図10に示した蛍光表示装置600を以下の様にして作製した。
図11に示した蛍光表示装置700を作製した。
従来の透過型液晶表示装置を比較例の表示装置とした。エッジライト方式のバックライト用の光源には白色LED光源を1つ用いた。
Claims (18)
- 互いに対向する第1主面と第2主面とを有する液晶層と、
前記液晶層に電圧を印加する複数の電極と、
前記液晶層の前記第1主面側に設けられた蛍光体層と、
前記液晶層の前記第2主面に向けて、前記蛍光体層を励起する光を出射する照明装置とを備え、
前記液晶層は、所定の電圧が印加されたときに、第2主面近傍のアンカリング層の液晶分子と異なる方向に配向した液晶分子を含む中間層を形成し、第2主面近傍の前記アンカリング層を透過した直線偏光を、前記中間層内またはその近傍において前記第2主面に向けて屈折し、
前記液晶層に電圧を印加していない状態で前記蛍光体層が発光する光を用いて表示を行い、前記液晶層に電圧を印加した状態で黒表示を行う、表示装置。 - 前記アンカリング層を透過した前記直線偏光に対する前記中間層の屈折率は、前記アンカリング層の屈折率よりも小さい、請求項1に記載の表示装置。
- 前記照明装置から前記第2主面に向けて出射される前記直線偏光は、前記アンカリング層の液晶分子の長軸と平行な成分を有する、請求項1または2に記載の表示装置。
- 前記液晶層は誘電率異方性が正の液晶分子を含む垂直配向型液晶層であり、
前記複数の電極は、前記液晶層に横電界を印加する複数の電極であって、
前記直線偏光はp偏光である、請求項1に記載の表示装置。 - 前記液晶層は誘電率異方性が負の液晶分子を含む垂直配向型液晶層であり、
前記複数の電極は、前記液晶層を介して互いに対向するように配置された複数の電極であって、
前記直線偏光はp偏光である、請求項1から3のいずれかに記載の表示装置。 - 前記液晶層は誘電率異方性が正の液晶分子を含む水平配向型液晶層であり、
前記複数の電極は、前記液晶層に横電界を印加する複数の電極であって、
前記直線偏光はs偏光である、請求項1から3のいずれかに記載の表示装置。 - 前記液晶層は誘電率異方性が正の液晶分子を含む水平配向型液晶層であり、
前記複数の電極は、前記液晶層を介して互いに対向するように配置された複数の電極であって、
前記直線偏光はs偏光である、請求項1から3のいずれかに記載の表示装置。 - 前記蛍光体層の前記液晶層とは反対側に反射層を有する、請求項1から7のいずれかに記載の表示装置。
- 前記反射層は、再帰反射層である、請求項8に記載の表示装置。
- 前記蛍光体層の前記液晶層とは反対側に光吸収層をさらに有する、請求項1から7のいずれかに記載の表示装置。
- 前記照明装置は、光源と導光板とを備える、請求項1から10のいずれかに記載の表示装置。
- 前記照明装置は、前記光源と前記導光板との間に偏光選択膜をさらに備える、請求項11に記載の表示装置。
- 前記照明装置は、前記導光板を介して前記光源に対向するように配置された反射層をさらに有する、請求項11または12に記載の表示装置。
- 前記照明装置は、前記反射層と前記導光板との間に4分の1波長板をさらに備える、請求項13に記載の表示装置。
- 前記蛍光体層は前記液晶層の前面側に配置されており、前記照明装置は前記液晶層の背面側に配置されている、請求項1から7のいずれかに記載の表示装置。
- 前記照明装置は、複数のあなを背面に有する平行平板型の導光板と、
前記複数のあなのそれぞれに設けられた反射構造体と、
それぞれが前記反射構造体に向かって光を出射する複数の光源と
を備える、請求項15に記載の表示装置。 - 前記導光板の背面側にさらに光吸収層を有する、請求項16に記載の表示装置。
- 前記導光板と前記光吸収層との間に、前記導光板よりも屈折率の低い層が設けられている、請求項17に記載の表示装置。
