Description
本願は、2008年8月19日に出願された米国仮出願第61/090,191号、2009年に1月16日に出願された同61/145,515号及び2009年6月4日に出願された61/184,197号に対して優先権を主張する。
第1の態様では、本発明は、重合体マトリックスと、該重合体中に分散された希土類金属ナノクラスターと、該希土類金属ナノクラスターの外側に配置されたアンテナ配位子とを含む組成物であって、該希土類金属ナノクラスターが1〜100nmのサイズ範囲内にあり、かつ、酸素原子又は硫黄原子を介して少なくとも1個の半金属又は遷移金属に結合したランタニド原子を含む組成物を提供する。
粒度及び粒度分布は、光学顕微鏡及び/又は電子顕微鏡で測定できる。マトリックス中における粒度分布は、組成物の断面から光学顕微鏡及び/又は電子顕微鏡で測定できる。粒度は、観察された最も長い粒子軸に沿って測定される。粒度分布は、容積百分率に基づく。好ましくは、発光組成物中において、RE−Mナノクラスターの95容積%よりも多くが1〜1000nmのサイズ範囲内である。より好ましくは、RE−Mナノクラスターの少なくとも50容積%が1〜10nmのサイズ範囲内である;より好ましくはRE−Mナノクラスターの少なくとも80容積%が1〜10nmのサイズ範囲内である;最も好ましくは、RE−Mナノクラスターの少なくとも90容積%が1〜10nmのサイズ範囲内である。好ましい実施形態では、RE−Mナノクラスターは本質的に球形である(1.2以下のアスペクト比を有する)。
蛍光体−重合体複合材の発光透明部材は、RE−Mナノクラスターがドープされた有機/無機ナノ複合材料から作られ、その際、金属原子を含有する配位子分子は、酸素及び硫黄などの無機元素を介してREイオンに共有結合している。このRE−Mナノクラスターは、金属アルコキシドの一部分として有機基を含有することができる。この点で、当該RE−Mナノクラスターは、RE含有有機錯体や従来LSC及びSC用の発光体として使用されてきた無機蛍光体のいずれとも著しく相違する。
エチレンとノルボルネンとの共重合体(又は他の環状オレフィン共重合体COC)は、それらのユニークな光学的特性、機械的性質及び処理特性の組合せのため、非常に興味深い非晶質熱可塑性物質である。COCは、300nmを超える波長では光に対して透明であり、かつ、複屈折が低い。そのガラス転移温度(Tg)は、ノルボルネン含有量を増加させることにより80℃〜170℃にまで容易に変化する。これらは、吸収性が非常に低く(0.01%未満)、かつ、酸、塩基及び極性有機溶媒に対する抵抗性が非常に高い。これらは、非極性溶媒を使用する溶解処理方法によって、また射出成形及び押出などの溶融処理方法によっても容易に処理加工できる。COCは、Ticona社によりTopas(商標)という商品名で市販されている。現在のところ、Topasは、ポリカーボネート及びポリメタクリル酸メチルのような材料の代替物として使用されているだけでなく、生物医学用途や包装用途でも使用されている。
RE−Mナノクラスター変性環状オレフィン共重合体の合成には、2つの一般的な方法を用いることができる。一方の方法は、RE変性単量体を製造し、そして共重合に導入することであろう。他方の選択肢は、重合体変性反応を実施することであろう。一般的な合成スキームを図4に示している。RE−Mナノクラスターをノルボルネン配位子で変性して単官能性単量体を生じさせる。次いで、この単量体を、メタロセン触媒系を使用してエチレンと共重合させる。
複合フィルムを作製する2つの技術が実証されている。第1の技術では、膜形成前にアンテナ配位子(例えばMK)とRE−Mナノクラスターとを混合させることができる。見込まれる不都合な点は、RE−Mナノクラスターを、該混合物中にある光開始剤のUV活性化により形成された架橋マトリックスに分散させることが望ましい場合があることである。これにより、MKなどのアンテナ配位子の分解が生じてしまう場合がある。さらに、アンテナ配位子の強力な吸収が光開始剤のUV活性化を阻害してしまう場合もある。そのため、本発明者は、MKを、ポリメタクリレート(PMMA)マトリックス中にある予め形成されたMPの架橋フィルムに添加する追加技術を実証した。
ミヒラーケトン(MK)/RE−Mナノクラスター比の増感への依存性
MK/Eu−Alナノクラスターのモル比を以下のとおりに変更した;0.5、1、2及び3。
MK/Eu−Alをドープしたメタクリル酸メチル(MMA)をシリカ(SiO2)基材上に塗布した。そのフィルム厚は約400Åであった。430nmの波長の単色光により励起することによって光ルミネセンススペクトルを得た。結果(図6参照)から、光ルミネッセンス強度は、MK/Eu−Alナノクラスター比が約2であるときに最大になることが明らかになった;強度は3<0.5<1<2の順に増加する。3の比では、光ルミネッセンス強度は有意に低下する。したがって、MK/Eu−Alナノクラスターを0.5〜3未満の比、より好ましくは1.0〜2.5の比の範囲内に制御することが望ましい。この結果は、ナノクラスターにおけるアンテナ配位子対RE原子の望ましい比にまで一般化される。
MMAと光開始剤としてのジエチルアセトフェノン(DEAP)(0.5重量%)との混合物を単結晶Si(c−Si)太陽電池上に1000rpmの回転速度でスピンコーティングすることにより塗布した。続いて、このフィルムを17mW/cm2の光パワーで2分間にわたりUV照射にさらすことによって重合させた。フィルムのコーティング前後におけるc−Si太陽電池の太陽電池効率を、200Wのランプパワーの太陽スペクトルシミュレーター(Oriel Corporation社製81160モデル)及びソースメーター(Keithley 2004)を使用して得た。
結果として、コーティング前と比較したコーティング後の太陽電池効率の変化率は−17%〜0%の範囲である。いくつかの試料の太陽電池効率が減少したが、これは、おそらく、被覆されたフィルムが太陽電池の反射率を変化させ、入射光の減少を生じたためであると考えられる。したがって、重合MMAフィルムによるコーティングの前後で実質的な変化は観察されなかったと言える。
MMAと、Eu−Alナノクラスター(5重量%)と、DEAP(0.5重量%)(Eu−Al/MMA)との混合物を単結晶Si(c−Si)太陽電池上に1000rpmの回転速度でスピンコートすることにより被覆し、そして上記のとおりに重合させた。結果として、コーティング前と比較したコーティング後の太陽電池効率の変化率は、0%〜+14%の範囲である。対照と比較すると、これは、c−Si太陽電池の太陽電池効率が向上したことを示している。
MMAと、Eu−Alナノクラスター(5重量%)と、MK(EU−Alナノクラスターと等しいモル)と、DEAP(0.5重量%)との混合物を単結晶Si(c−Si)太陽電池上に1000rpmの回転速度でスピンコーティングすることにより被覆し、そして重合させた。結果として、コーティング前と比較したコーティング後の太陽電池効率の変化率は、0%〜+19%の範囲である。先の例と比較すると、c−Si太陽電池の太陽電池効率が向上し、しかもその向上率がEU−Alナノクラスター単独よりも有意に高かったことは明らかである。
本発明者は、RE−Mナノクラスターの一例としてEu−Alナノクラスター[Eu−Al3](OAc)3(O−isoBu)9を使用し、そしてこのナノクラスターをメタクリル酸メチル(MMA)溶液に5重量%で分散させた。Eu−Alナノクラスターの合成手順及びそのMMAへのドーピング(Eu−Al/MMA)手順については、所定の文献に記載されている。例えば、H.Mataki及びT.Fukui,Proc.of 2005 5th IEEE Conference on Nanotechnology(名古屋,2005)、TH−A2−4、又はH.Mataki外,Jpn.J.Appl.Phys.,3,L83(2007)を参照されたい。励起波長範囲を拡大するために、本発明者は、ミヒラーケトン(MK)として知られており、Eu含有有機錯体の励起スペクトルの深色移動を誘導することが知られている4,4’−ビス(N,N−ジメチルアミノ)ベンゾフェノンをさらに添加した。M.H.V.Werts外,Chem.Commun.,1999,799(1999)を参照。
本発明者は、Mataki外のWO2006/004187号に記載されたタイプのプロピレングリコールα−モノメチルエーテルに分散された様々なEu−M(M=Al、Nb、Ti、Ga、Ta、Zr、Hf)ナノクラスターを合成し、そして380nmで励起することによってPLを測定した。Eu−Ga、Eu-Ta、Eu−Hf及びEu−Zrについて、本発明者は、Eu3+に特有の狭帯域発光に加えて、約400nm〜550nmの範囲の広帯域発光を観察した。一方、このような広帯域発光は、Eu−Al、Eu−Nb及びEu−Tiについては見いだされなかった。したがって、好ましい実施形態では、組成物は、Ga、Ta、Hf及びそれらの混合物から選択される少なくとも1個の原子を含む(好ましくはEuと共に含む)。
この場合、電荷移動錯体の形成は予期できないことである。RE−Mナノクラスターは、環境から希土類原子を分離して消光を防ぐように設計されたものであり、そしてこの効果を実証した。ここで使用したRE−Mナノクラスター試料は、予め架橋重合体マトリックスに形成されたものであり、処理は、この架橋重合体のTgよりもはるかに低温で行う。これらのアンテナ配位子は、さほど反応性はなく、しかもこれらのアンテナ配位子はRE−Mナノクラスター構造を破壊しないと思われる。それにもかかわらず、本発明者は、該アンテナ配位子とRE−Mナノクラスターとによる電荷移動錯体の形成を観察した。
従来技術では、アンテナ分子と希土類イオンとの距離が増感効率を左右する重要な要因であることが示されている。特にMKを使用した増感の場合には、MKは、Euと直接配位するために必要であると同時に、EuとMKとの距離を2.24Å以内に維持することが必要である。M.H.V.Werts,「Luminescent Lanthanide Complex:Visible light sensitized red and near−infrared luminescence」,アムステルダム大学博士論文,p.105(2000)参照。HF及びDFT(ハートリー・フォック及び密度汎関数理論)計算に基づき、Eu−Alナノクラスターの半径は約15Åであると推定されている。この距離は、MKによるEuの増感を誘導するのには大きすぎる。しかしながら、本発明者は、驚くべきことに、MKが、Eu−AlナノクラスターとMMAとの共重合であってもEuを増感させることを発見した。本発明者は、これが生じ得る2つの見込まれる経路を調査した:
経路1:MKとEuとの直接配位
経路2:Eu−Alナノクラスターにおける1個以上の配位子の1個以上の結合の切断。
本発明者が実施したHF及びFDT計算によれば、MKが配位子を押し分けてEuと配位子するとは考えにくい。というのは、MKは、金属配位子により形成された擬かご型構造によってEu3+の近くに接近するのを妨げられるからである。しかしながら、MKが所定の機構により配位子を介してEuに接近する場合には、Euイオンの周囲の対称性が変化するはずである。
仮に経路2が起こるとすると、Al−酸素(O)結合が攻撃され切断される可能性が高い。Al−O結合が切断されるかどうかをチェックするために、本発明者は、X線光電子分光法(XPS)を実施した。ここで、PGME中に5重量%で分散されたEu−Alナノクラスターを透明シリコン片上に滴下した。続いて、PGMEを約120℃で蒸発させたところ、白色の粉末が残った。[Eu−Al]−MKについて、十分なMKをEu−Alナノクラスターの5重量%PGME溶液に溶解させて1:1のMK:Eu−Alモル比とした。この[Eu−Al]−MK溶液を清浄シリコンウエハー上に滴下し、そしてPGMEを約120℃で蒸発させたところ、帯黄色の粉末が残ったが、これは、MKとMPとの相互作用を示すものである。
上記実験結果から、Eu−AlナノクラスターのEuは、従来技術に記載された態様では増感されないことが示唆される。Eu−AlナノクラスターのMK増感の機構を推測するために、本発明者は、MKがどのようにしてEu−Alナノクラスターと相互作用しているのかを、吸収スペクトルを測定することによって観察しようと試みた。

Claims (22)
- 有機重合体マトリックスと、該重合体中に分散された希土類金属ナノクラスターと、該希土類金属ナノクラスターの外側に配置されたアンテナ配位子とを含む組成物であって、該希土類金属ナノクラスターが1〜100nmのサイズ範囲内にあり、かつ、酸素原子又は硫黄原子を介して少なくとも1個の半金属又は遷移金属に結合したランタニド原子を含み、該重合体マトリックスがポリメタクリル酸メチル又は環状オレフィン共重合体(COC)を含み、該ランタニド原子がEuを含み、該少なくとも1個の半金属又は遷移金属がAl又はGaを含み、しかも該アンテナ配位子が4,4’−ビス(N,N−ジメチルアミノ)ベンゾフェノン、4,4’−ビス(N,N−ジエチルアミノ)ベンゾフェノン及び4,4’−ビス(N,N−ジメチルアミノ)チオベンゾフェノンから選択される組成物。
- 375〜450nmのPLスペクトル領域内で広い吸収ピークを有し、しかも、該ピークが半分の高さで少なくとも25nmの幅である、請求項1に記載の組成物。
- 前記ナノクラスターが1〜10nmのサイズの範囲内である、請求項1又は2に記載の組成物。
- 前記ランタニド原子が前記少なくとも1個の半金属又は遷移金属に酸素原子を介して結合している、請求項1〜3のいずれかに記載の組成物。
- 前記半金属又は遷移金属がAlを含む、請求項1〜4のいずれかに記載の組成物。
