Abstract

PURPOSE: To efficiently surface treat Al or its alloy with no environmental pollution problem by electro-polishing the Al or its alloy in a bath obtd. by adding a water sol. high molecular cpd. and a surfactant to an aq. soln. of sulfuric acid, followed by formation of an oxide film at a different current density.
CONSTITUTION: Current is supplied to Al or its alloy as an electrode at an electrode current density of 2W100 A/dm2 for 30 secW5 min in a bath soln. of 50W100, pref. 60W80°C consisting of 25W40 parts of water, 20W50 parts of sulfuric acid, 20W50 parts of a water sol. high molecular cpd. with an average MW of 200W400, e.g. polyethylene glycol, and 0.1W5 parts of a surfactant, pref. a mixt. of a cationic surfactant and an anionic or nonionic surfactant to electro-polish the Al or its alloy. Next current is supplied in the same bath of 30W80°C at an electrode current density of 0.3W20, pref. 1.5W6 A/dm2 and an electrolytic voltage of 4W20 V for 5W30 min to form an oxide film. The current may be DC, AC or DV-AC.
