(57)【要約】 【課題】 レシピエントが受信するジャンク電子メール
の数、および、ユーザが送信する電子メールの数を減ら
す。 【解決手段】 電子メールメッセージにレシピエント指
定子を追加することによって電子メールシステムのユー
ザが受信するジャンク電子メールの量を減らす。レシピ
エント指定子は、メッセージが送られるグループ内で実
際にそのメッセージを受信すべきレシピエントをさらに
指定する非アドレス情報である。レシピエントのメール
フィルタは、そのレシピエントに関する情報にアクセス
可能であり、その情報を、電子メールメッセージ内の非
アドレス情報とともに使用して、そのメッセージを当該
レシピエントに提供すべきかどうかを判断する。非アド
レス情報およびレシピエントに関する情報が、当該レシ
ピエントはそのメッセージを受信すべきでないことを示

【発明の詳細な説明】
【０００１】
【発明の属する技術分野】本発明は、電子メッセージン
グに関し、特に、電子メールに関する。
【０００２】
【従来の技術】従来のメールシステムにおいて主に不快
であることとしてジャンクメールがある。電子メールが
広く利用可能になるにつれて、ジャンク電子メールもま
た問題となっている。実際、電子メールメッセージを多
くのレシピエント（受け手）に送ることが容易である結
果、ジャンク電子メールはジャンク通常メール（郵便）
より一層問題を困難にしている。
【０００３】従来技術は、電子メールレシピエントのロ
ーカル電子メールシステムにおける「メールフィルタ」
によってジャンク電子メールの問題に対処しようとして
きた。このようなフィルタは、レシピエント宛の着信電
子メールを、そのレシピエントによって決定されたカテ
ゴリに分類する。フィルタは、各電子メールメッセージ
がレシピエントに到達するごとにそれを単にスキャン
し、それをどのカテゴリに入れるべきかを決定する。１
つのカテゴリとしてもちろん「破棄」がある。フィルタ
がそのカテゴリに入れるメッセージは自動的に破棄され
る。従来のフィルタは、さまざまな程度のインテリジェ
ンスを有する。あるものは単にソースアドレスのリスト
とともに動作し、メッセージのソースに従って分類す
る。また、レシピエントによって提供されるキーワード
を使用して分類するものもある。また、レシピエントが
自分のメールをどのように分類するかをしばらく観察し
た後、同様にして分類することができるフィルタもあ

【０００４】ジャンクメールの１つの理由は、今日の電
子メールシステムが、レシピエントを電子メールアドレ
スによってアドレスすることを要求していることであ
る。電子メールメッセージが、それに関心のある可能性
のあるすべての人に到達することを保証するためには、
センダ（送り手）は一般に、関心のある可能性のある人
を含むがその他の多くの人も含むアドレスのリストを使
用する。実際に関心のある人以外のすべての人にとっ
て、その電子メールはもちろんジャンクメールとなる。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】ジャンクメールの量を
減らすために必要とされるのは、センダが、電子メール
アドレスに加えて何か実際にその電子メールを受信する
人の種類を指定するものを使用することを可能にする技
術、および、フィルタが、センダによって提供される情
報を使用して、そのような種類の人だけが実際にその電
子メールを受信するようにメールをフィルタリングする
ことを可能にする技術である。本発明の目的は、このよ
うな技術を提供すること、および、それにより、電子メ
ールシステムのユーザが受信するジャンク電子メールの
量を減らすことである。

【課題を解決するための手段】本発明は、電子メールメ
ッセージにレシピエント指定子を追加することによって
電子メールシステムのユーザが受信するジャンク電子メ
ールの量を減らす。レシピエント指定子は、メッセージ
が送られるグループ内で実際にそのメッセージを受信す
べきレシピエントをさらに指定する非アドレス情報であ
る。レシピエントのメールフィルタは、そのレシピエン
トに関する情報にアクセス可能であり、その情報を、電
子メールメッセージ内の非アドレス情報とともに使用し
て、そのメッセージを当該レシピエントに提供すべきか
どうかを判断する。非アドレス情報およびレシピエント
に関する情報が、当該レシピエントはそのメッセージを
受信すべきでないことを示した場合、フィルタはそれを
提供しない。
【０００７】本発明の第２の特徴によれば、センダのメ
ールフィルタがフィルタリングを行う。センダは、非ア
ドレス情報を使用してレシピエントを指定するレシピエ
ント指定子をメールフィルタに提供する。しかし、この
場合、センダのメールフィルタは、レシピエントに関す
る情報にアクセス可能であり、この情報を、非アドレス
情報とともに使用して、メッセージを送信すべきレシピ
エントを判断する。
【０００８】本発明の第３の特徴、すなわち、電子メー
ルシステム内で専門家を探索するシステムでは、本発明
の第１および第２の特徴が組み合わせられる。このシス
テムでは、センダは、専門領域に関連するキーワードの
リストによって、専門領域を指定する。キーワードのリ
ストは、メッセージ内のレシピエント指定子に含まれ
る。レシピエントのメールフィルタは、当該レシピエン
トの文書ファイル、および、当該レシピエントによって
送受信される電子メールメッセージのリストにアクセス
可能である。メールフィルタは、文書ファイルを使用し
て、レシピエントの専門領域を判断する。レシピエント
指定子内のキーワードが専門領域のうちの１つと一致し
た場合、メールフィルタその電子メールメッセージをレ
シピエントに提供する。一致しなかった場合、メールフ
ィルタは、電子メールメッセージのリストを使用して、
レシピエント指定子で指定された専門領域を有する可能
性のあるレシピエントのコレスポンデント（伝え手）を
判定し、それらのコレスポンデントに当該メッセージを
転送する。実際にメッセージをレシピエントに提供する
レシピエントのメールフィルタはさらに、そのメッセー
ジのセンダに照会メッセージを送る。こうして、当該セ
ンダは誰が当該メッセージを実際に受信したかを知る。

【発明の実施の形態】以下で、まず、本発明の概観を説
明した後、本発明が電子メールシステムにおける専門家
を探索する装置においてどのように実現されるかについ
て説明する。
【００１０】［本発明の概観：図１］図１に、本発明を
実現する装置１０１の高水準の概観を示す。装置１０１
は、いくつかのユーザ１０５（ａ..ｎ）を接続するネッ
トワーク１０３において使用される。ネットワーク１０
３は、インターネットまたは商用電子メールネットワー
クのようなネットワークとすることが可能であり、ある
いは、単一のコンピュータシステムのユーザ間で通信す
る電子メールシステムであることも可能である。各ユー
ザ１０５は、ユーザ１０５が電子メールメッセージを送
受信することが可能なリンク１０７によってネットワー
ク１０３に接続される。本発明で使用されるメール項目
の種類を１１９に示す。メール項目１１９は、以下の２
つの追加要素を除いては標準的な電子メールメッセージ
である。

るレシピエントのリストである。
【００１２】レシピエント指定子１２１は２つの部分を
有する。一方は、レシピエント型フィールド１２３であ
り、一般に、レシピエント指定子１２１をどのように解
釈するかを示す。他方は、レシピエント記述１２５であ
り、メール項目１１９をレシピエントに提供すべきかど
うかを判断するために実際に使用される非アドレス情報
を含む。
【００１３】受信するジャンク電子メールの量を減らし
たいユーザ１０５は、電子メールシステムの一部として
メールフィルタ１０９を有する。電子メール項目１１９
がユーザ１０５のアドレスに送られると、メールフィル
タ１０９はレシピエント指定子１２１を解釈し、メール
項目１１９をユーザ１０５（ｎ）に提供すべきかどうか
を判断する。レシピエント指定子１２１を解釈する際
に、メールフィルタ１０９はユーザモデル１１３を使用
する。ユーザモデル１１３は、ユーザ１０５（ｎ）のモ
デルを提供するデータである。レシピエント記述１２５
が、ユーザモデル１１３によって指定されるのと同じ種
類のレシピエントを指定している場合、メールフィルタ
１０９は、フィルタ済みメール１１５にメール項目１１
９を追加し、対話型ユーザメールインタフェース１１７
を通じて、メールが到着したことをユーザ１０５（ｎ）
に通知する。ユーザ１０５（ｎ）が希望する場合、メー
ルフィルタ１０９はさらに、照会リスト１２７内の情報
を使用して、メッセージがユーザ１０５（ｎ）に送られ

によっては、メールフィルタ１０９は、照会リスト１２
７内の情報を使用して、電子メールメッセージ、照会の
チェイン、およびユーザ１０５（ｎ）を識別するレシー
ト（受領証）１２９をメール項目１１９のもとのセンダ
に送ることも可能である。
【００１４】ユーザモデル１１３が、レシピエント記述
１２５によって指定されるのと同じ種類のレシピエント
を指定していない場合、メールフィルタ１０９は、コレ
スポンデントモデル１１１を参照して、メール項目１１
９をどこへ送るべきかを判断する。ユーザ１０５（ｎ）
の頻繁なコレスポンデントごとにコレスポンデントモデ
ル１１１（ｍ）があり、ユーザモデル１１３と同様に、
各コレスポンデントモデル１１１（ｍ）は、メールフィ
ルタ１０９がレシピエント記述１２５とともに使用して
ユーザ１０５（ｎ）のどのコレスポンデントがメール項
目１１９を受け取るべきかを判断するデータを含む。次
に、メールフィルタ１０９はそれらのコレスポンデント
の名前および電子メールアドレスをメール項目１１９内
の照会リスト１２７に追加し、メール項目１１９をそれ
らのコレスポンデントに転送する。さらに、それらのコ
レスポンデントがメールフィルタ１０９を有する場合
は、それらのコレスポンデントも上記のようにメール項
目１１９をフィルタリングすることになる。実施例で
は、ユーザ１０５（ｎ）は、転送に対してどのくらいの

は、完全に自動とすることも可能であり、あるいは、メ
ールフィルタ１０９がユーザ１０５（ｎ）に、レシピエ
ント記述１２５からの情報および転送のために発見した
コレスポンデントのリストを提示し、転送されたレター
をどのコレスポンデントが受け取るかを選択させること
も可能である。
【００１５】ユーザ１０５（ｎ）は、レシピエント指定
子１２１を有する電子メールメッセージを送信したい場
合、メールフィルタ１０９にその要求をする。メールフ
ィルタ１０９は、インタフェース１１７を使用して、ユ
ーザ１０５（ｎ）から、レシピエント指定子１２１を作
成するために使用する情報を取得する。次に、メールフ
ィルタ１０９は、上記のように、レシピエント指定子１
２１をコレスポンデントモデル１１１とともに使用し
て、メッセージを受信すべきコレスポンデントのリスト
を作成する。実装に応じて、メールフィルタ１０９は、
単に電子メールメッセージをそれらのコレスポンデント
に送ることも可能であり、あるいは、ユーザ１０５
（ｎ）に、リストからコレスポンデントを選択させるこ
とも可能である。選択されたコレスポンデントはもちろ
ん照会リスト１２７に入れられる。
【００１６】図１で、メールフィルタ１０９、コレスポ
ンデントモデル１１１およびユーザモデル１１３はすべ
て、ユーザ１０５（ｎ）によって使用されるローカルコ
ンピュータシステムに実装される。このような実装は、
コレスポンデントモデル１１１およびユーザモデル１１
３内の情報がユーザ１０５（ｎ）の制御下にとどまると
いう点で有効である。しかし、他の実施例では、メール
フィルタ１０９は、ネットワーク１０３内の任意の点に
配置することが可能である。実際、ある実施例は、コレ
スポンデントモデル１１１のみを含むことが可能であ
る。例えば、顧客情報のデータベースはコレスポンデン
トモデル１１１として使用され、メールフィルタ１０９
は、レシピエント記述１２５を顧客情報のデータベース
とともに使用して、新しい製品またはサービスに関する
電子メールをどの顧客が受信すべきかを判断する。
【００１７】［専門家を探索するシステム］実施例で
は、上記の技術は、専門家を探索するシステムを作成す
るために使用される。以下では、まず、このようなシス
テムの効用について説明した後、２つの異なる実施例に
ついて説明する。
【００１８】［コンピュータを使用して情報を発見す
る］基本的に、コンピュータを使用することによって何
かを発見する２つの方法がある。第１の方法は「プログ
ラムに尋ねる」ことであり、第２の方法は、「人に尋ね
る」ことである。
【００１９】第１の方法には、オンラインで記憶されて
いる情報にアクセスするすべての方法が含まれる。これ
には、従来のデータベースプログラム、glimpse（アリ
ゾナ大学のウディ・マンバー(Udi Manber)による）やAp
pleのAppleSearchのようなファイル索引検索プログラ
ム、Hoover（サンドポイント社(SandPoint Corp.)）の
ようなニュースフィルタリングプログラムを使用するこ
と、また、さらに単純には、ファイルを検索し閲覧する
ためにftp、awk、およびテキストエディタのようなツー
ルを使用することが含まれる。
【００２０】第２の方法「人に尋ねる」では、コンピュ
ータは、人の間の通信メディアとして使用される。現
在、主な例は電子メールである。これには、私的な電子
メールおよびメーリングリスト、ならびに掲示板および
ニュースグループの両方が含まれる。コンピュータと電
話がますます統合されることにより、電話もまたコンピ
ュータに基づく通信メディアとしてみることができる。
このような統合の簡単な例は、パーソナルコンピュータ

のは、コンピュータベースのＦＡＸの使用が増大してい
ることである。今日では、ＦＡＸ機能のないモデムを購
入することさえ困難になっており、今までのところ、Ｆ
ＡＸが最も使用されるのは個人間の通信である。
【００２１】情報を取得するいずれの一般的な方法にも
固有の問題点がある。しばしば注意されることである
が、オンライン情報源の世界が拡大するにつれて、「プ
ログラムに尋ねる」方法は、どこを見ればよいかを知る
ことの問題が生じる。例えば、Mosaicシステムは、さま
ざまな通信プロトコルの低レベルの詳細を自動的に処理
することによって、インターネット上の広範な情報にア
クセスする技術的問題の多くを克服している。巨大なハ
イパーメディア空間をブラウズすることは簡単でおもし
ろいことである。しかし、Mosaicを使用して具体的な質
問に対する答えを発見することは、遅くいらいらするも
のであり、失敗することも多い。この問題に対する１つ
の応答は、Information Manifoldプロジェクト（ＡＴ＆
Ｔベル研究所のティ．カーク(T. Kirk)、エイ．レヴィ
(A. Levy)、ディ．スリヴァスタヴァ(D. Srivastava)に
よる）のような、情報の位置に関する知識を含むシステ
ムを設計しようという試みである。しかし、より良い検
索エンジンを構築することのみに基づく解決法では対処
できないさらに深い問題が残る。すなわち、多くの貴重
な情報は、単にオンラインにあるのではなく、人の頭の
中にのみ存在する。さらに、多くの貴重な情報がインタ
ーネットやその他のネットワーク上で公然とアクセス可
能にはならない経済的、社会的、および政治的な理由が
ある。実際、１つの情報の価値の一部は、それが容易に
はアクセス可能でない程度にある。
【００２２】大規模な組織では、特定のトピックについ
て誰が専門家であるかを判断することは重要な問題であ
る。専門家探索の必要性は、私が書いている論文におけ
る組版の問題を解決することを助けるためにLaTeXマク
ロの専門家を見つける必要がある場合のような非公式の
状況から、ビジネスの需要を満たすためのプロジェクト

(Informal Networks: The Company Behind the Char

月））、その一方で、混乱や妨害を引き起こすことなく
より多くの人が連絡をとることを可能にしているためで
ある。
【００３０】［専門家ロケータの実装］専門家ロケータ
の現在好ましい実施例は、米国特許出願第０８／２０
３，１４７号（発明者：コーエン(Coen)他、出願日：１
９９４年２月２８日）に記載されたネットワークエージ
ェントを使用して実装される。この実装において、メー
ルフィルタ１０９は、ユーザの電子メールメッセージを
処理するユーザエージェントの構成要素である。メール
フィルタ１０９は、プログラミング言語Visual Basicで
書かれ、標準的なパーソナルコンピュータ上で実行され
る。対話型ユーザメールインタフェース１１７は、メー
ルフィルタ１０９内の専門家ロケータを、コンピュータ
スクリーン上のウィンドウ内に現れる人間の姿をした
「話し手」としてユーザに提示する。メールフィルタ１
０９を実行するすべてのコンピュータはネットワーク化
され（現在はＴＣＰ／ＩＰを使用する）、相互に、およ
び、任意の人と、電子メールを交換することができる。
また、メールフィルタ１０９は、他のプログラムを呼び
出して、さまざまなサブタスクを実行することも可能で
ある。
【００３１】各メールフィルタ１０９は、データベース
ファイルの２つのセットにアクセスすることができる。
第１のセット（図２）は、コレスポンデントモデル１１
１を実装する。第２のセット（図３）は、ユーザモデル
１１３を実装する。２つのセット内の各データベースフ
ァイルは、メールフィルタ１０９のユーザごとに固有で
あり、当該ユーザによって所有される。注意すべき重要
な点であるが、これらのファイルに、ユーザおよびメー
ルフィルタ１０９以外の者がアクセス可能であることは
仮定していない。
【００３２】コレスポンデントモデル１１１は、以下の
５個のファイルを含む。

ファイルは、電子メールメッセージに現れる各単語に対

２１７と、電子メールファイル２０９内でその単語を含
むメッセージの数のリストとを含む。この種のファイル
は、ジー．ソルトン(G. Salton)、「自動テキスト処理

２１。このファイルは、電子メールファイル２０９内の

ントリは、対応するメッセージのセンダの識別子（ユー
ザ以外の場合）または対応するメッセージのレシピエン
トの識別子（ユーザによって送信された場合）を含む。
【００３７】図３に、ユーザモデルを実装するために使
用されるデータベースファイルを示す。
【００３８】・ユーザ専門リスト３０１は、ユーザ自身
の専門領域を記述するキーワードのリストを含むファイ
ルである。
【００３９】・ユーザファイル逆索引３０５は、ユーザ
のディレクトリ内のテキストファイル内の逆インデック
スを含むファイルである。すなわち、ユーザがコンピュ
ータに格納したファイルに現れるすべての単語に対し
て、このファイルは、その単語を含むファイルの名前の
リストを含む。
【００４０】実施例では、同僚リスト２０１およびユー
ザ専門リスト３０１は、ユーザ１０５（ｎ）との対話で
メールフィルタ１０９によって作成される。逆索引ファ
イル２１３およびユーザファイル逆索引３０５はメール
フィルタ１０９によって自動的に作成される。この種の
以上に大きい逆索引はＧＬＩＭＰＳＥというプログラム
（ユー．マンバー(U. Manber)、エス．ウー(S. Wu)、
「ＧＬＩＭＰＳＥ：ファイルシステム全体を検索するツ
ール(GLIMPSE: A Tool to Search Through Entire File
Systems)」、Usenix Winter 1994 Technical Conferen

３２ページ）によって素早く作成および検索することが
できる。逆リスト３０５を作成する際に、ＧＬＩＭＰＳ
Ｅは、ファイルがテキストファイルであるかどうかを判
断するＵＮＩＸオペレーティングシステム（ＵＮＩＸは
ＸＯＰＥＮの商標である）のユーティリティを使用す
る。さらに、ユーザは、どのディレクトリのファイルあ
るいは個別のファイルを索引付けするかをＧＬＩＭＰＳ
Ｅに対して指定することができる。
【００４１】ユーザは、あるトピックに関する専門家を
探索するプロセスを開始する際には、メールフィルタ１
０９のウィンドウをクリックし、一般的な要求の種類を
記述する句（例えば「I need to locate an expert（私
は専門家を探索することを必要としています）」）をタ
イプする。すると、メールフィルタ１０９は、ユーザ
に、専門領域を記述する句を入力するよう要求する。こ
れがなされると、メールフィルタ１０９は、要求を受け
取るために提案される候補のリストを生成し、承認を求
めて提示する。
【００４２】この候補のリストは、２つのソースからの
名前を組み合わせることによって生成される。第１に、
同僚リスト２０１に現れる名前が追加され、専門家要求
を記述する句に現れる単語が、名前２０５に対応するキ
ーワード２０７のリストに現れるようにする。
【００４３】第２に、以下の計算から生じる名前が追加
される。まず、専門家要求に現れる各単語に対して、メ
ールフィルタ１０９は、電子メール逆索引ファイル２１
３から、その単語を含むメッセージのリスト４０３
（０..ｎ）を検索する。次に、このリストの交わり（共
通部分）を計算し、それぞれ以前のリストに現れるメッ
セージのリスト４０５を生成する。次に、メッセージの
リスト４０５をセンダ／レシピエントリストファイル２
２１と比較し、メッセージのリスト４０５に現れるメッ
セージのうち、センダ／レシピエントリスト２２１の各
人からのメッセージの総数を計算する。その結果は、
「人名」と「メッセージ数」の対からなる名前／メッセ
ージ数対リスト４０７である。最後に、リスト４０７を
「メッセージ数」によってソートする。その後、このリ
スト内で最大のメッセージ数を有する２０個の名前を候
補のリストに追加する。
【００４４】候補のリストがユーザによって承認された
後、メールフィルタ１０９はレシピエント指定子１２１
を作成し、それを電子メールメッセージに追加する。レ
シピエント指定子１２１は、専門家が要求されているこ
とを指定するレシピエント型フィールド１２３を含み、
専門記述４０１がレシピエント記述１２５として使用さ
れる。
【００４５】メッセージはネットワークを通りレシピエ
ントのコンピュータシステムに到達する。各レシピエン
トのメールフィルタ１０９は、専門家が要求されている
ことを指定するレシピエント指定子１２１に注意し、着
信メールストリームからその電子メールメッセージを取
り出し、それを以下のように処理する。
【００４６】まず、メッセージのレシピエント指定子１
２１に含まれる専門記述４０１内の単語を、レシピエン
トのユーザ専門リスト３０１の内容と比較する。その単
語がリスト３０１内に現れた場合、メールフィルタ１０
９は、この要求はこのレシピエントが見ることが適当で
あると仮定する。
【００４７】句中の単語がユーザ専門リスト３０１の内
容と一致しなかった場合、メールフィルタ１０９は、ユ
ーザファイル逆索引ファイル３０５を使用して、当該句
を、ファイル３５内に索引付けされているレシピエント
のすべてのファイルの内容と比較する。この比較は、上
記のプログラムＧＬＩＭＰＳＥを使用して効率的に実行
することができる。一致数があるしきい値より大きい場
合（例えば、一致数が１０より大きい場合）、レシピエ
ントのメールフィルタ１０９は、この要求はこのレシピ
エントに適当である可能性が高いと判断する。
【００４８】こうして、レシピエントのメールフィルタ
は、いずれかのようにしてメッセージが適当であると判
断した場合、ユーザメールインタフェース１１７を使用
して、そのメッセージがレシピエントのコンピュータス
クリーン上に現れるようにする。その後、レシピエント
には、(i)センダに肯定的に応答するか、(ii)センダに
否定的に応答するか、それとも(iii)誰か他の人にその
要求を照会させるかという選択肢が与えられる。最後の
選択肢が選択された場合、レシピエントのメールフィル
タ１０９は、上記のように候補レシピエントのリストを
作成し、プロセスが繰り返される。
【００４９】上記の説明から明らかなように、専門家ロ
ケータのこの実施例は、２段階のコレスポンデントモデ
ル１１１およびユーザモデル１１３を使用することによ
って効率を向上させている。第１段階は、同僚リスト２
０１およびユーザ専門リスト３０１に含まれる専門の明
示的な記述である。第２段階は、逆索引、すなわち、電
子メールファイル２０９への逆索引２１３およびユーザ
テキストファイルへの逆索引３０５である。アルゴリズ
ムはまず専門リスト２０１および３０１を使用し、その

シピエントの私的な情報によることもある。前の例で
は、センダは、レシピエント型フィールド１２３（これ
により、レシピエントのメールフィルタ１０９によって
実行される処理の一般的な種類を示す）と、要求される
専門家の種類を記述するレシピエント記述フィールド１
２５内の単語（これにより、その処理にパラメータを提
供する）とによって、関連性の一般的条件を示した。換
言すれば、センダは、メッセージがフィルタリングされ
る一般的な方法を事前に決定する。注意すべき点である
が、これは、メールフィルタリングに関する従来の技術

シピエントによって完全にフィルタリング（もしあれ
ば）の条件が設定され、センダはフィルタリングに関し
ては完全に「受動的」である。

は、プロのサービスあるいはビジネスに関する１つ以上

は、ＥＹＰＳのソフトウェアおよびディレクトリをユー
ザに配布し、完全にユーザのパーソナルコンピュータ上
で実行することさえも可能である。
【００５５】ＥＹＰＳは１つ以上の可能な番号を与え
る。すると、顧客は、サービスあるいはビジネスについ
て１つ以上の個人的な推薦を得ることを援助するようＥ
ＹＰＳに要求することができる。
【００５６】推薦を得るために、ＥＹＰＳはまず、顧客
の友人または同僚のリストからの人を考察する。（この
リストを得る１つの方法は、単にその顧客に友人、家
族、または同僚を登録するよう要求することによるもの
であるが、このリストを得るためには、例えば顧客が頻
繁に通信する人を追跡するというような、より侵入的で
ない方法もある。）
【００５７】次に、重要な考え方は、ＥＹＰＳは単にリ
ストのすべての人と連絡をとるのではなく、最近数か月
に当該サービスあるいはビジネスを扱った人のみと連絡
をとるということである。この種の「センダ事前フィル
タリング」を行うことが可能な少なくとも２つの方法が
ある。
【００５８】１．ＥＹＰＳは、友人あるいは同僚ごとに
メールフィルタ１０９と連絡をとり、推薦が所望されて
いるサービスの名前および電話番号を示す。所有者の電
話記録やビジネス取引の記録が預けられているメールフ
ィルタ１０９は、所有者がその会社を扱っているかどう
かを判断することができる。扱っている場合、その要求
を所有者に渡す。
【００５９】２．ＥＹＰＳが友人および同僚の電話記録
に直接にアクセスすることが可能な場合（例えば、ＥＹ
ＰＳが長距離ネットワーク自体で実行されるプログラム
によって実装されている場合）、ＥＹＰＳは、電話記録
自体を検査し、その会社に電話をした友人および同僚の
リストを決定することができる。
【００６０】こうして、多数の人を煩わせずに、特定の
サービスあるいはビジネスと最近取引があった人のみと
連絡をとることを保証する注意深いスクリーニングが可
能となる。ＥＹＰＳがこのプロセスを実行することが可
能なさまざまな方法がある。最も侵入的でない方法は、
選択された人々に単に「ＸさんがサービスＹについての
意見または推薦に関心があります。Ｘと連絡をとるか、
または、番号Ｚにメッセージを残してください。この要
求は夜中１２時に満了します。」というメッセージを残
すことである。
【００６１】注意すべき点であるが、この種の「事前
の」メールフィルタリングは、ユーザが人のメールフィ
ルタ１０９に直接メッセージを送ることによっても実行
可能である。メッセージヘッダには「ユーザが最近３か
月のうちに少なくとも２回サービスＸと連絡をとった場
合にはユーザに伝えてください。」という指令が含まれ
る。このメッセージを受信すると、メールフィルタ１０
９は、含まれている指令に基づいてこのメッセージをフ
ィルタリングする。ここでも、従来のメールフィルタリ
ングの形式との差異に注意すべきである。従来、フィル
タリングは完全にレシピエントの制御下にあり、センダ
はフィルタリングプログラムに直接命令を与えない。
【００６２】このようなシステムは自然に多くのプライ
バシーの問題を生じるが、それらは解決可能である。例
えば、推薦を求める人に、誰がアドバイス要求メッセー
ジを取得したかを教える必要はない。そのようにして、
人は、応答する義務があるとは感じないであろう。ま
た、要求者の識別情報は、単にメッセージを「ある友人
がサービスＹについての意見または推薦を求めていま
す。」とすることによって保護することができる。その
場合、ＥＹＰＳは、レシピエントが応答することに同意
した場合にのみ要求者が誰であるかを明らかにすること
になる。
【００６３】［結論］以上の説明により、コンピュータ
およびネットワーク技術の当業者であれば、電子メール
内の非アドレスレシピエント情報とレシピエントのモデ
ルを含むメールフィルタとを使用してレシピエントが受
信するジャンク電子メールの数を減らす方法、および、
非アドレスレシピエント情報とセンダのコレスポンデン
トのモデルを含むメールフィルタとを使用してユーザが
送信する電子メールの数を減らす方法は理解されるであ
ろう。さらに、以上の説明により、上記の技術を使用し
て専門家ロケータを構築する方法、および、専門家ロケ
ータを実装するための、現在発明者が認識している最適
な方法は理解されるであろう。
【００６４】コンピュータおよびネットワーク技術の当
業者には直ちに明らかなように、本発明の原理は、メー
ルフィルタが、電子メールメッセージのレシピエントに
関する非アドレス情報に応答することを可能にする情報
にアクセスすることが可能であるような任意の状況で使
用可能である。さらに、明らかなように、メールフィル
タによって使用されるコレスポンデントおよびレシピエ
ントのモデルを構成するために多くの技術が使用可能で
ある。このモデルは、キーワードの単純なリスト、逆フ
ァイル、データベース、あるいは、メールフィルタがそ
のモデルおよび非アドレス情報からレシピエントがメッ
セージを実際に受信すべきかどうかを判断することがで
きるようなその他の任意のデータの編成とすることが可
能である。さらに、当業者には明らかなように、ネット
ワーク内でのメールフィルタの位置は設計的事項であ
る。レシピエントと同じコンピュータシステムに配置さ
れるフィルタはレシピエント情報にアクセスしやすくは
なるが、センダの近くに配置されるフィルタは、ネット
ワークトラフィックの総量を縮小するにはより効率的で
ある。

【発明の効果】以上述べたごとく、本発明によれば、電
子メール内の非アドレスレシピエント情報とレシピエン
トのモデルを含むメールフィルタとを使用してレシピエ
ントが受信するジャンク電子メールの数を減らし、非ア
ドレスレシピエント情報とセンダのコレスポンデントの
モデルを含むメールフィルタとを使用してユーザが送信
する電子メールの数を減らすことができる。

    指定手段と、 コンピュータシステムに含まれ少なくとも１つのレシピ
    エントに関するレシピエント情報にアクセス可能なコン
    ピュータシステム内にあり、非アドレス情報およびレシ
    ピエント情報に応答して、当該非アドレス情報およびレ
    シピエント情報がともに当該レシピエントが当該メッセ
    ージを受信すべきである場合に、当該メッセージを当該
    レシピエントに提供するメッセージフィルタリング手段
    とからなることを特徴とする、コンピュータシステム内
    に実装されたメールシステムを通じて送信されるメッセ
    ージのレシピエントを自動的に制限する装置。
  2. 【請求項２】 レシピエントに属するファイルを分析し
    てレシピエント情報を取得する手段をさらに有すること
    を特徴とする請求項１の装置。
  3. 【請求項３】 非アドレス情報は専門領域を指定し、 レシピエント情報はレシピエントの専門領域を示すこと
