Description
<実施例1>
図1は本発明の実施例1に係る液晶表示装置の一サブ画素分の構成を示す正面図である。図2は、図1に示すI−I線に沿った断面図である。図2には、アクティブ素子であるTFT(Thin Film Transistor)を用いた回路を含んだTFT基板と、液晶層と、TFT基板に対向する対向基板とを示している。図1及び図2に示す実施例1を以下詳細に説明する。
実施例1では、コンタクトホールを開ける工程が2回あり、また、絶縁膜を形成する工程が3回存在する。実施例2では、コンタクトホールを開ける工程が1回であり、また、絶縁膜を形成する工程が2回であることを特徴としている。
実施例1及び実施例2では、第2電極29及び第3電極30を同じ工程で、同一の絶縁膜上に配置させている。実施例3では、第2電極29を配置させるまでは、実施例1及び実施例2のどちらの工程でも良く、その後、第2電極29を配置させたあと、第4の絶縁膜45を形成し、第4のコンタクトホール46を開口した後に第3電極30を配置させることを特徴としている。
実施例4では、TFT基板のサブ画素領域内において、第1電極26並びに第2電極29及び電極29aで形成される蓄積容量と、第1電極26並びに第3電極30及び電極30aで形成される蓄積容量とが略同一であることを特徴としている。更に望ましくは、第1アクティブ素子23に寄生する容量と第2アクティブ素子24に寄生する容量とも略同一である。
実施例5では、サブ画素領域内で第2電極29及び第3電極30の延在方向が二つ存在する、所謂マルチドメイン構造であることを特徴としている。図21及び図22は、本発明の実施例5に係る液晶表示装置の一サブ画素分の構成を示す正面図である。図21は、実施例1と同様の構成において、液晶配向方位39を走査線に直交する方向とし、第2電極29、第3電極30及びデータ線12の延在方向が走査線に直交する方向に対して±7°となるように、サブ画素領域を屈曲させた構成例を示す。また、図22は、実施例2と同様の構成において、液晶配向方位39を走査線の延在方向と同じ方向とし、第2電極29及び第3電極30の延在方向が走査線に対して±7°となるように、第2電極29及び第3電極30を配置させた構成例を示す。なお、実施例5に係る液晶表示装置は、実施例3と同様に、第4の絶縁膜45を備え、第3のコンタクトホール32の代わりに第4のコンタクトホール46を備えた形態であってもよい。

Claims (11)
- 一対の基板と、
前記一対の基板の間に挟持される液晶とを有し、
前記一対の基板の一方の基板上には、
複数の走査線と、
前記走査線と交差するように配置された複数のデータ線と、
前記走査線及び前記データ線で区分けされたマトリクス状に配置された複数のサブ画素の夫々に対応して開口している領域に配置された透明で平面状の第1電極と、
前記液晶に向かって前記第1電極上に絶縁膜を介し正面視で交互に配置された少なくとも一つの第2電極及び少なくとも一つの第3電極とを含む液晶表示装置であって、
前記第2電極と前記第3電極とが独立に駆動され、
前記第2電極と前記第1電極との間、及び前記第3電極と前記第1電極との間に、個別に前記液晶を駆動するための電圧が印加され、
前記サブ画素での階調の変化に対して、前記第2電極及び前記第3電極に与えられる電位は互いに異なる変化をし、前記サブ画素での階調が最小の階調から特定の階調までである場合に、階調の変化に応じて変化する電位が前記第2電極に与えられ、前記サブ画素での階調が前記特定の階調から最大の階調までである場合に、階調の変化に応じて変化する電位が前記第3電極に与えられることを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 前記サブ画素の領域には、二本の走査線が含まれており、該二本の走査線の各々にアクティブ素子が設けられ、前記第2電極及び前記第3電極は前記アクティブ素子によりそれぞれ駆動されることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記サブ画素の領域内にある前記アクティブ素子の各々に寄生する容量が略同じであることを特徴とする請求項2に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記第1電極には、基準電位が与えられ、
前記第2電極には、前記サブ画素での階調が最小の階調から特定の階調までである場合に階調駆動されるための電位が与えられ、
前記第3電極には、前記サブ画素での階調が最小の階調から前記特定の階調までである場合に前記基準電位が与えられ、階調が前記特定の階調より一つ大きい階調から最大の階調までである場合に階調駆動されるための電位が与えられることを特徴とする請求項1から3のいずれか一に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 前記第1電極には、基準電位が与えられ、
前記第2電極には、前記サブ画素での階調が最小の階調から特定の階調までである場合に階調駆動されるための電位が与えられ、
前記第3電極には、階調が最小の階調から前記特定の階調より一つ小さい階調までである場合に前記基準電位が与えられ、階調が前記特定の階調から最大の階調までである場合に階調駆動されるための電位が与えられることを特徴とする請求項1から3のいずれか一に記載の液晶表示装置。 - 階調が前記特定の階調から前記最大の階調までである場合に前記第2電極に与えられる電位は一定であることを特徴とする請求項4又は5に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 階調が前記特定の階調から前記最大の階調までである場合に前記第2電極に与えられる電位は、階調が前記最大の階調である場合に前記第3電極に与えられる電位と同じであることを特徴とする請求項6に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記特定の階調より一つ大きい階調での前記液晶の光の透過率が、前記特定の階調での前記透過率よりも大きくなるように、前記第3電極に階調駆動されるための電位が与えられることを特徴とする請求項4から7のいずれか一に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記第1電極及び前記第2電極で形成する蓄積容量と、前記第1電極及び前記第3電極で形成する蓄積容量とが略同じであることを特徴とする請求項1から8のいずれか一に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記第2電極及び前記第3電極は同一の絶縁膜上に設けられていることを特徴とする請求項1から9のいずれか一に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記第2電極と前記第3電極とは異なる絶縁膜上に設けられていることを特徴とする請求項1から9のいずれか一に記載の液晶表示装置。
