Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:An azetidione derivative of formula I (R1 is alkyl or aralkyl which may mave OH, alkoxy, etc. as substituent groups at the α-position; R2 is alkyl, aralkyl, etc.; R3 is H or carboxyl-protecting group), and its pharmacologically acceptable salt.
EXAMPLE: 2-Methoxy-6-(1-hydroxyethyl)penem-3-carboxylic acid.
USE: Antibacterial agent and its synthetic intermediate. Effective to Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Administrable by oral or parenteral administration.
PROCESS: Reaction of a compound of formula II (R7 is alkyl or alkoxy which may have OH, etc. as substituent groups at the α-position; R8 is carboxyl-protecting group) with a compound of formula IV (R9 is H, alkyl, etc.) affords a compound of formula III, which is subjected, if necessary, to the removal of the protecting groups, the conversion of the substituent groups, etc., to obtain the compound of formula I and its salt.
