Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:The titled compound of formula I (R1 is lower alkyl; R2 is H or halogen; R3 is halogen, lower alkyl having OH as substituent group, lower alkanoyl having halogen as substituent group, etc.) and its salt.
EXAMPLE: 8-( 4-Trifluoroacetyl-1-piperazinyl )-9-chloro-5-methyl-6, 7-dihydro-1- oxo-1H,5H-benzo[ij]quinolidine-2-carboxylic acid.
USE: An antibacterial agent effective to both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria at low concentration.
PROCESS: The compound of formula I is prepared by reacting a benzo[ij]quinolidine-2-carboxylic acid derivative of formula II (R4 is halogen, lower alkanesulfonyloxy, etc.) with piperazine or its derivative of formula III.
