Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a high hardness sintered body contg. >80vol% high pressure phase type boron nitride by using a binder contg. the carbide, nitride or carbonitride of a IVa group transition metal in the periodic table and an Al-contg. compound as principal components as well as Cu and an Fe group metallic element and manufacturing a sintered body under suitable conditions.
CONSTITUTION: High pressure phase type boron nitride powder of ≤10μ average grain size is mixed with a binder consisting of powder of the carbide, nitride or carbonitride of IVa group Ti, Zr or Hf in the periodic table and an Al compound contg. ≤5% Al, and this mixture is die pressed and sintered at ≥900°C under ≥20kb pressure. At the same time, a Cu and an Fe group metal, its alloy or its compound are allowed to penetrate into the sintered body from the outside. When the carbide, nitride and carbonitride of Ti, Zr or Hf are represented by MCx, MNx and M(C,N)x, respectively, (x) is ≤0.95. Thus, a high hardness sintered body for a tool is obtd. The high pressure phase type boron nitride content of the body ranges from over 80vol% to 95vol%.
