Abstract

1391845 Continuous casting KLOCKNERWERKE AG 14 April 1972 [22 April 1971 31 July 1971] 17382/72 Heading B3F [Also in Division F4] Al-killed steel is poured 1 through a duct 2 into a tundish 4 of trough form, for generally horizontal flow with turbulence but with a part of the flow in an upwardly inclined direction so that the steel 5 contacts the underside of a slag layer 6, e.g. so that alumina inclusions (particularly in Al-killed steel) agglomerated by the turbulence, collect in the slag. The duct 2, which may be in several parts and may have a closed bottom before securement to the bottom of the tundish 4 has at least one lateral aperture 3 or 3<SP>1</SP> and there is tortuous flow around at least two staggered baffles 7 at each side before upward direction by an oblique-faced baffle 7 which is spaced from both the tundish sides. In another embodiment the apertures 3, 3<SP>1</SP> are upwardly inclined and there are no baffles. There may be one aperture 3 and one outlet spout 9 or 10 to a mould or there may be two of either of these forms of spout if two moulds are supplied. The spout 10 directs flow in horizontal directions before it falls into a mould. The tundish 4 may be of V-form in plan with the apertures 3, 3<SP>1</SP> of the duct 2 aligned with the limbs of the tundish.
