Abstract
Description
本出願は、米国特許法第119条(e)項に従い、米国仮特許出願第61/993,840号の優先権の効果を主張しており、その出願は、2014年5月15日に出願され、かつ、発明の名称が「リチウムイオン電池用の高エネルギー容量ナノ結晶系アノードを生成する方法」であり、本出願は、さらに、米国仮特許出願第61/993,870号の優先権の効果を主張しており、その出願は、2014年5月15日に出願され、かつ、発明の名称が「リチウムイオン電池用の硫黄搭載(sulfur charged、硫黄が搭載された、硫黄が担持された、硫黄で被覆された、硫黄が付着された、硫黄が内蔵された、硫黄が取り込まれた)カーボンナノチューブ製カソードを生成する方法」であり、それら米国仮特許出願のそれぞれは、PCT規則第4.18および20.6の適用をも目的として、引用により全体的にこの明細書に合体される。
リチウム硫黄(Li−S)電池は、カソード設計構造にとっての魅力的な選択肢となってきており、その理由は、その電池が、Li2Sとの完全な反応が行われると仮定すると、約2600Wh/kg(1672mAh/g)というように高い理論比エネルギー密度を有するということにある。さらに、リチウム硫黄エネルギー(Li−S)ストレージのリサイクル性能(cyclability)(すなわち、電池の容量が初期容量の80%未満の値に低下するまでその電池を充電できる回数)は、電池技術を大きく進歩させる潜在能力を有し、その理由は、リチウムイオン電池用のLi−S構造が高理論エネルギー密度(1672mAh/g)を有するということにある。この高容量に加え、硫黄をカソード材料として用いることは、生態系にやさしい一方で、自然界に非常に豊富に存在するという利点と、低コストであるという利点とを有する。従来のLi−S構造は、リサイクル性能が低いため、その技術が、商業的に実現可能な製品となることを阻害する。材料技術および電気自動車に関する用途が最近進歩しているため、Li−S電池に対する新たな関心に拍車がかかっている。
シリコン結晶およびゲルマニウム結晶は、理論的には、多数のリチウムイオンを収容する(accommodate、吸蔵する、収納する)ことが可能である。リチウム原子の原子比であってSi原子またはGe原子により利用されることが可能なものは、4.4:1である(すなわち、22Li:5SiまたはGe(Li:SiまたはGe=22:5))。複数個のリチウムイオンは、シリコンまたはゲルマニウムの結晶格子を構成する複数個の原子間の複数の隙間内に入り込む程度に十分に小さい。さらに、ゲルマニウムは、本質的に、提案されている他のアノード材料より高速に複数個のリチウムイオンを受け入れることが可能であり、このことは、テストデータを用いて経験的に実証されてきている。リチウムイオンがGe内に拡散する速度(diffusivity、拡散率)は、シリコンより400倍速く、また、標準的なリチウムイオン技術よりほぼ1000倍速い。
図9に示す概略的な方法および上述の文章による説明に従い、リチウムイオン電池用の高エネルギー容量アノードが、電気化学的な過飽和(electrochemical super saturation)であって、リチウムが、シリコン、ゲルマニウムおよびシリコン・ゲルマニウム合金より成る複数個のナノ粒子内に過飽和状態で溶解する方法により形成されてもよい。シリコンより成るナノ粒子、ゲルマニウムより成るナノ粒子および/またはシリコン・ゲルマニウム合金より成るナノ粒子(Universal Nanotech Corporation社製)は、イオン性流体である1−ブチル−3−メチルイミダゾリウムチオシアナート(1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium thiocyanate)(bmimSCN)と、非水性溶媒であるジエチルアセトアミドとの混合物内にコロイドとして懸濁させられた。リチウム金属リボンより成る2/3インチのストリップがアノードとして使用され、また、炭素電極がカソードとして使用された。それぞれの電極は、電圧源のうちのそれぞれの端子に接続されるとともに、前記コロイド混合物(the colloidal mixture、上述のコロイドとしての懸濁液)内に配置された。250mVと5Vとの範囲内、典型的には、2Vと4Vとの範囲内にある電圧が、リチウムが前記複数個のナノ結晶にインターカレートすることを開始するために、前記溶液に電流を流すために印加された。
アルゴンで充填された環境(すなわち、グローブボックス(glove box、密閉容器))内において、リチウム金属箔より成る2枚の別々の部分(それぞれ、長さ2cm×幅1cm×厚さ0.038cm)がそれぞれ、電源のうちの負極と正極とに接続された。Si0.22Ge0.78NCs(Siを0.22、Geを0.78の比率で含有する複数個のナノ結晶)が、1−ブチル−3−メチルイミダゾリウムチオシアナート(bmimSCN)内に分散させられるとともに、三角フラスコ内において常時撹拌されつつ、アルゴン存在下に、40℃まで加熱された。前記イオン性流体内のSi0.22Ge0.78NCsの濃度は、ほとんど全部のリチウムが前記三角フラスコ内のゲルマニウム製ナノ結晶の部分(the amount of、量)によって吸収されるように、前記リチウム(長さ1cm×幅1cm×厚さ0.038cm)に適合させられた(was matched to)。この実験のために、0.00288モルのリチウム(1cm2)と、0.0160モルのSi0.22Ge0.78NCsとが使用された。前記複数の電極(The electrodes、前記負極と正極)は、1cm2のリチウム金属がSi0.22Ge0.78NCsより成るイオン性流体分散液内に浸漬される状態で、それら電極が互いに1cmの距離を隔てて正対するように配置された。3Vという定電圧が、Si0.22Ge0.78NCsを正極上のリチウム金属まで移動させるために用いられ、その正極においては、リチウムが、引き続いて、Si0.22Ge0.78NCs内に拡散させられた。その反応は、25分後に停止した。その結果生成された物は、深い赤色(deep red)を帯びたペーストであって、前記イオン性流体と、リチウム化されたSi0.22Ge0.78NCsとによって構成されたものであった。
実施例2が採用するプロセスが、電解質、すなわち、リチウム ビス(トリフルオロメタンスルホニル)イミド(lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide)(LiTFSI)を導入し、それにより、bmimSCN内でのLiTFSIの1M(1M、1リットル中に1モル溶解している)溶液を作製するように変更された。よって、その概略的な方法は、図10に示すプロセスおよび上述の文章による説明に従うように変更された。さらに、そのプロセスは、室温で行われた。すべての他の側面においては、それら実験条件が同一であった。リチウム塩(LiTFSI)が添加されることにより、前記ペーストを作製するための反応時間が25分から15分に短縮された。
図10に示す概略的な方法および上述の文章による説明に従い、アルゴンで充填された環境内(すなわち、グローブボックス(glove box、密閉容器)内)において、かつ、室温および大気圧下において、リチウム金属箔より成る2枚の別々の部分(それぞれ、長さ2cm×幅1cm×厚さ0.038cm)がそれぞれ、電源のうちの負極と正極とに接続された。高品質(球対称性を有する)ゲルマニウムより成る複数個のナノ結晶(直径は150nm未満)が、リチウム塩、すなわち、リチウム ヘキサフルオロリン酸塩(lithium hexafluorophosphate)(LiPF6)内に、炭酸エチレン対炭酸ジエチルの比率(ratio of ethylene carbonate to diethyl carbonate)が1:1である状態で、三角フラスコ内で分散させられた。前記複数の電極(The electrodes、前記負極と正極)は、1cm2のリチウム金属が、複数個のゲルマニウム製ナノ結晶(GeNCs)が電解質内に分散させられている液内に浸漬される状態で、1cmの距離を隔てて互いに正対するように配置された。この実験のために、0.00288モルのLiPF6と、0.0127モルの複数個のゲルマニウム製ナノ結晶(GeNCs)とが使用された。前記電解質内の複数個のゲルマニウム製ナノ結晶の濃度は、ほとんど全部のリチウムが、前記三角フラスコ内のゲルマニウムの部分(the amount of、量)によって吸収されるように、前記リチウム(長さ1cm×幅1cm×厚さ0.038cm)に適合させられた(was matched to)。4Vという定電圧が、前記複数個のゲルマニウム製ナノ結晶を前記正極上のリチウム金属まで移動させるために用いられ、その正極においては、リチウムが、前記リチウム箔上に被着させられた複数個のゲルマニウム製ナノ結晶(GeNCs)内に拡散させられた。その反応は、15分後に停止した。その結果生成された物は、粘性を有するとともに暗い黒紫色(purple-black)を帯びたペーストであって、電解質と、リチウム化された複数個のゲルマニウム製ナノ結晶(GeNCs)とによって構成されたものであった。その後、そのペーストは、リチウムイオン電池のアノードとして使用されるために、バインダまたは導電性カーボン添加剤と混合されるとともに、導電性基板上に被着させられることが可能である。
実施例4が採用するプロセスが、リチウム ヘキサフルオロリン酸塩(LiPF6)に関連して、1−ブチル−3−メチルイミダゾリウムチオシアナート(bmimSCN)を前記イオン性流体として使用するように変更された。すべての他の側面においては、実施例4で採用した器具、条件および方法が、電気化学反応の発生中に2Vと4Vとの範囲内というようにより低い電圧が一定に保持される点を除き、変更されずに採用された。茶褐色から黒紫色までの範囲内の色(a dark-brown to purple-black color)を呈するペーストが、電解質と、リチウムが搭載された(lithium loaded)複数個のゲルマニウム製ナノ結晶(GeNCs)とであって、いずれもリチウム電極上に形成されたものによって構成された。そのペーストを用いてアノードが形成され、そのアノードは、実施例1と同様な方法で、カソード電極と組み合わせられ、それにより、単電池が形成された。図11は、この望ましい単電池についての充放電サイクル(discharge/recharge cycles)の時系列1100を示している。その単電池は、エネルギー容量(energy capacity、収容エネルギー、電池容量)と、体積エネルギー密度とを求めるために、標準的なリチウムイオン電池の試験手順に従って試験された。各充填サイクル(Each charge cycle)1102は、C/10の充電速度(charge rate)と、1Cの放電速度(discharge rate)とを有していた。当該単電池は、98%のクーロン効率を有しており、すなわち、各放電サイクル1104が、充填のための取り込まれたエネルギーのうちの98%という一定値を有していた。
複数の試料が、ガラスで被覆されたインジウムすず酸化物上にGeNCを電着する(electrodepositing)ことによって調製された。Agilent Technologies社製の4155C半導体パラメータ・アナライザと、Alessi社製の2本のニードル・プローブ(needle probe、触針式のニードル状電気特性検査具)であって当該試料に接触させられるものとを用いて、複数のI−V曲線が取得され、約7Vから約14Vまでの範囲内の複数のVOC(開放電圧、開放回路電圧、電池に電流が流れていないときの電圧、無負荷電圧)値が測定された。さらに、観察された充電速度(charge rate)および放電速度(discharge rate)が、バルク(bulk 、ナノ材料より大きいサイズを有する)のシリコンまたはゲルマニウムのような他の技術に匹敵した。
いくつかの実施態様においては、この書類に記載されているいくつかの電池およびそれらと同様ないくつかのデバイスが、この書類に記載されているアノードであって、この書類に記載されている複数個のナノ結晶を有するものと、カソードと、それらカソードとアノードとの間に配置されるセパレータと、電解質とを有してもよい。この開示事項を考慮すると、当業者は、目標の電池および同様なデバイスを達成するためにそのようないくつかの部品についての前述の複数の構成態様が存在することを理解すべきである。同様なデバイスについてのいくつかの例としては、スーパー・キャパシタ(super-capacitor、電気二重層コンデンサ)、ウルトラ・キャパシタ(ultra-capacitor、電気二重層コンデンサ)、キャパシタ、DIP型電池、フレックス電池(flex battery、屈曲可能な電池)、大型電池(large-format battery)およびそれらと同様なものがあってもよいが、それらに限定されない。
電池の試作品が、複数個のLi−GeNCを有するアノードを用いて生成された。そのアノードは、単位面積当たりのエネルギー密度が約7.67mWh/cm2であり、単位面積当たりの容量(capacity、取り出せる電気の量)が約2.32mAh/cm2であるというように測定され、それら測定値から、約38,350Wh/Lというアノードのエネルギー密度(energy density、体積エネルギー密度)と、13,456Wh/kgというアノードの比エネルギー(specific energy、重量エネルギー密度)と、約3,684Ah/kgというアノードの比容量(specific capacity、重量容量密度、重量エネルギー密度)とが誘導された。さらに、数回の充放電サイクル(20回より多い)の終了後、当該電池は、無視できないほどに大きな性能劣化を示さなかった。この種の電池は、充電され、電荷(charge、充電された電荷)を2週間から3週間の間、無視できないほどに大きな電荷損失を伴うことなく維持してきた。
別の電池の試作品が、複数個のLi−SiGeNCの中に収容されたリチウムを有するアノードを用いて生成された。そのアノードは、単位面積当たりのエネルギー密度(energy density per area、単位面積当たりの容量、電池容量密度)が約3mAh/cm2であるというように測定された。さらに、数回の充放電サイクル(20回より多い)の終了後、当該電池は、無視できないほどに大きな性能劣化を示さなかった。この種の電池は、充電され、電荷(charge、充電された電荷)を2週間から3週間の間、無視できないほどに大きな電荷損失を伴うことなく維持してきた。
図15は、完成品としてのコイン型単電池であって、全体として符号1500が付されたものを示す概略図である。図16は、図15に示す実施態様に従って完成品としてのコイン型単電池を組み立てる方法を、全体として符号1600が付された状態で示している。当該完成品としてのコイン型単電池1500は、セル・ベース1502と、半電池カソード1504と、1または複数のセパレータ1506a/1506bと、半電池アノード1508と、1または複数枚のスペーサ1510a/1510bと、付勢デバイス1512と、セル・カバー1514とを有してもよい。
Claims (20)
- 複数の硫黄搭載カーボンナノチューブを製造する方法であって、
昇華硫黄をソルベント内において溶解させ、それにより、溶液を生成する溶解工程と、
複数のカーボンナノチューブを前記溶液に添加するカーボンナノチューブ添加工程と、
極性プロトン性溶媒を前記溶液に添加する極性プロトン性溶媒添加工程と、
前記ソルベントを前記溶液から除去する除去工程と
を含む方法。 - 前記ソルベントは、二硫化炭素を含有する請求項1に記載の方法。
- 前記溶解工程は、前記溶液を超音波処理する工程と、前記溶液を撹拌する工程と、前記溶液を加熱する工程とのうちの少なくとも一つを含む請求項1に記載の方法。
- 前記除去工程は、
前記ソルベントのうちの第1部分を、前記溶液の加熱によって蒸発させる工程と、
前記ソルベントのうちの第2部分を、前記溶液の風乾によって除去する工程と
を含む請求項1に記載の方法。 - 前記カーボンナノチューブ添加工程は、前記溶液を超音波処理する工程と、前記溶液を撹拌する工程と、前記溶液を加熱する工程とのうちの少なくとも一つを含む請求項1に記載の方法。
- 前記極性プロトン性溶媒添加工程は、前記極性プロトン性溶媒を予め定められた速度で滴下する工程を含む請求項1に記載の方法。
- 前記昇華硫黄のうちの少なくとも一部は、前記複数のカーボンナノチューブをナノ毛管作用で充填する請求項1に記載の方法。
- 前記昇華硫黄のうちの少なくとも一部は、前記複数のカーボンナノチューブの外壁に付着する請求項1に記載の方法。
- 硫黄搭載カーボンナノチューブであって、
外壁を有するカーボンナノチューブと、
そのカーボンナノチューブの内部に存在する第1複数個の硫黄粒子と、
前記カーボンナノチューブの前記外壁に結合された第2複数個の硫黄粒子と
を含む硫黄搭載カーボンナノチューブ。 - 前記第2複数個の硫黄粒子は、前記カーボンナノチューブにπ結合される請求項9に記載の硫黄搭載カーボンナノチューブ。
- 前記カーボンナノチューブは、単層カーボンナノチューブと、二層カーボンナノチューブと、多層カーボンナノチューブとのうちのいずれかである請求項9に記載の硫黄搭載カーボンナノチューブ。
- 前記カーボンナノチューブは、10nm未満の直径を有する請求項9に記載の硫黄搭載カーボンナノチューブ。
- 前記カーボンナノチューブは、3μmと5μmとの範囲内の長さを有する請求項9に記載の硫黄搭載カーボンナノチューブ。
- リチウム硫黄電池用のカソードであって、
電極と、
その電極にバインダによって結合され、複数の硫黄搭載カーボンナノチューブより成る膜と
を含み、
前記複数の硫黄搭載カーボンナノチューブは、
各々外壁を有する複数のカーボンナノチューブと、
それらカーボンナノチューブの内部に存在する第1複数個の硫黄粒子と、
前記複数のカーボンナノチューブの複数の外壁に結合された第2複数個の硫黄粒子と
を含むカソード。 - さらに、前記複数の硫黄搭載カーボンナノチューブより成る前記膜内に分散させられる導電性カーボン添加剤を含む請求項14に記載のカソード。
- 前記電極は、アルミニウムである請求項14に記載のカソード。
- 前記膜は、20μmと50μmとの範囲内の厚さを有する請求項14に記載のカソード。
- 前記複数のカーボンナノチューブは、単層カーボンナノチューブと、二層カーボンナノチューブと、多層カーボンナノチューブとのうちのいずれかである請求項14に記載のカソード。
- 前記バインダは、ポリ(アクリロニトリル−メチルメタクリレート)である請求項14に記載のカソード。
- 前記複数の硫黄搭載カーボンナノチューブは、多孔性である請求項14に記載のカソード。
