(b)電界しきい値より大きくかつ上記第1のタイプの粒子と同じ極性を有する電界を上記共通電極及び1つの画素電極の間に印加することで、上記画素電極に対応する領域において上記第1の光学的特性を上記第1の面に表示させるように、又は、
(c)上記第1の光学的特性が上記第1の面に表示されたとき、電界しきい値以下でありかつ上記第3のタイプの粒子と同じ極性を有する電界を上記共通電極及び1つの画素電極の間に印加することで、上記画素電極に対応する領域において上記第3の光学的特性を上記第1の面に表示させるように、
上記電界しきい値を有する。
(a)上記第1のタイプの粒子及び上記第2のタイプの粒子は、逆極性の電荷を有し、
(b)上記第3のタイプの粒子は、上記第1又は第2のタイプの粒子と同じ極性であるがより低い強度の電荷を有し、
(c)上記第3のタイプの顔料粒子と同じ極性の電荷を有する上記第1又は第2のタイプの粒子は、しきい値電圧を有し、
(d)上記第4のタイプの粒子は実質的に帯電していない中性浮力粒子である。
Claims (14)
- 共通電極と画素電極の層との間に挟まれた電気泳動流体を備え、見る側における第1の面と、上記見る側の逆側における第2の面とを有するディスプレイ層であって、
上記電気泳動流体は、第1のタイプの粒子、第2のタイプの粒子、第3のタイプの粒子、及び実質的に帯電していない中性浮力粒子である第4のタイプの粒子を含み、これらのすべては1つの溶媒又は溶媒の混合物に分散され、
上記第1、第2、及び第3のタイプの粒子は、互いに異なる第1、第2、及び第3の光学的特性をそれぞれ有し、
上記第1のタイプの粒子は1つの極性の電荷を有し、上記第2及び第3のタイプの粒子は逆極性の電荷を有し、
上記第2のタイプの粒子は、
(a)上記第2のタイプの粒子と同じ極性を有する電位差を上記共通電極及び1つの画素電極の間に印加して所定の電界しきい値より強い電界を生成することで、上記画素電極に対応する領域において上記第2の光学的特性を上記第1の面に表示させるように、又は、
(b)上記第1のタイプの粒子と同じ極性を有する電位差を上記共通電極及び1つの画素電極の間に印加して所定の電界しきい値より強い電界を生成することで、上記画素電極に対応する領域において上記第1の光学的特性を上記第1の面に表示させるように、又は、
(c)上記第1の光学的特性が上記第1の面に表示されたとき、上記第3のタイプの粒子と同じ極性を有する電位差を上記共通電極及び1つの画素電極の間に印加して所定の電界しきい値と同じ又はより弱い電界を生成することで、上記画素電極に対応する領域において上記第3の光学的特性を上記第1の面に表示させるように、
上記電界しきい値を有し、
上記電気泳動流体における上記実質的に帯電していない中性浮力粒子の濃度は、体積で0.1〜10%の範囲にあるディスプレイ層。 - 上記第1のタイプの粒子及び上記第2のタイプの粒子はそれぞれ白色及び黒色である請求項1記載の層。
- 上記第3のタイプの粒子は白色及び黒色ではない請求項1記載の層。
- 上記光学的特性は色状態である請求項1記載の層。
- 上記実質的に帯電していない中性浮力粒子は、ポリアクリレート、ポリメタクリレート、ポリスチレン、ポリアニリン、ポリピロール、ポリフェノール、及びポリシロキサンからなるグループから選択された1つの材料から形成される請求項1記載の層。
- 上記実質的に帯電していない中性浮力粒子は、ポリ(ペンタブロモフェニルメタクリル酸塩)、ポリ(2−ビニルナフタレン)、ポリ(ナフチルメタクリル酸塩)、ポリ(アルファ−メチルスチレン)、ポリ(Nベンジルメタクリルアミド)、及びポリ(ベンジルメタクリル酸塩)からなるグループから選択された1つの材料から形成される請求項1記載の層。
- 上記電気泳動流体における上記実質的に帯電していない中性浮力粒子の濃度は、体積で0.1〜5%の範囲にある請求項1記載の層。
- 上記第1のタイプの粒子の色、上記第2のタイプの粒子の色、及び上記第3のタイプの粒子の色を表示するが、上記第4のタイプの粒子の色を表示しない請求項1記載の層。
- 第1のタイプの粒子、第2のタイプの粒子、第3のタイプの粒子、及び第4のタイプの粒子を含み、これらのすべては1つの溶媒又は溶媒の混合物に分散されている電気泳動流体であって、
(a)上記第1のタイプの粒子及び上記第2のタイプの粒子は、逆極性の電荷を有し、
(b)上記第3のタイプの粒子は、上記第1又は第2のタイプの粒子と同じ極性であるがより低い強度の電荷を有し、
(c)上記第1及び第2のタイプの粒子のうちで上記第3のタイプの顔料粒子と同じ極性の電荷を有する粒子は、しきい値電圧を有し、
(d)上記第4のタイプの粒子は実質的に帯電していない中性浮力粒子であり、
上記電気泳動流体における上記実質的に帯電していない中性浮力粒子の濃度は、体積で0.1〜10%の範囲にある電気泳動流体。 - 上記第1のタイプの粒子及び上記第2のタイプの粒子はそれぞれ白色及び黒色である請求項9記載の流体。
- 上記第3のタイプの粒子は白色及び黒色ではない請求項9記載の流体。
- 上記実質的に帯電していない中性浮力粒子は、ポリアクリレート、ポリメタクリレート、ポリスチレン、ポリアニリン、ポリピロール、ポリフェノール、及びポリシロキサンからなるグループから選択された1つの材料から形成される請求項9記載の流体。
- 上記実質的に帯電していない中性浮力粒子は、ポリ(ペンタブロモフェニルメタクリル酸塩)、ポリ(2−ビニルナフタレン)、ポリ(ナフチルメタクリル酸塩)、ポリ(アルファ−メチルスチレン)、ポリ(Nベンジルメタクリルアミド)、及びポリ(ベンジルメタクリル酸塩)からなるグループから選択された1つの材料から形成される請求項9記載の流体。
- 上記電気泳動流体における上記実質的に帯電していない中性浮力粒子の濃度は、体積で0.1〜5%の範囲にある請求項9記載の流体。
