Abstract

PURPOSE: To efficiently and economically clarify sewage in a single treatment tank by turning the upper potion of the tank packed with solid particles into an aerobic zone through the stirring action of an oxygen-bearing gas, tuning the lower portion into an anaerobic zone, and treating the sewage in the zones.
CONSTITUTION: The upper portion of a treatment tank 1 is packed with 30-80% by apparent volume of solid particles 5 coated with aerobic biological film; the lower portion is packed with 80-30% of particles 6 coated with anaerobic biological film. Sewage is driven by a pump 7 into the bottom of the tank 1, and into the anaerobic zone A. Nitrogen in the form of nitrous acid and nitric acid in the recirculation water from a separation tank 4 is denitrated by the action of denitrating bacterium on the particles 5 using organic matter as a carbon source. As the sewage flows up into the aerobic zone B, it is circulated in an inner cylinder 2 by the gas lift action of an oxygen-bearing gas fed from a pipe 9. The BOC-oxidizing bacterium on the particles 5 removes BOD, and the nitrifying bacterium conducts oxidation to nitrogen in the form of nitrous acid and nitric acid.
