Abstract

PURPOSE: A raw material only composed of calcic substance is melted at high temperatures to form a melted lime, which is treated with carbon dioxide under heating to produce melted lime with high hydration resistance, thus showing no reduction in refractory and noncorrodible properies.
CONSTITUTION: One raw material only composed of calcic substance or 2 or more kinds of raw materials is melted by heating up over about 2,500°C. The heat melting is conducted by generating arcs between graphite electrodes and between the graphite electrode and the charged raw material. The molten material is cooled and crushed into lumps of fist or small sizes and the lumps are heat treated in a gas atmosphere containing carbon dioxide at a temperature lower than 850°C. The carbonation treatment forms dense and hydration-resistant films of calcium carbonate on the surface of the melted lime to give the melted lime with high hydration- resistance without addition of another oxide. The raw material is e.g., lime, limestone, calcium carbonate, chalk or calcium hydroxide.
