Abstract

PURPOSE:To effectively remove the fine nonmetallic inclusions particles in molten steel without increasing the size of the tundish by providing the porous weir composed of refractory pieces of a fixed or nonfixed shape through which molten metal is flowable in the horizontal direction at the boundary of the receiving and tapping steel bath regions of the tundish. CONSTITUTION:Refractory pieces of a fixed shape, for example, the shape comprising cutting a cylinder, tetrapod shape, etc. or nonfixed shape are bonded to each other to provide the porous weir 5 of the skeleton communicating both baths, at the boundary of the receiving and tapping steel bath regions 3, 4 of the tundish. The weir is made to satisfy formula, with the width of the weir 5 being lcm, the mean height in the perpendicular direction of the channels in the weir being dcm and the velocity of flow of the molten steel in the horizontal direction being Vscm/ sec. As a result of this, the turbulence of the molten steel injected into the region 3 from the ladle nozzle 6 is absorbed by the thin layers of the surface on the region 3 side of the weir and the molten steel flows evenly and gently in the horizontal direction through the remaining greater portions of the weir over te entire part of the weir. During this time, the nonmetallic inclusions which are 50mu or more in diameter and are harmful for practical use float and are adsorbed on the refractory pieces, whereby they are removed.
