UHMW PEの溶液を、ソネボーン社(Sonneborn, Inc.)より入手可能であるHYDROBRITE(登録商標)55O PO 白色鉱油中、10重量%の濃度で調製した。この白色鉱油は、25℃の温度にてASTM D4052によって測定した約0.860g/cm3から約0.880g/cm3の密度、および40℃の温度にてASTM D455によって測定した約100cSTから約125cStの動粘度を有していた。この白色鉱油はまた、ASTM D3238により、約67.5%のパラフィン性炭素から約72.0%のパラフィン性炭素、および約28.0%から約32.5%のナフテン性炭素より構成されていた。この白色鉱油は、ASTM D1160によって測定した約298℃の10mmHgにおける2.5%蒸留温度を有しており、また、ASTM D2502によって測定した約541の平均分子量も有していた。
キャピラリー壁における見かけのせん断速度は、以下のようにして算出することができる:

ポリマー溶液が、レオメーターのバレルからダイへ流動するに従って、流線は集束する。そのような流場は、単純なせん断流に重ね合わされた伸張変形として解釈することができる。Cogswellは、伸張レオロジー(extensional rheology)を測定する方法として、これらの成分を別々に扱うことができる方法を示した(F.N. Cogswell, Trans. Soc. Rheology, 16(3), 383-403 (1972))。
本発明の目的のために、コグスウェル伸張粘度は、伸張速度1秒−1における値として定義することができる。

後延伸操作は、部分配向糸(POY)を、強制対流式オーブン中で延伸することを含んでよく、好ましくは、後延伸操作での部分配向糸の延伸は、空気中で行ってよい。後延伸操作は、例えば、各々のそのすべての内容が参照により本明細書に組み込まれる米国特許第6,969,553号、米国特許第7,370,395号、または米国特許出願番号第2005/0093200号に記載の条件を含んでよい。

ゲル紡糸プロセスは、高配向糸(HOY)製品を張力下で冷却して、作製された冷却高配向糸(HOY)製品を形成し、この作製された冷却高配向糸(HOY)製品を巻き取る最終工程を含んでよい。作製された高配向糸(HOY)製品は、約45g/d(40.5g/dtex)超の引張強度を有してよく、例えば、約45g/d(40.5g/dtex)から約90g/d(63g/dtex)、または約90g/d(63g/dtex)超を含む。加えて、作製された高配向糸(HOY)製品は、約1400g/d超の弾性率を有してよく、約2000g/dまで、または約2000g/d超を含む。さらに、少なくともいくつかの例では、作製された高配向糸(HOY)製品は、この糸が作られたUHMW PEポリマーの固有粘度の約0.2倍から、この糸が作られたUHMW PEポリマーの固有粘度の約0.65倍までである固有粘度を有してよい。例えば、UHMW PEの固有粘度が、30dl/gである場合、それから作製された高配向糸(HOY)製品は、約6dl/gから約19.5dl/gであってよい。
引張強度が高められた高配向糸(HOY)の作製は、部分的に、後延伸の延伸比および延伸プロファイルの関数であることが見出された。例えば、よりゆっくりである後延伸延伸比では、一般的に、引張強度のより高い高配向糸(HOY)を作製することができる。固有粘度33dl/gを有するUHMW PEポリマー、および押出機温度240℃を用い、上述のプロセスに従って作製した固有粘度18.5dl/gを有する部分配向糸(POY)のサンプルを、各々、後延伸プロセスで延伸した。後延伸プロセスは、150℃または152℃のいずれかの温度の加熱装置を通る、単一パス(Std)または複数パス(MP)のいずれかを有していた。単一パス運転における部分配向糸(POY)の最大延伸比は、単一パス(Std)運転の場合約3.0から約3.9であり、高い延伸比は、糸切れを起こす結果となった。複数パス(MP)運転の場合、最大延伸比は約4.5から約6.0と決定された。
紡糸溶媒および固有粘度約60dl/gであるUHMW PEポリマーを含む溶液を、押出機温度280℃、および290℃に加熱された容器により形成する。押出機に投入されるスラリー中のポリマー濃度は、約6%であり、スラリーの温度は約100℃である。押出機および加熱された容器により均質紡糸溶液を形成した後、この溶液を、181孔、紡糸口金径0.35mm、およびL/D 30:1の紡糸口金を通して紡糸する。紡糸口金と急冷水浴との間には、0.75インチのエアギャップが存在する。溶液糸は、この0.75インチ(1.9cm)エアギャップ中、約2:1の延伸比で延伸され、次に、約10℃の水温である水浴で急冷される。このゲル糸は、ロールセットにより、3:1の延伸比で冷延伸され、その後、溶媒除去装置へ投入される。溶媒除去装置では、ゲル繊維は、約2:1の延伸比で延伸される。得られた乾燥糸は、4セットのロールセットにより、3つのステージにて延伸され、引張強度が約40g/dである部分配向糸(POY)が形成される。部分配向糸(POY)は、25メートルオーブン中、5パスにより152℃で延伸される。部分配向糸(POY)のフィードスピードは、延伸の滞留時間が、約10:1超の最大延伸比を達成するように調節される。高配向糸(HOY)製品は、引張強度が約90g/dであり、弾性率は約2000g/dである。
ソフトまたはハードアーマーなどの防弾用物品を、ゲルスパン糸から作製することができる。この例では、ソフトアーマーおよびハードアーマー複合体パネルを、ゲルスパンUHMW PE糸から構築した。コントロールサンプルに用いた糸は、37.5g/dの引張強度および1350g/dの弾性率を有していた。試験サンプルに用いた糸は、本明細書で述べるプロセスに従って作製されたものであり、45g/dの引張強度および1450g/dの弾性率を有していた。試験サンプルおよびコントロールサンプルは、同じ繊維体積分率および同じマトリックス樹脂で構築した。構造の防御力は、投射物の50%が阻止される衝撃速度を挙げることで表すことができ、1秒あたりのフィートで表されるV50値と称される。複合体パネルのV50値は、様々な種類の弾丸で試験し、試験結果を下記の表1に示す。
Claims (10)
- 超高分子量ポリエチレン(UHMW PE)から作られるゲルスパン糸を作製するための方法であって、
UHMW PEおよび紡糸溶媒を含むスラリーを押出機に供給して液体混合物を作製する工程、ここで、前記UHMW PEは、少なくとも30dl/gのデカリン中135℃での固有粘度(IV)を有する;
前記液体混合物を加熱した容器に通して、前記UHMW PEおよび前記紡糸溶媒を含む均質溶液を形成する工程;
前記溶液を、前記加熱した容器から紡糸口金へ提供して、溶液糸を形成する工程;
前記紡糸口金から放出される前記溶液糸を、1.1:1から30:1の延伸比で延伸して、延伸溶液糸を形成する工程;
前記延伸溶液糸を、前記UHMW PEポリマーのゲル点未満の温度まで冷却して、ゲル糸を形成する工程;
1.1:1から30:1の第一の延伸比DR1にて、前記ゲル糸を1つ以上のステージで延伸する工程;
前記ゲル糸を、第二の延伸比DR2にて延伸する工程;
溶媒除去装置中にて前記ゲル糸から紡糸溶媒を除去して、乾燥糸を形成する工程;
前記乾燥糸を、第三の延伸比DR3にて少なくとも1つのステージで延伸して、19dl/g超の固有粘度を有する部分配向糸を形成する工程;
前記部分配向糸を、後延伸操作へ移す工程;及び
前記部分配向糸を、後延伸操作において、1.8:1から15:1の第四の延伸比DR4まで、後延伸温度にて延伸して、45g/d(40.5g/dtex)超の引張強度および1400g/d超の弾性率を有する高配向糸製品を形成する工程、
を含む、方法。 - 前記部分配向糸が、連続するインラインプロセスで作製され、前記後延伸操作が、前記インラインプロセスから分離された非連続工程である、請求項1に記載のゲルスパン糸を作製するための方法。
- 前記UHMW PEが、100ミクロンから約200ミクロンの平均粒子サイズを有し、前記粒子の約90%が、前記平均粒子サイズの40ミクロン以内である粒子サイズを有する、請求項1に記載のゲルスパン糸を作製するための方法。
- 前記UHMW PEが、30dl/g超の固有粘度を有する、請求項3に記載のゲルスパン糸を作製するための方法。
- 前記溶液が、前記溶液に対して6重量%から10重量%の量で前記UHMW PEを含む、請求項1に記載のゲルスパン糸を作製するための方法。
- 250℃での鉱油中に溶解した前記UHMW PEの10重量%溶液が、以下の式:

に従うコグスウェル伸長粘度(λ)を有する、請求項1に記載のゲルスパン糸を作製するための方法。 - 前記部分配向糸(POY)が、12g/d(10.8g/dtex)から25g/d(22.5g/dtex)の引張強度を有し、前記乾燥糸が約0.75から約0.95の部分後延伸比で延伸される、請求項1に記載のゲルスパン糸を作製するための方法。
- 前記後延伸方法の延伸の前記延伸比が、前記部分配向糸が前記後延伸温度である時点では一定である、請求項1に記載のゲルスパン糸を作製するための方法。
- 後延伸方法の延伸プロファイルが、前記部分配向糸が前記後延伸温度である時点では直線である、請求項1に記載のゲルスパン糸を作製するための方法。
- 複数のゲルスパン超高分子量ポリエチレン糸を含む防弾用物品であって、該糸が19dl/g超の固有粘度、45g/d(40.5g/dtex)超の引張強度、及び1400g/d超の弾性率を有する、防弾用物品。
