第2図は模式図にお
いて、戻し張力をかけるための仕掛けは、滑車の
ストラツプブレーキ上の重量34′として示され
ている。テープ28は、ガイドロール36の下、
サイドレール38,39、放射予備ヒーター40
上、シユート44を形成する間隔のあけられたロ
ツドの間のロール42の上方、及び進んでくるテ
ープ28を一部構築された複合構造物46の頂部
へ押圧するローラー14の下を進む。下に置かれ
つつあるテープが構造物の最初である場合は、作
業表面の上に配置された繊維布48に押圧され
る。繊維布48は無粘着処理されている。
一部構築された構造物46に対してヘツド10
が動くにつれて、構造物の上面が放射予備ヒータ
ー50に曝される。しかし、前進するテープ28
を構造物46に対して溶融させ結合させるための
熱の主要な源は、方射ヒーター52である。この
ヒーターは多岐管54を有している。
ヒーター52は、フレーム12に調整可能に接
続されたブラケツト56からつるされ、エネルギ
ービーム57(第2図)がテープ28及び構造物
46に向けられ、ビームの中心がニツプより前方
の構造物46上に位置するように位置決めされ
る。構築中の構造物46への伝導による熱損失の
ため、前進するテープ28に対してよりも構造物
の方により多くの放射エネルギーを向けることに
よつて、合わされていく表面を同時に融点までも
つていけることが見出された。
ロール42に隣接して、ロール42から適正に
離されてロール58がある。ロール58は、サド
ル59のぶらさがつた脚部もしくは接合部の間に
載置される。サドル59は、フレーム12の一部
材に回転可能に載置されているシヤフト60に固
定されている。シヤフト60はエアシリンダー
(air sylinder)62に接続されている。後で更
に詳細に説明するように、ロール58は、テープ
28とかみ合うように動かされる時、ベルト65
を通してエアモーター(airmotor)64によつ
て駆動される。モーター64は片持ちばりとして
サドル59に接続されている。第6図に示される
如く、エアシリンダー62はレール38の側外に
配設される。
第1図、第2図及び第5図を参照すると、シユ
ート44及びベツドナイフ(bedknife)66の間
にギヤツプがある。テープ28は、ベツドナイフ
66及び板状部68の間、そしてL型のブラケツ
トによつてエアシリンダーに接続されたナイフ6
9の下を通る。
第3図及び第4図に示される如く、ヒーター5
2は、ヒーターをブラケツト56(第1図)に接
続するのに使用される耳状部74及び多岐管54
を載せる耳状部76とを備えた、末端部材
(endpieces)72を有する。末端部材72の間に
は、管状石英ランプ80からのエネルギーを高配
向性の平行な赤外(IR)線の狭いビームもしく
は細片形57に集光する、放物面状の反射板78
がある。複式のスロツト調整の特徴(第1図)に
より、ランプ80の上に中心をもつ軸のまわり
に、ヒーター52をピボツト動作させることがで
きる。
本装置の運転可能な具体例においては、ヒータ
ー52は水冷式の平行赤外線ストリツプヒーター
(Strip Heater)、モデルNo.5305−5A、リサー
チ・インク(Research Inc.)、ミネアポリス、
MNとする。石英ランプ80はリサーチ・インク
の1200T3/CL型のものとし、約15.2cm(6イン
チ)の点灯長さを有し、定格電圧で約4000〓の温
度で作動する。マグネチツククラツチ34はモデ
ルNo.HB−210、マグトロール・インク(Magtrol
Inc.)、バツフアロー、NYとする。
点灯前に、ロール30を心棒32の上にのせ、
テープ28の末端をロール36のまわりに、そし
てロール42の上へ引つ張る。エアシリンダー6
2を発動させてロール58を動かし、ロール42
上でテープとかみ合わせる。ヒーター52を通電
してローラー14を予熱する。
ヘツド10は、手動または板状部18に接続さ
れたマニピユレーターによつて、配設位置へ移動
し得る。もしロボツトを使用する場合は、本明細
書に開示されるその動き及び種々のアクチユエー
ターは、プログラム制御装置によつて管理され
る。
ヘツド10が配設位置にある時は、連続に延び
ているテープを押圧し合体させるために望まれる
レベルの力は、組み立て物24によつてかけられ
る。これは、マニピユレーター及び/またはヘツ
ド10の重さに対して反作用力を提供するレベル
に、組み立て物24に対して空気圧を設定するこ
とによつて行われる。テープ28がローラー14
に到達するや否や、ロール58はエアシリンダー
62によつて引き戻される。張力はマグネチツク
クラツチ34によつて前進するテープにかけられ
る。適正な部分が下に置かれた後、ロール58
は、ロール42とかみ合うように動かされ、ナイ
フ69を作動させてテープ28を切断する。ヘツ
ド10は下置き操作が完了するまで動作し続け、
次に出発点まで戻されるが、そこでモーター64
を再び活動させてテープ28をローラー14及び
構造物46の間のニツプまで動かす。構造物46
が望みの厚さまで構築されるまで、同じ手順をく
り返す。
ヘツド10は、その前進速度に依つて、予備ヒ
ーター40,50のエネルギーを利用したり利用
しなかつたりして、使用することができる。前進
するテープ28のポリマー性のマトツクス及びロ
ーラー14によつて合体を達成するのに十分な深
さまでの構造物46の上面を溶融させるための主
要な熱源は、赤外線のヒーター52によつて提供
される。熱可塑体に対しては、テープ及び構造物
は、テープの厚さの5〜20%の深さまで通して、
融点まで加熱しなければならないことが見出され
た。これ以上の深さまでの溶融は、構造物のゆが
み並びににマトリツクスの消失及び分解をひき起
す。上述の如く、ヒーターからの赤外線ビームの
中心は、テープ28及び構造物46の間のニツプ
より前に進んだ、構築中の構造物の所に向けられ
る。約20%の光源がテープ28の下側の表面に向
けられ、約80%は構造物46の上側の表面に向け
られる。ローラー14によつて圧力をかけると、
会合する表面が融合されて、空〓を含まない合体
された構造物が構築される。そのような構造物で
は、テープはその実体を失い、即ち明確な薄層は
肉眼では見えない。
空〓を含まない合体構造物を構築するための鍵
は、会合する表面を同時に融点までもつていくこ
とである。両方の表面は等しく溶融されねばなら
ず、そうでないと構造物が屈曲したり、ゆがんだ
りする。試験では、前進するテープ28及び構築
中の構造物46の間の温度の差は、赤外線ビーム
の中心が約7.6mm(0.3インチ)もニツプより前方
に位置すれば、より多くのエネルギーがテープ2
8に向けられて、大きいことが見出された。ビー
ムの中心をニツプに向けても、温度の差はほんの
僅かにしか少なくならない。より多くの赤外線エ
ネルギーを構築中の構造物に向けることによつて
のみ、熱可塑性材料を同時に融点までもつて行く
ことができる。上述の如く、このことは、伝熱を
介する構造物46への比較的大きい熱損失に帰せ
られた。
熱可塑体の性質が、テープの表面の融点までの
加熱が酸化及び分解を引き起すようなものである
場合は、加熱された窒素の如き不活性ガスが多岐
管54に供給され、テープ28及び構造物46の
加熱された表面に溢れ出る。
本発明の方法に従うと、連続的に延びている繊
維強化熱可塑性テープを、作業表面に向かつて、
作業表面に対して所定の角度で前進せしめ、前進
せしめられる部分と先行部分との間の相対的な動
きの間に、前進せしめられる部分を先行部分の表
面に対して押圧し、そして高温の放射エネルギー
のビームを、テープ及び構造物に向け、ビームの
中心を構造物上にニツプより前方の所とすること
によつて、合体された複合構造物が構築される。
相対的な移動及び放射エネルギーの温度が、熱可
塑性マトリツクスを会合表面に加熱、溶融そして
結合させることと相関せしめられる。
構造物のしわは、テープを張力のもとに前進さ
せることによつて回避される。
作業表面に対する最初のテープの移動は、無粘
着処理された繊維布上に、最初のテープを置くこ
とによつて、避けることができる。
上述の如く、会合する表面は、テープの厚さの
5〜20%の深さにわたつて、熱可塑性マトリツク
スの融点まで加熱されなければならないことが見
出された。このことは、赤外線ヒーターからの約
20%のエネルギーを前進するテープの下側の表面
に向け、約80%を構築中の構造物の上側の表面に
向けることよつて達せられる。加熱されたテープ
に圧力をかけて、会合する表面が融合され、空〓
を含まない合体された構造物が構築される。
空〓を含まないパネルが、本発明の方法に従つ
て、連続グラフアイトフイラメントで強化された
テープから構築された。テープの中では、フイラ
メントは紙状の連続マトリツクス中に一様に分布
される。マトリツクスについては、種々の熱可塑
性ポリマーが使用され、例えばポリプロピレン、
ポリフエニレンスルフイド、無定形ポリイミド、
ポリエーテルケトン−ケトン及びビス(p−アミ
ノシクロヘキシル)メタンとドデカンジオン酸か
らのポリアミドが使用された。典型的なパネル
は、約0.18mm(約0.007インチ)の厚さ及び約7.6
mm(3インチ)の幅を有する長さ15のテープか
ら、約2.7mm(約0.105インチ)の厚さに構築され
た。テープを強化するにはアラミドフイラメント
もまた使用することができた。
複合構造物における熱可塑性ポリマーの幾つか
の有用で有利な特性は、これらのものの高いガラ
ス転移点、高い衝撃抵抗及び高い圧縮抵抗であ
る。

Claims (1)

  1. 【特許請求の範囲】 1 繊維強化熱可塑性テープから複合構造物を構
    築し合体させる方法において、 連続的に延びているテープを、作業表面と所定
    の角度を形成するように、作業表面の方に前進せ
    しめること、 先行部分と前進せしめられる部分とを相対的に
    移動せしめる間に、前進せしめられる部分を、合
    体せしめる力で、先行部分上に押圧せしめるこ
    と、 高温の放射エネルギーのビームを、前進せしめ
    られる部分と先行部分との間のニツプ領域に向
    け、このビームの中心を構造物上に位置せしめる
    こと、及び 上記相対的な移動及び上記放射エネルギーの温
    度を、合体されつつあるテープの会合表面にある
    熱可塑性マトリツクスを加熱し、溶融し、結合さ
    せることに相関せしめること を含むことを特徴とする法。 2 マトリツクスが、各テープの厚さの5〜20%
    まで融点まで加熱せしめられる特許請求の範囲第
    1項記載の方法。 3 非粘着処理された繊維布が、テープの最初の
    部分の下の作業表面の上へ配設せしめられる特許
    請求の範囲第2項記載の方法。 4 放射エネルギーの約20%が前進せしめられる
    部分に向けられ、残りの放射エネルギーが構築中
    の構造物に向けられる特許請求の範囲第2項記載
    の方法。 5 連続的に延びている部分が、張力を受けた状
    態で前進せしめられる特許請求の範囲第4項記載
    の方法。 6 連続的に延びている繊維強化ポリマーテープ
    を付着し合体せしめて複合構造物とするための装
    置において、 作業表面と鋭角をなすように上記テープを前進
    せしめるシユートと、該シユートの末端部に設け
    られたプレスローラーと、ビームの中央が、テー
    プ及び構造物の間のニツプ領域の前方の構造物上
    に位置するように、ビームを上記ニツプ領域に向
    ける放射ビームヒーターとを具備することを特徴
    とする装置。 7 前進せしめられる強化テープを、構築中の複
    合構造物に向かつて、この構造物に対して所定の
    角度で導くための手段と、前進せしめられた強化
    テープを構造物の上へ押圧せしめるローラーとを
    具備するテープ下置きヘツドにおいて、 ビームの中心がテープ及び構造物の間のニップ
    領域より前方の構造物上に位置するように、テー
    プ及び構造物に向けられた方射ビームヒーターを
    具備することを特徴とするヘツド。 8 該導くための手段の近くに配設されたナイフ
    と、テープの進行の経路全域にナイフを動かして
    テープを切断せしめるためのアクチユエーターと
    を含む特許請求の範囲第7項記載のヘツド。
