NEW MATERIAL:An α-amino acid derivative expressed by formula I (R1 is H, alkyl, alkylideneamino, aralkylideneamino or heterocyclic alkylideneamino; R2 is lower alkyl; n is 0, 1 or 2; R3 is H, carboxyl-protecting group or salt-forming cation; R4 is H or hydroxy-protecting group).
EXAMPLE: D-α-( 4-Ethyl-2,3-dioxo-1-piperazinecarboxamido )-β-(S)-hydroxybutyric acid.
USE: An intermediate for an antimicrobial agent (a synthetic cephalosporin compound) having a very wide antimicrobial spectrum and improved antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and safety for β-lactamase.
PROCESS: A compound of formula II is reacted with a reactive derivative at the carboxyl group of a compound pressed by formula III to give the compound of formula I.
