NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I [R1 is alkyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, or cycloalkadienyl group, etc.; R2 is H, protective group, or cation; X is O or S; Z is formula II or III (Y is H, halogen, OH, or cyano group)], its salt, or ester.
EXAMPLE: 7-[ D-α-Uracil-1-carbonyl-amino )phenylacetamido ]-3-methyl-3-cephem- 4-carboxylic acid.
USE: Antibacterials effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
PROCESS: A penicillin of formula IV or its derivative is reacted with a uracil of formula V or its reactive derivative, e.g. uracil-1-carboxylic acid, in the presence or absence of a base in an inert solvent, e.g. methanol, at -50W80°C to give the compound of formula I, its salt, or ester.
