前記化学式1において、0.9≦a≦1.1、0.5≦x≦0.93、0<y≦0.3、0<z≦0.3、x+y+z=1であり、
Meは、MnまたはAlである。
したがって、前記正極活物質を含む正極を適用した本発明によるリチウム二次電池は、高容量および高安定性を有し、かつ寿命特性を画期的に向上させることができる。

このように、正極活物質が前記コアの結晶構造と異なる1種の結晶構造を含む機能性を含む場合、構造的により安定されるので、電池の充電・放電時に正極活物質の構造がよく維持されることができ、よってサイクル寿命の特性及び安定性に優れることができる。
水酸化リチウム、水酸化ニッケル、水酸化コバルト、アルミニウムヒドロキシドを、Li:Ni:Co:Alが1:0.85:0.13:0.02のモル比となるように混合した。
正極活物質コア表面に立方晶系と六方晶系との混合構造からなる第1層を形成し、第1層の表面に立方晶系構造を含む第2層を形成して第1層および第2層を含む機能性層を形成し、正極活物質の硫黄含有量が200ppmとなるように正極活物質コアと水の混合比を重量比1:1で混合した洗浄工程条件を調節したことを除いては、実施例1と同様の方法で正極活物質を製造した。この時、第1層と第2層の平均厚さ比率は1:4であった。上記正極活物質と混合した溶媒のpHは7.5であった。
水にNaOHを添加してpHが12.5である塩基溶媒(濃度:5重量%)を製造し、正極活物質コアと上記塩基溶媒を1:0.75(約1.33:1)の重量比で混合して洗浄工程を行ったことを除いては、実施例1と同様の方法で正極活物質の硫黄の含有量が400ppmである正極活物質を製造した。
正極活物質コアの表面に立方晶系と六方晶系との混合構造からなる第1層を形成し、第1層の表面に立方晶系構造を含む第2層を形成し、第1層及び第2層を含む機能性層を形成し、正極活物質の硫黄含有量が100ppmとなるように正極活物質コアと水の混合比を1:1.5(約0.67:1)の重量比で混合した洗浄工程条件を調節したことを除いては、実施例1と同様の方法で正極活物質を製造した。この際に、第1層及び第2層の平均厚さの比率は1:4であった。上記正極活物質と混合した溶媒のpHは7.5であった。
水にNaOHを添加してpHが12.5である塩基溶媒(濃度:5重量%)を製造し、正極活物質コアと上記塩基溶媒を1:0.5の重量比で混合して洗浄工程を行ったことを除いては、実施例1と同様の方法で別途の機能性層なしに層状の六方晶系構造からなり、硫黄含有量が1000ppmである正極活物質を製造した。
正極活物質コア表面に立方晶系と六方晶系との混合構造からなる機能性層を形成し、正極活物質の硫黄含有量が500ppmとなるように正極活物質と水を1:0.5の重量比で混合する洗浄工程条件を調節して正極活物質を製造したことを除いては、実施例1と同様の方法で正極活物質を製造した。
正極活物質コア表面に立方晶系と六方晶系との混合構造からなる機能性層を形成し、正極活物質の硫黄含有量が30ppmとなるように正極活物質と水を1:3の重量比で混合する洗浄工程条件を調節して正極活物質を製造したことを除いては、実施例1と同様の方法で正極活物質を製造した。
実施例1〜4および比較例1〜3により製造された半電池を25℃で、3.0V〜4.3V範囲内で1Cで充放電を200回実施して、放電容量を測定した。また、1回放電容量に対する200回放電容量比率を計算して容量維持率を求め、これをサイクル寿命とした。

- 下記の化学式1で表される化合物を含むコアと、
前記コアの表面に位置する機能性層と、
を含み、
前記コア及び前記機能性層は同じ元素から構成され、
前記コアは、六方晶系結晶構造または層状の六方性結晶構造を含み、前記機能性層は、立方晶系構造を含む、リチウム二次電池用正極活物質であって、
前記リチウム二次電池用正極活物質は100ppm〜400ppm範囲の硫黄を含むリチウム二次電池用正極活物質。

- 前記機能性層の平均厚さは3nm〜60nmである、請求項1に記載のリチウム二次電池用正極活物質。
- 前記機能性層は、前記コアの結晶構造と異なる1種の結晶構造のみを含む層を含むものである、請求項1に記載のリチウム二次電池用正極活物質。
- 前記機能性層は、
前記立方晶系構造及び少なくとも1種の結晶構造を含む第1層と、前記立方晶系構造を含む第2層とを含む、請求項1に記載のリチウム二次電池用正極活物質。 - 前記第1層の平均厚さは、
前記機能性層の平均厚さを基準に、2%〜20%範囲である、請求項5に記載のリチウム二次電池用正極活物質。 - 前記第1層は前記コア表面に位置し、
前記第2層は前記第1層の表面に位置する、請求項5に記載のリチウム二次電池用正極活物質。 - 前記第1層は、立方晶系構造と六方晶系構造とが混合された構造を含む、請求項5に記載のリチウム二次電池用正極活物質。
- 前記化学式1において、xは下記式1の範囲を満足する、請求項1に記載のリチウム二次電池用正極活物質。
