Description
本出願は、開示内容の全体を参照することにより組み込まれている、2008年3月31日出願の米国特許仮出願第61/040910号のメリットを主張する。
本発明は、概ね、多層光学フィルムと、特に視覚ディスプレイシステム用のバックライトにおける使用に好適な偏光子として構成されるこのようなフィルムへの適用に関する。

Claims (2)
- それぞれx軸とy軸とに対応するブロック軸と通過軸とを有する反射型偏光子であって、
空気に露出され、それ故ブリュースター角反射極小を呈する第1及び第2の相対する主表面であって、両主表面はx軸とy軸とにそれ自身垂直であるz軸に垂直に配置され、z軸とy軸とはy−z面を形成する、第1及び第2の相対する主表面と、
両主表面間に配置され、それぞれΔnx、Δny、及びΔnzのx軸、y軸、及びz軸に沿った屈折率差を呈する隣接ミクロ層の複数の対に配列されたミクロ層の積層体であって、Δnx>Δny>0>Δnzであり、該積層体は総数Nのミクロ層を有する、ミクロ層の積層体と、
を具備し、
数Nと屈折率差Δnxは、偏光子がx軸に沿って偏光した法線入射光に対して高い反射率を有するように選択され、前記高い反射率はRblocknormalと呼称され、Rblocknormalは少なくとも80%であり、
数Nと屈折率差Δnyは、偏光子がy軸に沿って偏光した法線入射光に対して低い反射率を有するように選択され、前記低い反射率はRpassnormalと呼称され、Rpassnormalは25%以下であり、
数Nと屈折率差Δnyは、該反射型偏光子が両主表面のうちの第1の主表面の該ブリュースター角度においてy−z面中で入射するp偏光に対してRpassnormalよりも大きい反射率を呈するように選択され、
Rpassincは、総数N及び屈折率差Δnyのミクロ層の積層体と、総数N及びy軸に沿った屈折率差0のミクロ層の積層体との間のRpassnormalにおける差であり、
Rblockincは、総数N及び屈折率差Δnxを有するミクロ層の積層体と、総数N及びy軸に沿った屈折率差Δnx−Δnyを有するミクロ層の積層体との間のRblocknormalにおける差であり、
数NはRblockincがRpassincの少なくとも半分であるように選択され、
Rpassnormal、Rpassinc、Rblocknormal、及びRblockincは全て同じ波長範囲にわたっての平均である、
反射型偏光子。 - それぞれx軸とy軸とに対応するブロック軸と通過軸とを有する反射型偏光子の製造方法であって、
第1及び第2のポリマー材料を選択する工程と、
両ポリマー材料を共押し出しして空気に露出された相対する主表面を有するポリマーフィルムを提供する工程であって、両主表面はx軸とy軸とにそれ自身垂直であるz軸に垂直に配置され、z軸とy軸とはy−z面を形成し、該ポリマーフィルムは両主表面間に配置された層の積層体を含み、該積層体は総数Nの前記層を有し、複数の該層は該第2のポリマー材料の層と交互配置された該第1のポリマー材料の層を含む、工程と、
該ポリマーフィルムを配向して層の該積層体をミクロ層の積層体に転換する工程であって、該積層体におけるミクロ層は総数Nを有しΔnx>Δny>0>ΔnzのようにそれぞれΔnx、Δny、及びΔnzのx軸、y軸、及びz軸に沿った屈折率差を呈する隣接ミクロ層の複数の対に配列される、工程と、
偏光子がx軸に沿って偏光した法線入射光に対して高い反射率を有するように、数Nと屈折率差Δnxを選択する工程であって、前記高い反射率はRblocknormalと呼称され、Rblocknormalは少なくとも80%である、工程と、
偏光子がy軸に沿って偏光した法線入射光に対して低い反射率を有するように、数Nと屈折率差Δnyを選択する工程であって、前記低い反射率はRpassnormalと呼称され、Rpassnormalは25%以下である、工程と、
該反射型偏光子が両主表面のうちの第1の主表面のブリュースター角度においてy−z面中で入射するp偏光に対してRpassnormalよりも大きい反射率を呈するように、数Nと屈折率差Δnyを選択する工程と、
RblockincがRpassincの少なくとも半分であるように数Nを選択する工程であって、
Rpassincは、総数N及び屈折率差Δnyのミクロ層の積層体と、総数N及びy軸に沿った屈折率差0のミクロ層の積層体との間のRpassnormalにおける差であり、
Rblockincは、総数N及び屈折率差Δnxを有するミクロ層の積層体と、総数N及びy軸に沿った屈折率差Δnx−Δnyを有するミクロ層の積層体との間のRblocknormalにおける差であり、
Rpassnormal、Rpassinc、Rblocknormal、及びRblockincは全て同じ波長範囲にわたっての平均である、工程と、
を具備する方法。
