Abstract
PURPOSE:To effectively remove the fine nonmetallic inclusion particles in molten metal without increasing the size of tundish or doing others by providing the weir plates for shutting off of molten steel turbulence at the boundary of the receiving and tapping steel bath region of the tundish and the shelves for forming floating separating zones in the lower stream region in proximity thereto. CONSTITUTION:Weirs 5 are disposed at the intermediate of the receiving and tapping bath regions 3, 4 of the tundish. The weirs 5 consist of three or more layers of refractory-made flat plate holed weirs 51-53 having multiple through-holes and the through-holes of the respective layers are provided in mutually serrated positions. One or more stages of refractory-made shelves 10 which satisfy formula are provided approximately parallel to the tundish bottom, in proximity to the weirs 5 in the region 4. Here, d: the spacing between the shelves, l: the length in the flow direction of the shelves, VS: the velocity of flow of the molten steel in the horizontal direction. As a result of this, the turbulence of the molten steel injected into the region 3 from the ladle nozzle 6 becomes even approximate laminar flow by passig through the holed weirs 51-53. Then, the harmful inclusion particles of radii about 2.5mu or more float mostly and are attracted on the bottom surface of the shelves 10, whereby they are separated away.
