Description
垂直磁気記録媒体は、主に硬質磁性材料の磁気記録層と、磁気記録層を目的の方向に配向させるためのシード層、磁気記録層の表面を保護する保護層、および磁気記録層への記録に用いられる磁気ヘッドが発生する磁束を集中させる役割を担う軟磁性材料の裏打ち層から構成される。
また、垂直磁気記録媒体には、基板と磁気記録層との間に軟磁性材料からなる軟磁性裏打ち層が配設される。これにより、軟磁性裏打ち層は、磁気ヘッドから発生される磁界を急峻に引き込むため、磁界勾配が小さくなり、信号の書き広がりの影響も低減される。
図1は、本発明の垂直磁気記録媒体を示す断面図である。前記垂直磁気記録媒体は、非磁性基板101上に、軟磁性裏打ち層102、シード層103、第1非磁性中間層104、第2非磁性中間層105、グラニュラー磁気記録層106、交換結合力制御層107、非グラニュラー磁気記録層108、保護層109、および潤滑層110をこの順に備えている。
(比較例1)
シード層103を、Ni25Cr5Moターゲットを用いて形成したことを除いて、実施例1と同様にして比較例1の垂直磁気記録媒体を作製した。
(比較例2)
シード層103を、Ni30Fe5Cr5Mo3Tiターゲットを用いて形成したことを除いて、実施例1と同様にして比較例2の垂直磁気記録媒体を作製した。
(比較例3)
シード層103を、Ni5Fe5Cr15Mo3Tiターゲットを用いて形成したことを除いて、実施例1と同様にして比較例3の垂直磁気記録媒体を作製した。
(比較例4)
第1非磁性中間層を形成しないこと以外は、実施例1と同様にして比較例4の垂直磁気記録媒体を作製した。
〔評価項目〕
実施例1〜5および比較例1〜4の各垂直磁気記録媒体について、垂直磁気記録媒体のS/N比とO/W(オーバーライト特性)、前記磁気記録層106の配向分散Δθ50と、結晶粒径およびシード層103の飽和磁化(Ms)について評価した。
また、前記磁気記録層106の配向分散Δθ50は、X線回折装置でθ−2θの測定を行ない、非磁性基板101に対して平行な磁気記録層106のhcp(0002)面のピークトップから2θ値を測定し、2θを固定してθスキャンを行なった場合のピークの半値幅として算出した。この配向分散Δθ50は、磁化容易軸の分散を示す指標であり、この値は小さいほど好ましい。磁気記録層106の配向分散Δθ50に関する評価結果を表1に併記する。
前記シード層103の磁化測定は、別途シード層のみを20nm形成した試料にてVSM(Vibrating Sample Magnetometer)により計測を行なった。飽和磁化測定の評価結果を表1に併記する。

Claims (4)
- 非磁性基板上に、軟磁性裏打ち層、シード層、第1非磁性中間層、第2非磁性中間層、グラニュラー磁気記録層、交換結合力制御層、非グラニュラー磁気記録層、保護膜、および潤滑層を順次積層してなる垂直磁気記録媒体であって、前記シード層が、必須成分としてNiFeCrMoを備え、Co、Si、Tiから選択される少なくとも1種類を含み、fcc構造を有する材料で構成され、前記第1非磁性中間層が、CoCrMoもしくはCoCrMoRuを含む合金で構成され、第2非磁性中間層が、RuもしくはRuWを含む合金で構成され、
前記シード層は、Cr濃度が3〜20at%であり、Fe濃度が3〜10at%であり、Mo濃度が2〜8at%であることを特徴とする垂直磁気記録媒体。 - 前記シード層の膜厚が、2〜10nmであることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の垂直磁気記録媒体。
- 前記シード層の飽和磁化が0〜300emu/ccであることを特徴とする請求項1ないし請求項2のいずれかに記載の垂直磁気記録媒体。
- 前記第1非磁性中間層と第2非磁性中間層を含めた膜厚が10〜30nmである事を特徴とする請求項1〜3のいずれかに記載の垂直磁気記録媒体。
