Claims (20)
- 互いに対向する第1主面と第2主面とを有する液晶層と、
前記液晶層に電圧を印加する複数の電極と、
前記液晶層の前記第1主面または前記第2主面の一方の主面に向けて光を出射する照明装置とを備え、
前記液晶層は、所定の電圧が印加されたときに、前記一方の主面の近傍のアンカリング層の液晶分子と異なる方向に配向した液晶分子を含む中間層を形成し、前記一方の主面の近傍の前記アンカリング層を透過した直線偏光を、前記中間層内またはその近傍において前記一方の主面に向けて屈折し、
前記液晶層に電圧を印加していない状態で白を表示し、前記液晶層に電圧を印加した状態で黒表示を行う、表示装置。 - 前記アンカリング層を透過した前記直線偏光に対する前記中間層の屈折率は、前記アンカリング層の屈折率よりも小さい、請求項1に記載の表示装置。
- 前記照明装置から前記一方の主面に向けて出射される前記直線偏光は、前記アンカリング層の液晶分子の長軸と平行な成分を有する、請求項1または2に記載の表示装置。
- 前記液晶層は誘電率異方性が正の液晶分子を含む垂直配向型液晶層であり、
前記複数の電極は、前記液晶層に横電界を印加する複数の電極であって、
前記直線偏光はp偏光である、請求項1から3のいずれかに記載の表示装置。 - 前記液晶層は誘電率異方性が負の液晶分子を含む垂直配向型液晶層であり、
前記複数の電極は、前記液晶層を介して互いに対向するように配置された複数の電極であって、
前記直線偏光はp偏光である、請求項1から3のいずれかに記載の表示装置。 - 前記液晶層は誘電率異方性が正の液晶分子を含む水平配向型液晶層であり、
前記複数の電極は、前記液晶層に横電界を印加する複数の電極であって、
前記直線偏光はs偏光である、請求項1から3のいずれかに記載の表示装置。 - 前記液晶層は誘電率異方性が正の液晶分子を含む水平配向型液晶層であり、
前記複数の電極は、前記液晶層を介して互いに対向するように配置された複数の電極であって、
前記直線偏光はs偏光である、請求項1から3のいずれかに記載の表示装置。 - 前記照明装置は、前記液晶層の前記第2主面側に設けられており、
前記液晶層の前記第1主面側に設けられた傾斜反射層をさらに有する、請求項1から7のいずれかに記載の表示装置。 - 前記傾斜反射層の前記液晶層とは反対側に、さらに光吸収層を有する、請求項8に記載の表示装置。
- 前記照明装置は、前記液晶層の前記第1主面側に設けられており、
前記照明装置と前記液晶層の前記第1主面との間に設けられた第1傾斜反射層をさらに有する、請求項1から7のいずれかに記載の表示装置。 - 前記第1傾斜反射層の前記液晶層側に、さらに光吸収層を有する、請求項10に記載の表示装置。
- 前記液晶層の前記第2主面側に設けられた第2傾斜反射層または散乱層をさらに有する、請求項10または11に記載の表示装置。
- 前記照明装置は、光源と導光板とを備える、請求項1から12のいずれかに記載の表示装置。
- 前記照明装置は、前記光源と前記導光板との間に偏光選択膜をさらに備える、請求項13に記載の表示装置。
- 前記照明装置は、前記導光板を介して前記光源に対向するように配置された反射層をさらに有する、請求項13に記載の表示装置。
- 前記照明装置は、前記反射層と前記導光板との間に4分の1波長板をさらに備える、請求項15に記載の表示装置。
- 前記液晶層の前面側に配置されたカラーフィルタ層をさらに有し、前記照明装置は前記液晶層の背面側に配置されている、請求項1から7のいずれかに記載の表示装置。
- 前記照明装置は、複数のあなを背面に有する平行平板型の導光板と、
前記複数のあなのそれぞれに設けられた反射構造体と、
それぞれが前記反射構造体に向かって光を出射する複数の光源と
を備える、請求項17に記載の表示装置。 - 前記導光板の背面側にさらに光吸収層を有する、請求項18に記載の表示装置。
- 前記導光板と前記光吸収層との間に、前記導光板よりも屈折率の低い層が設けられている、請求項19に記載の表示装置。
