Abstract
で、かつ製造コストおよび保全コストが低廉であるにも
拘らず、非線形効果を低減し得る光ファイバケーブルを
提供する。 【解決手段】 第1の有効面積と所定の動作波長範囲に
おける正の分散特性とを有し、かつほぼ等しい長さを有
する2つのセグメント230からなる単一モード光ファ
イバである第1の光ファイバと、第2の有効面積と上記
所定の動作波長範囲における負の分散特性とを有し、第
1の光ファイバの2つのセグメント230間に連結され
た第2の光ファイバ240とによって、上記所定の動作
波長範囲における平均全体分散値がほぼゼロとなる対称
性光ファイバケーブルを構成する。
Description
ルに関し、特に、分散特性の管理された対称性光ファイ
バケーブルおよびこれを用いた光送信システムに関する
ものである。
ァイバを通って送信される光波長信号は、それらの実際
の送信距離を制約する種々の歪および減衰の原因となる
非線形効果の影響を受ける。典型的には、光ファイバ
は、光端末装置と、光ファイバによって接続された複数
の増幅・中継器とからなるファイバ光システムに使用さ
れる。典型的には、送信路に沿って規則正しい間隔で配
置される増幅・中継器は信号パルスの強度を高める役目
を果たし、これによって、減衰の影響が克服される。送
信路の全体の長さは、光ファイバの光学的非直線性から
生じる位相シフトによって制約される。
光ファイバの種々の特性によって影響される。このよう
な特性の1つに、ファイバの「有効断面積」または簡単
に「有効面積」がある。与えられた出力の光信号は、有
効面積が大きい程、信号は実質的な損失なしにファイバ
を通って伝搬することができる。したがって、大きな有
効面積を有するファイバを用いることは、増幅・中継器
間の光ファイバの区間延長を可能にするとともに、送信
システム全体の長さの延長を可能にする。
1つの重要な特性は光ファイバの分散特性である。ファ
イバの分散特性に特に敏感な非線形効果は、自己位相変
調(self- phase modulation)、クロス位相変調(cros
s-phase modulation)および4光子混合(four-photon
mixing)のようなパラメトリックな過程を含む。ファイ
バにおける分散は、パルス信号の送信路に沿った周波数
拡張を生み、影響は累積され、信号が受信機に入力され
る以前に信号の濾波が必要になる。しかし、濾波を行な
っても、受信信号の帯域拡大は信号対ノイズ比を悪化さ
せ、信号エラーの増大を導く。したがって、光送信シス
テムの動作波長範囲における分散特性をゼロに近くする
ことが望ましい。長距離送信システムのための使い易い
動作波長範囲の1つは1530nmと1560nmとの間で
ある。

6ps/nm/kmの分散値を有する比較的短い通常のファイバ
と、−2.5ps/nm/kmの分散値を有するより長い分散シ
フトファイバとからなる、ゼロに近い平均分散特性を有
する送信システムが開示されている。

示され、第1の光ファイバは、第2の光ファイバよりも
実質的に大きい有効面積と、所定の動作波長範囲におい
て第2の光ファイバよりも実質的に低い分散特性とを有
する。より大きい有効面積と正の分散特性とを有する第
1の光ファイバは、端末装置または中継器の後に配置さ
れ、かつより小さい有効面積と負の分散特性とを有する
第2の光ファイバの前に配置されて、長距離に亘る非線
形効果を低減させている。

て、より長い距離に亘る非線形効果を低減する。

平均全体分散値がほぼゼロとなる光ファイバケーブルを
創り出す。この光ファイバケーブルは、光端末装置と少
なくとも1つの中継器とを備えた光ファイバ送信システ
ムに使用可能である。

ルは、互いに反対方向に送信するための独立した2本の
光ファイバを備えた非対称性光ファイバケーブルのよう
な特別の形式の複雑な構成を何等必要としないために、
従来のケーブルよりも製造が容易である。また、この分
散特性の管理された対称性光ファイバケーブルは、容易
に入手可能な光ファイバを用いているために、かつ必要
とする光ファイバの量が低減されたより簡素な構成を有
するために、従来のケーブルよりも製造コストおよび保
全コストが低廉である。
光ファイバケーブルのより簡素な構成は、ファイバ光シ
ステムの設計をより容易にもする。この分散特性の管理
された対称性光ファイバケーブルは、光信号を送信する
各中継器または端末装置の後に、大きな有効面積を有す
る光ファイバのセグメントを依然として備えているため
に、従来のケーブルよりも簡素な構成を有するにも拘ら
ず、非線形効果を低減することが可能である。

器120との間および中継器120間に各方向のための
2本の非対称性光ファイバケーブルを配置する必要性を
無くすことによって、システム200の最初の構築およ
び運用中の保全を簡単にする。
ーブル250はまた、容易に入手可能な光ファイバを用
いているために、かつ必要とする光ファイバの量を減ら
したより簡素な構成であるために、従来のケーブルより
も製造および保全の点でより安価でもある。分散特性の
管理された対称性光ファイバケーブル250は従来のケ
ーブルよりも簡素な構成であるにも拘らず、光信号を送
信する各中継器120または端末装置110の後に大き
な有効面積を有する第1の光ファイバのセグメント23
0を依然として備えているために、非線形効果を低減す
ることができる。

分散特性の管理された対称性光ファイバケーブル250
はまた、2つのセグメント230からなる第1の光ファ
イバと、第2の光ファイバ240とによって構成されて
いる。2つのセグメント230からなる第1の光ファイ
バは、大きい有効面積と正の分散特性(+D)とを有
し、通常のSMFタイプのファイバであることが好まし
い。本実施の形態では、第1の光ファイバは約70〜9
0μm2 の有効面積と、約1530〜1560nmの動
作波長領域において約15〜20ps/nm/kmの分散特性と
を有するが、これとは異なる有効面積と異なる分散特性
を備えた光ファイバも使用可能である。

ける分散特性の管理された対称性光ファイバケーブル2

ように創り出される。本実施の形態では、動作波長範囲
における所望の平均全体分散値がゼロに近いが、必要で
あれば他の値も選択可能である。
ーブル250を創り出すために、第1の光ファイバの各
セグメント230と第2の光ファイバ240との全長
は、分散特性の管理された対称性光ファイバケーブル2
50全体の平均分散特性が動作波長範囲において所望の
平均全体分散値になるように選択される。第1の光ファ
イバのセグメント230と第2の光ファイバ240との
長さは、第1の光ファイバのセグメント230について
の分散特性の大きさと第2の光ファイバ240について
の分散特性の大きさとの比に基づいて決定される。シス
テム200に使用される端末装置110および中継器1

光ファイバ240の長さとの比が約1:10ないし1:

ができる。さらに、本実施の形態においては、端末装置
110を中継器120に結合するケーブル250の長
さ、あるいは中継器120を他の中継器120に結合す
るケーブル250の長さは、約60ないし140kmの間
であるが、ケーブル250の長さは必要に応じて変える
ることができる。
バケーブル250がいずれの方向に対しても等しい効率
をもって送信を行なうことができるために、光ファイバ
ケーブル250の対称構造は、図1に示すような、端末
装置110と中継器120の間、または中継器120間
の各方向に送信のための光ファイバを備えた非対称配置
を著しく簡素化する。ケーブル250が、通常のSMF
またはNZDファイバのような入手の容易な光ファイバ
を用いていることによって、かつ各方向について独立し
た光ファイバが不要なために光ファイバの使用量が少な
くなることによって、分散特性の管理された対称性光フ
ァイバケーブル250の簡素化された構成は、製造コス
トおよび運用中の保全コストを従来のケーブルよりも低
減する。
