【発明の詳細な説明】
【０００１】
【発明の属する技術分野】本発明は情報検索に関する。
詳細にいえば、本発明は第１マークアップ言語のプロフ
ァイルとトピックによって編成された複数の情報の受信
と、第２のマークアップ言語の情報の部分への複数の情
報の構文解析とを含んでいる情報検索のためのクライア
ント／サーバ・モデルに関する。上記情報の部分にはハ
イパーテキストの閲覧およびアクセスを可能とするため
の情報の各部分を参照するアンカを含んでいる

【従来の技術】Ｉｎｔｅｒｎｅｔなどのコンピュータ化
された情報資源、Ｃｏｍｐｕｓｅｒｖｅ、Ａｍｅｒｉｃ
ａ Ｏｎｌｉｎｅ、Ｐｒｏｄｉｇｙなどの各種のオンラ
イン・サービス、およびその他のサービスの発展によっ
て、電子的に利用できる情報が急激に増加してきた。事
実、この電子的情報は新聞、雑誌、さらにはテレビジョ
ンなどの従来からの情報伝送手段に置き換わることが増
加してきている。これらの資源すべてにおける主な問題
は、利用可能な大量の情報を選別して、ユーザが感心の
ある情報を得られるようにすることである。
【０００３】現在、上記のサービスの１つに加入してい
たり、Ｉｎｔｅｒｎｅｔを使用しているユーザは、状況
によっては、手作業で各種の情報資源を走査して、記事
や掲示あるいは関心のある情報を得ている。通常、ユー
ザは手作業で関心のある分野やソース（パブリケーショ
ン、ＵＳＥＮＥＴ Ｎｅｗｓｇｒｏｕｐ、フォーラム、
またはトピックごとに分類されたその他の分野）を走査
して、ユーザに関心のあるトピックの分野を探し出して
いた。ユーザは次いで、たとえば、自分が読みたいもの
に合致する主題の見出しのついている記事またはファイ
ルを検索する。たとえば、Ｉｎｔｅｒｎｅｔの掲示にあ
るＵＳＥＮＥＴ Ｎｅｗｓｇｒｏｕｐは手動操作を可能
とする関連する主題の見出しを有していることがしばし
ばある。新聞／雑誌サービスの記事の見出しは同様な機
能を果たす。それ故、ユーザが売り物の製品についての
ストーリーの閲覧を望まない場合、主題の見出しに「売
り物」という用語がついている掲示を無視するだけであ
る。最後に、選別の最後のレベルとして、ユーザはトピ
ックおよび主題の見出し別に選別したストーリーを読
み、ストーリーの閲覧中にユーザが記事の他の部分を無
視したいものが出てきた場合には、読むのをやめ、スト
ーリーを放棄することができる。希望する場合には、ユ
ーザは任意の数の従来技術の方法で残りのストーリーを
ダウンロードし、後で閲覧することができる。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】明らかに、ユーザが関
与しなければならないこの手動走査プロセスはきわめて
時間のかかるものである。ある程度までニュースは読者
向けに選別済みである。何らかの雑誌／新聞を購読した
り、何らかのテレビジョン・ネットワークを視聴してい
る人は、これらの人々向けに選別された電子的に利用可

サブセットを生成する必要が生じている。

いる。ユーザ固有のパラメータに基づいて、ファクシミ
リその他の手段によって情報の検索を可能とするものが
ある。いくつかの商業サービスは事前定義したプロファ
イルに基づいて関心のある記事を検索するためのファク
シミリ・サービスを提供している。これらのプロファイ
ルは会社ごとに、あるいは主題の分野ごとにグループ分
けされたものを含んでいる。関心の対象となる記事は標
準的な従来技術の技法（たとえば、ブール探索項）を使
用して検索される。これらのサービスはしかしながら、
広範囲にわたって情報をディジタル形式（たとえば、ユ

第１のファイルを解析して、プロファイルのリストの各

する少なくとも１つの記事（もしあれば）、および少な
くとも１つの記事に対して対応する摘要を決定する。プ
ロファイルのリストの各々に対するそれぞれ少なくとも
１つの対応トピックに関する少なくとも１つの記事（も
しあれば）に対する第４のファイルおよび第５のファイ
ルを生成する。第４のファイルは情報の第１のファイル
のそれぞれ少なくとも１つの記事の摘要、および第５の
ファイルに対するアンカを含んでおり、第５のファイル
はプロファイルのリストの各々に対するそれぞれ少なく
とも１つの対応トピックに関する少なくとも１つの記事
（もしあれば）に対するテキストを含んでいる。実現さ
れた実施態様においては、複数の第５のファイルを参照
するアンカを含んでいる第６のファイルも作成でき、第
６のファイルのアンカは各プロファイルおよび対応トピ
ックごとに配列されている。情報の第１のファイルは電
子メール（ｅメール）メッセージの受信を含むことがで
きる。第１のファイルの処理、およびアンカを含んでい
る他のファイルの作成によって、処理された情報のハイ
パーテキストでの表示および縦覧が可能となる。

めのコンピュータで実現された方法および装置は、ハイ
パーテキスト変換プロトコルコルを使用して、第１のマ
ークアップ言語によって生成された、プロファイルのリ
ストおよびプロファイルのリストの各々に対する少なく
とも１つの対応トピックを含んでいる表示をユーザに対
して表示することを含んでいる。ユーザはハイパーテキ
スト変換プロトコルコルによって、第２の複数のプロフ
ァイルのリストに対する第１の複数の少なくとも１つの
対応トピックを選択することができる。ユーザはハイパ
ーテキスト変換プロトコルコルによって少なくとも１つ
の探索項を入力することができる。探索は探索項を使用
して情報の第１のデータベースで行うことができる。情

示す。クライアントおよびサーバは２つのコンピュータ
・システムで作動するプロセスであって、高水準プログ
ラミング言語（たとえば、ＰＥＲＬ）によって生成され
た、実行時にコンピュータ・システム（たとえば、ワー
クステーション）で解釈され、実行されるプロセスであ
るが、当分野の技術者には、これらをプログラムによる
ものであっても、専用のものであってもよい各種のハー
ドウェア装置によって実現できることが理解できよう。
【００１４】クライアント１００およびサーバ１５０は
ハイパーテキスト変換プロトコルコル（ＨＴＴＰ）によ
って提供される機能を使用して通信を行う。ワールド・
ワイド・ウェブ（ＷＷＷ）、縮めて「ウェブ」はこの規
格に合致しており、ユニフォーム・リソース・ロケータ
（ＵＲＬ）によってクライアントにアクセス可能なすべ
てのサーバを含んでいる。たとえば、通信を通信媒体２
５０でもたらすことができる。実施形態によっては、ク
ライアントおよびサーバを大容量通信用のシリアル・ラ
イン・インターネット・プロトコル（ＳＬＩＰ）すなわ
ちＴＣＰ／ＩＰ接続によって結合してもかまわない。ク
ライアント内では「ブラウザ」２００といわれる第１の
プロセスが活動しており、これはサーバ１５０との接続

ウザ２００はイリノイ州Ｕｒｂａｎａ−Ｃｈａｍｐａｉ
ｇｎのＮａｔｉｏｎａｌＣｅｎｔｅｒ ｆｏｒ Ｓｕｐ
ｅｒｃｏｍｐｕｔｉｎｇ Ａｐｐｌｉｃａｔｉｏｎｓ
（ＮＣＳＡ）から入手できるＭｏｓａｉｃブランドのブ
ラウザである。入手可能であり、ＨＴＴＰおよびＭｏｓ
ａｉｃブラウザで規定された機能を備えているＮｅｔｓ
ｃａｐｅ、ＮｅｔｃｒｕｉｓｅｒあるいはＬｙｎｘブラ
ンドのブラウザなどの他のブラウザを使用してもよい。
【００１５】サーバ１５０はＨＴＴＰ応答の形でクライ
アントに情報を与える対応したサーバ・ソフトウェアを
実行する。ＨＴＴＰ応答はハイパーテキスト・マークア
ップ言語（ＨＴＭＬ）を使用して表されたウェブの「ペ
ージ」または、以下で説明するようにサーバによって生
成されるその他のデータに対応している。
【００１６】Ｍｏｓａｉｃブランドのブラウザの下で
は、サーバによってもたらされるＨＴＭＬ機能２１０
（ハイパーテキストの閲覧および項目の選択に基づくあ
る種のテキストおよびその他のデータの表示および検
索）に加えて、クライアント・プログラムがサーバに指
示して、サーバ内に収められている特定のプログラムの
実行を開始させることを可能とする共通ゲートウェイ・
インタフェース（ＣＧＩ）２２０が用意されている。こ
れはサーバに受信した情報を操作して、クライアントを
制御しているユーザに表示する探索エンジンを含んでい
る。このインタフェースおよびＨＴＴＰを使用すると、
サーバは完了時にその実行の結果をクライアントに通知
することもできる。
【００１７】このサーバ常駐プロセスの実行のパラメー
タを制御するために、クライアントはそのブラウザから
いくつかの「フォーム」の記入を指示することができ

るワークステーションはシステム３００を含んでいる。
３００は情報を通信するためのバスその他の通信手段３
０１、および情報を処理するための、バス３０１に結合
された処理手段３０２を含んでいる。システム３００は
さらに、バス３０１に結合された、情報およびプロセッ
サ３０２によって実行される命令を記憶するためのラン
ダム・アクセス・メモリ（ＲＡＭ）その他の揮発性記憶
装置３０４（メイン・メモリと呼ぶ）を含んでいる。メ
イン・メモリ３０４を使用して、プロセッサ３０２によ
る命令の実行中に一時変数またはその他の中間情報を記
憶することもできる。システム３００はプロセッサ３０
２用のスタティックな情報および命令を記憶するため

ーザに情報を表示するための陰極線管（ＣＲＴ）または
液晶表示装置（ＬＣＤ）などのバス３０１に結合された
表示装置３２１に結合される。この表示装置３２１はさ

合されている。フレーム・バッファには表示装置３２１
に表示する単一または複数のフレームまたは画像などの

およびコマンドの選択をプロセッサ３０２へ通信し、表
示装置３２１上でのカーソルの運動を制御するためにバ
ス３０１に結合されたマウス、トラックボール、スタイ
ラス、またはカーソル方向キーなどのカーソル制御装置

ｎ Ｍｉｃｒｏｓｙｓｔｅｍｓ（登録商標）ブランド・
ファミリーのワークステーションの１つである。プロセ
ッサ３０２はカリフォルニア州Ｍｏｕｎｔａｉｎ Ｖｉ
ｅｗのＳｕｎ Ｍｉｃｒｏｓｙｓｔｅｍｓ（登録商
標），Ｉｎｃ．製のＳＰＡＲＣブランドのマイクロプロ
セッサの１つである。
【００２２】本明細書記載の各種の実施形態の以下の説
明は、特に、実行時にシステム３００で解釈ないし実行
される高水準プログラミング言語（たとえば、ＰＥＲＬ
インタプリタ言語）で生成された一連のルーチンについ
て述べるものであることに留意されたい。これらはさら
に、ＨＴＭＬでの表示の外観についての指定を含め、上
述したように、ＮＣＳＡから入手可能なブラウザおよび
サーバ・ソフトウェアとともに使用することもできる。
しかしながら、当分野の技術者には、離散論理装置、大
規模集積回路（ＬＳＩ）、特定用途向け集積回路（ＡＳ
ＩＣ）、その他の特殊ハードウェアなどの特殊目的のハ
ードウェアで、以下の方法および装置を実現できること
が理解できよう。本明細書の記載は同様な機能を有する
装置に同等に適用できるものである。

成要素を形成するプロセスを詳細に示すものである。Ｐ
ＥＲＬで実施されたＳＧＭＬ／ＨＴＭＬパーサ／コンバ
ータ・プロセス４００はＣＧＩ２２０を介してサーバと
通信し、サーバに常駐しているファイル内の情報に対す
る、探索要求を含むユーザ要求を処理し、応答すること
ができる。さらに、探索結果フォーマッタ・プロセス４
３０がユーザ探索要求に応じていくつかのＨＴＭＬファ
イル４２０を作成し、ＦｒｅｅＷＡＩＳ探索を行うこと
もできる。ＳＧＭＬメール・メッセージによって記憶さ
れたＨＴＭＬバージョンの記事を指定された探索項が存
在しているかどうかについて探索し、他のＨＴＭＬファ
イルをこれに応じて作成する。これらの探索要求のＨＴ
ＭＬでの結果を次いで、クライアントのコンソールに表
示することができる。実行された実施形態において、サ
ーバに常駐するＨＴＭＬファイル４２０は、第２のプロ
セス、すなわちニュース・ソース４１０から受信した電

トワーク媒体によってサーバと通信することができる。
この実施形態において、ニュース・ソースはｅメール・
メッセージ、すなわちテキストを特定し、分類するのに
役立つ標準汎用マークアップ言語（ＳＧＭＬ）テキスト
に埋め込まれる。これを図５に示す。これは実施形態の
１つにすぎず、他のソース（たとえばＵＳＥＮＥＴ Ｎ
ｅｗｓｇｒｏｕｐｓ）をニュース・ソースとして使用す
ることもできる。

ル／トピック（キー）情報を含んでいる。もちろん、テ
キストは任意の数の記述／フォーマット言語で受信する
ことができる。プロファイルは本実施形態において、１
つまたは多数のトピックである。たとえば、プロファイ
ル・リスト・ファイルには「Ｓｕｎ＿Ｅｘｐｒｅｓｓ＿
Ｎｅｗｓ．ｌｉｓｔ」という題名がつけられており、こ

を表すディレクトリ５０１を必要に応じ作成することが

のタイプのファイル、すなわち記事の摘要と記事自体が
各記事に対して記憶される。摘要（概要ともいう）は情
報の検索の結果の閲覧時に、特定の記事の詳細な検討が
必要かどうかを決定するために、ユーザによって使用さ
れる。

を参照して検討する。プロセスは対話型のＰＥＲＬスク
リプトとし実施され、所定の時間枠（たとえば、１５
分）が経過するまで遊休状態である（ステップ７０
２）。この時間枠が経過すると、サーバがＳＧＭＬフォ
ーマット化テキストを含んでいる新しいメール・メッセ

および対応する記事の単一のコピーに対するリンクだけ

る。ｋｅｙ.ｈｔｍｌ ファイル（記事を参照するため
の）がステップ７５８で作成される。プロセスは図１１

ァイルがサブディレクトリに含まれているかどうかが検
出される。検出されない場合には、プロセスは図１０の

ＴＰサーバがクライアントの接続に対する要求を検出し
たときに、セッションが通常開始される（ステップ８０
２）。次いで、要求されたページ、通常はホーム・ペー
ジを、ステップ８０４においてクライアントのブラウザ

の要因、および任意の数のオカレンスをこの順序で含ん
でいる。他の、もっと複雑な関連性の尺度を使用しても
よい。ストーリーの見出しが、ストーリー自体を参照す
るアンカとして表示される。探索が完了すると、要求の
ページ、この場合には、探索の結果がステップ８０４で
再度表示される。

Claims (7)

    【特許請求の範囲】
  1. 【請求項１】 ａ．情報の内容を識別するための第１の
    マークアップ言語を含んでいる情報の第１のファイルを
    受けるステップと、 ｂ．情報の前記第１のファイルの受けに応じて、情報の
    前記第１のファイルを解析して、プロファイルのリスト
    と、そのプロファイルのリストの各々に対応する少なく
    とも１つのトピックとを生成するステップと、 ｃ．前記プロファイルの前記リストと、プロファイルの
    前記リストの各々に対応する少なくとも１つのトピック
    に対する第３のマークアップ言語の少なくとも１つの対
    応する第３のファイルを含んでいる第２のマークアップ
    言語の第２のファイルを生成し、前記第２のファイルが
    各少なくとも１つの対応する第３のファイルを参照する
    アンカを含んでおり、情報の前記第１のファイルの第１
    のマークアップ・インスタンスが前記の第２のファイル
    または前記の第３のファイルのいずれかにおける第２の
    マークアップ・インスタンスに変換されるステップと、 ｄ．情報の第１のファイルを解析して、前記プロファイ
    ルのリストの前記の各々に対応する各少なくとも１つの
    トピックに対する前記少なくとも１つの記事（もしあれ
    ば）、および前記の少なくとも１つの記事に対する対応
    する摘要を決定するステップと、 ｅ．前記プロファイルのリストの前記の各々に対する前
    記の各少なくとも１つの対応トピックに対する前記少な
    くとも１つの記事（もしあれば）に対して第４のファイ
    ルと第５のファイルを生成し、前記第４のファイルが情
    報の前記第１のファイルの前記少なくとも１つの記事の
    摘要および前記第５のファイルに対するアンカを含んで
    おり、前記第５のファイルが前記プロファイルのリスト
    の前記各々に対する前記各少なくとも１つの対応トピッ
    クに対する前記の少なくとも１つの記事（もしあれば）
    に対するテキストを含んでいるステップとからなる情報
    を検索するためのコンピュータで実施される方法。
  2. 【請求項２】 複数の前記第５のファイルを参照する複
    数のアンカを含んでいる第６のファイルを生成するステ
    ップをさらに含んでおり、前記第６のファイルのアンカ
    が各前記プロファイルおよび対応するトピックごとに配
    列されていることを特徴とする請求項１に記載の方法。
  3. 【請求項３】 前記プロファイルの前記リストの各々に
    対するディレクトリと前記プロファイルのリストの各々
    に対応する少なくとも１つのトピックに対する少なくと
    も１つのサブディレクトリを作成するステップと、前記
    プロファイルのリストの前記各々に対する前記各少なく
    とも１つの対応トピックに対する前記少なくとも１つの
    記事（もしあれば）に対する前記第３および第４のファ
    イルを前記サブディレクトリに記憶するステップとをさ
    らに含んでいることを特徴とする請求項１に記載の方
    法。
  4. 【請求項４】 ａ．情報の第１のファイルを解析して、
    プロファイルのリストとそのプロファイルのリストの各
    々に対応する少なくとも１つのトピックとを生成するス
    テップと、 ｂ．前記プロファイルのリストと前記プロファイルのリ
    ストの各々に対応する少なくとも１つのトピックとを有
    する第２のファイルを生成するステップと、 ｃ．情報の前記第１のファイルを解析して、前記プロフ
    ァイルのリストの前記各々に対応する少なくとも１つの
    トピックに対する前記の少なくとも１つの記事（もしあ
    れば）を決定するステップと、 ｄ．前記プロファイルのリストの各々に対応する少なく
    とも１つのトピックに対する少なくとも１つの記事（も
    しあれば）に対する第３のファイルを生成し、その第３
    のファイルが前記プロファイルのリストの各々に対応す
    る少なくとも１つのトピックに対する前記の少なくとも
    １つの記事（もしあれば）に対するテキストを含んでい
    るステップと、 ｅ．前記プロファイルのリストの各々に対応する少なく
    とも１つのトピックに対する前記の少なくとも１つの記
    事（もしあれば）に対する前記第３のファイルを参照す
    るアンカを前記第２のファイルに挿入するステップとか
    らなる情報を検索するためのコンピュータで実施される
    方法。
  5. 【請求項５】 電子メール（ｅメール）メッセージ中の
    情報の前記第１のファイルを受けるステップをさらに含
    んでいることを特徴とする請求項４に記載の方法。
  6. 【請求項６】 ａ．ハイパーテキスト変換プロトコルを
    使用して、プロファイルのリストとそのプロファイルの
    リストの各々に対応する少なくとも１つのトピックとを
    含んでいる、第１のマークアップ言語によって生成され
    た表示をユーザに対して表示するステップと、 ｂ．前記ハイパーテキスト変換プロトコルによって、第
    ２の複数の前記プロファイルのリストに対する第１の複
    数の前記少なくとも１つの対応トピックをユーザが選択
    できるようにするステップと、 ｃ．前記ハイパーテキスト変換プロトコルによって、前
    記ユーザが少なくとも１つの探索項を入力できるように
    するステップと、 ｄ．情報の第１のデータベースの前記探索項を使用して
    探査を実行するステップであって、その情報の第１のデ
    ータベースが前記プロファイルの前記リストおよび前記
    プロファイルの各々に対応する少なくとも１つのトピッ
    クとによって編成されており、前記探索が前記第２の複
    数の前記プロファイルのリストに対応する前記第１の少
    なくとも１つのトピックの各々に対応している、情報の
    前記第１のデータベース内の位置で実行されるステップ
    とからなる情報を検索するためのコンピュータで実施さ
    れる方法。
  7. 【請求項７】 前記ハイパーテキスト変換プロトコルに
    よって、前記第１のデータベースにおける前記探索項を
    使用した前記探索の結果を表示し、前記探索の結果がそ
    の探索の前記結果を表す第１のマークアップ言語ファイ
    ルによって形成された第１の表示を含んでおり、前記第
    １のマークアップ言語のファイルが少なくとも１つのア
    ンカを含んでおり、前記各少なくとも１つのアンカが前
    記第２の複数の前記プロファイルのリストに対する前記
    第１の複数の前記少なくとも１つの対応トピックの１つ
    に対する各記事に対する前記探索項を含んでいるテキス
    トを含んでいる第２のファイルを参照するステップをさ
    らに含んでいることを特徴とする請求項６に記載の方
    法。
