Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve the efficiency of coupling with optical fibers by branching light incident from an input terminal through the 1st fiber layer and also making it propagate as a plane wave, and by focusing it on an output end surface through the 2nd fiber layer. CONSTITUTION:An optical fiber rod F consists of fibers 1 and 2 which have different refractivity distribution shapes. The fiber 1 has refractivity distribution as a concentric parabola T. The fiber 2, on the other hand, has stepwise refractivity distribution. The said fiber 1 provides lens operation to focus transmitted light. At this time, the distance D between the focal points of the end surface of the fiber rod F at the output end side OUT is as shown by equationI, where the length of the fiber 1 is denoted as Z. For this purpose, the photodetection- side optical fiber is placed at the focal to perform optical coupling efficiently. Thus, the coupling efficiency of the optical fibers is improved.
