Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title substance useful as an intermediate for the synthesis of amino acids in high yield, by reacting an α-olefin with a polyhalogeno-acetic acid in the presence of a ruthenium or rhodium complex having a trivalent organophosphorus compound as a ligand.
CONSTITUTION: An α-olefin of formula I: (R is H or alkyl group) is reacted with a polyhalogeno-acetic acid of formula II: (X is H or halogen; Y is halogen) in the presence of 0.05W10 mol % based on the raw material mixture of a ruthenium or a rhodium complex having a trialent organophosphorus compound of formul a IV or V as a catalyst at a reflux temperature under normal pressrne for 1W7 hr to give an α-halogen substituted-γ-butyrolactone of formula III. Dichlorotris (triphenyl phosphine)-ruthenium, etc. may be cited as the catalyst.
EFFECT: The objective compound can be obtained in one step under mild conditions without substantial formation of by-products.
