反応容器内の空間にX線照射を導入してX線照射空間を形成し、その照射空間内に1つ以上の反応物質を導入する。このとき、当該2つ以上の反応物質及びその後生成された中間反応物質については、当該反応物質が何らかの程度でイオン化されるときはその全体の程度を選択的に制御し、当該反応物質の内のイオン化される部分であって照射空間内にある部分のイオン化の程度(部分的から全部)の平均値を選択的に制御するが、当該制御はX線照射の線束とエネルギーを制御することにより行うことで、照射空間内における反応物質中の選択的反応の誘発を起こさせる。

しかし多くの場合、これらの処理条件は望ましくない結果を招くことがある。これらの処理はまたエネルギー的に非効率でもありうる。
照射と混合を同時に行えるようにするため、図1のシステム10は注入及び混合操作を実行するのに必要なハードウェアを装備している。
反応物質20と22bの、照射空間18へ導入する前の時点での予備混合は、これらの反応物質が通常は相互に反応しない場合であって、照射空間18で発生するようなイオン化が発生しない限り、又は、標準的ではない温度、圧力、触媒条件のいずれか又は全部に置かれないのであれば、適切である。このアプローチにより、放射線遮蔽型パイプアセンブリ24を除外する結果、より単純で低コストのRCP 11が実現できる。
大半の化学プロセス反応の場合と同様に、原料反応物20と他の反応物質22a及び22bとの間の適切な比率を維持することが必須である。混合比を制御する動的手段が望まれる場合、少なくとも以下の二つの機能を提供する制御システムであってフィードバックを用いる制御システムを含めることが好ましい:
1.原料と反応物質の正確な量の測定、及び
2.原料と反応物質との間の混合比を制御する手段。
図1を参照すると、反応誘発型化学処理器(RCP)11の基本的プロセスは、原料反応物質20の一部又は全部と他のすべての反応物質22a及び22bの全体的又は部分的なイオン化、及びこれに続いて、得られた原子核種の混合物の最低エネルギー準位への再組み換えを含む。得られた原子核種の混合物は出力フロー40を生成する。図1を参照すると、RCP 11において、化学的反応プロセスには、例えば、原料反応物質20と他の反応性化学物質22a及び22bの全部又は一部の完全な又は部分的なイオン化が含まれている。
本発明で請求している方法は、主としてパルス状X線発生源からのX線による照射によりポリマーの分子量を減少させる手段を提供する。この例としては、本発明の方法を使用してタールサンド中に存在する炭化水素分子を処理して鎖の切断による分子量の減少を行わせるようにすることが含まれる。分子量の減少、即ち分子鎖長の減少により、粘度を減少させ、容易な分離に向けた大幅な改善を可能にする。本発明の方法は、反応物質を注入する、又は照射空間18内部に、分子鎖の切断点を決定するか又は最終製品に他の望ましい特性を付与することができる触媒を配置するかのいずれか又は両方のときに好適に使用できる。低分子量分画はポリマーを可塑化させる傾向があり、残りの高分子量分画はポリマーを硬化させる傾向があるので、必ずしも均一に分子量を減少させる必要はない。分子量の分布の結果として発生する前述の特性の組み合わせは好適なものであり、これによって得られる最終製品の品質が改善される。
本発明の方法では、従来の照射重合と幾分類似した技術を用いて、ただし本発明の方法による効率の増加を利用して、分子量を増加させることも可能である。
RCP 11(図1)は本発明の方法のための好適実施態様であるが、同等の線束を有する他のX線源を使用することもできる。特定の用途に十分なビームの流れを生成することが可能であれば、使用可能なX線源の他の構成も存在する。システムが実現できる生成量はビームの流れの強度に直接比例する。

反応性化学物質(原料反応物質又は他の反応物質)は幾つかの状態のうちの1つ以上とすることができる:
1.ガス状、

2.大気圧以下(部分的又は高真空)、

例示的な反応としては、水で希釈された硫酸ナトリウムの形で実質的に相当量のナトリウムを含む廃棄物流がある。この物質を環境中に放出するのは通常違法であるから、硫酸ナトリウムを反応させて処分及び廃棄の一方又は両方に対してもっと好適な形態へと硫酸ナトリウムを変換するのが望ましい。硫酸ナトリウムが完全にイオン化されると、潜在的な問題としては、水の存在下で自由ナトリウムを放出し得るので、種々の濃度によっては爆発反応を惹起する可能性があることである。

この反応においては、塩化ナトリウム(NaCl)と水(H2O)が結合し、飽和レベルを超えた量が沈殿を形成する。硫酸ナトリウムに塩素をただ混和しただけではこの反応は起こらないことに注意することが重要である。しかし、十分高いエネルギーの照射の下では、所望すれば、この反応の構成要素が完全にイオン化して再結合するので、好適な最低エネルギー状態でこのような反応を起こす。
図2は反応誘発型化学処理器(RCP)11を図示している。RCP 11は、例えば、図1に関連して前述したような反応物質測定システム、制御システム、噴射システムと共に透過型X線源を使用する。RCP 11のX線源は電子銃を有する。図2に図示してあるように、RCP 11は好ましく冷陰極電界放射型カソード46とグリッド48を含む。このような冷陰極電界放射線源での動作条件は、熱電子放出の発生点未満の温度である必要があり、これは華氏約1600度又は摂氏約871.1度である。摂氏約871.1度の温度以上では、冷陰極電界放射型線源は熱電子エミッタとなり、このような動作温度はX線源を動作不能にする。
1.グリッド−カソード間隔はグリッドの全長に亘って一定でなければならない。これは通常グリッドを高張力下に配置するか又は剛構造体で作成することによって達成される。
2.グリッドの構成要素の数は、グリッド−カソード間の領域で一定かつ均一な電場を保証できるように十分に多くしなければならない。
3.グリッド構造体にはどこにも鋭利なエッジやバリがないこと;個々の要素は丸、平坦、又はアスペクト比の高い楕円形状とすることができる。
すべてのエッジは完全に丸めておくのが望ましい。この意味では、完全に丸めてあるというのは、問題となるエッジが材料の厚みの半分に等しい半径を有するということである。これらの設計ルールの現実の実装は組み込まれるグリッドのサイズによって決定される。
もう一度図1を参照すると、注入前の反応物質22aの分子構造を維持するために、X線照射遮蔽型注入手段を提供することが必要である。これにより原料反応物質20を照射空間18へ導入する前及び反応物質22aを1種類以上の他の反応物質へ導入する前の、注入された反応物質22aの時期尚早の解離、又は時期尚早の部分的イオン化を防止する。図1〜図4Eに図示してあるように、遮蔽型注入手段に求められる要件は、X線遮蔽材料による同心円状パイプ60aと60bを提供することにより充足するのが望ましく、遮蔽材料は典型的には鉛又はそれ以外の原子数の大きい元素がよく、パイプ間の間隙を充填する。このようなアセンブリが図1及び図2で参照番号24として図示してある。パイプ60aと60bは典型的には、反応物質20、22a、22b、又は照射空間18内の放射線環境に適合性があり影響を受けないような、ステンレス鋼又は他の何らかの非反応性材料である。
図6に図示してあるように、図1から図4Eで参照番号24としてこれまで図示した又は図4Fで参照番号24aとしてこれまでに図示した、放射線遮蔽型インジェクタ・パイプ・アセンブリは、今回は参照番号71で図示される螺旋形状となっており、これは放射線遮蔽型インジェクタ・パイプ・アセンブリ24又は24aと同様の構造だが、図1、図2、図4Fに図示してあるような直線状ではなく螺旋形状とする点で異なったものである。螺旋形状の目的は注入される反応物質22aに螺旋状の流れを与えることである。このような螺旋状の流れにより原料反応物質20と反応物質22aの混和が促進される。他の種類の螺旋形状、例えば、螺旋状フィン(図示していない)など、原材料反応物質20及び反応物質22aと22bのいずれか一方又は両方に螺旋状の動きを付与する形状は許容可能で、当業者には容易に理解されるであろう。
図7はシステム100を図示したもので、これは図1のシステム10から変化したもので出力フロー再注入ループ102とこれに関連する制御ラインを含んでいる。したがって、出力フロー再注入ループ102とこれに関連する制御ラインについてのみここでは説明し、これらの追加パーツは図1に対応する図面の残りの部分で同様なパーツより幾分太めの線で図示してあり、追加されたパーツの識別を容易にしてある。
RCP 11はまたバッチ処理装置として使用することも可能で、それには、上記の連続型タイプとは対照的にRCP 11を垂直方向に配向して図8で参照番号116として図示した方向を実現し、以下の変更を提供することによる。この構成においては、RCP 116の全体が反応容器となり、パイプ117の底部を円錐形の底板により封止し材料がRCP 116を通って流れるのを防止する。底板118は望ましくは浅い円錐形の構造を有し、排出ポート119が下向きに尖った頂点に位置してバッチ処理RCP 116の排出を促進するようにするのが望ましい。排出ポート119は通常弁122を有し、弁はシリンダとして模式的に図示してある。排出ポート119と弁122の間の接合部は、未反応材料の蓄積する空間を最小限に抑えるように設計されるのが望ましく、照射空間124の内部にあって、バッチ処理RCP 116内のすべての材料が正しく反応することを保証するようにする。バッチ処理RCP 116はまた流入用開口121からの吸引により排出することも可能である。
図9は構造自体に直接一体化されたエネルギー貯蔵コンデンサ120で強化された反応誘発型化学処理器(RCP) 11を示す。コンデンサ120はRCP 11が非常に短い時間間隔の間に照射空間18(図1及び図2参照)に十分な量のエネルギーを得ることが出来るように保証するために設けてある。電気が光速又はそれに近い速度、即ち、約1フィート(30.48cm)/ナノ秒で移動することを考慮すると、またこれに利用可能な時間が僅か数ナノ秒しかないことを考慮すると、エネルギー貯蔵コンデンサ120はRCP 11のX線源の電子銃に接近して配置すべきことが明らかになる。

本明細書から当業者には明らかなように、本発明の方法を実施する際に適切な外部に対する生物学的放射線遮蔽56(図2)が必要になりうる。こうした遮蔽の設計は医療用放射線施設で使用されて定評のある慣行に従うことができる。典型的には、100 KeVあたり0.25インチ(6.35mm)の鉛シールドに加えて、一般的に30%の厚さを追加する任意の安全係数が使用される。安全係数に起因する厚み付加は必要でないものの、本装置から放射される放射線レベルが常に実質的に背景放射限界以下であることを保証する。本発明で使用される装置の形状寸法は通常細長いアスペクト比の高い設計で、これはこうした設計が一般に軸上で発生する放射線の最大限の捕捉を提供する。
RCP 11のX線源としてはパルスモード動作が好適であるが、X線源はカソード電流負荷を定格外とすることで連続モードでの運転が可能である。パルスモードでは、カソード46は約75,000アンペア/平方センチメートルまでの電流負荷で動作可能である。連続モードでは、カソード電流負荷は約400アンペア/平方センチメートルを超えないように制限されるべきである。ここで、「電流負荷」と言う用語は実用的最大カソード電流負荷を表すもので、カソードの理論的最大負荷ではない。また、電源出力電流を変更することにより同一システムがどちらのモードでも実行可能であることに注意されたい。

Claims (31)
- X線放射を使用して化学反応を誘発させるための方法であって、
(a)反応容器内の空間にX線照射を導入することで照射空間を反応容器内に形成するステップと、
(b)前記照射空間に原料反応物質と1つ以上の他の反応物質を導入するステップであって、該1つ以上の他の反応物質のうちの少なくとも1つは流出用開口を有する1つ以上のX線遮蔽型パイプのうちの対応するパイプを経由して導入され、該1つ以上のX線遮蔽型パイプは、該照射空間に前記1つ以上の他の反応物質が導入される前に、前記1つ以上の他の反応物質のうちの少なくとも1つの分子構造を維持するように構成されることを特徴とするステップとを含み、
(C)前記2つ以上の反応物質及びその後生成された中間反応物質について、当該反応物質が何らかの程度でイオン化されるときはその全体の程度を選択的に制御し、当該反応物質の内のイオン化される部分であって照射空間内にある部分のイオン化の平均的な程度(部分的から全部)を選択的に制御するステップであって、該制御はX線照射の線束とエネルギーを制御することにより行い、これらのことにより照射空間内における反応物質中の選択的反応の誘発を起こさせることを特徴とする方法。 - 前記反応容器内に前記照射空間を形成するステップは、冷陰極電界放射型X線源により前記空間内にX線放射を導入することで実現されることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の方法。
- イオン化の程度の平均値を選択的に制御する前記ステップは、全てのイオン化を誘発させるように制御するステップを含むことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の方法。
- イオン化の程度の平均値を選択的に制御する前記ステップは部分的なイオン化を誘発させるように制御するステップを含むことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の方法。
- 原料反応物質より低分子量の最終生成物が実現されることを特徴とする請求項4に記載の方法。
- 原料反応物より長い分子長及び大きな分子量の一方又は両方を有する最終生成物が実現されることを特徴とする請求項4に記載の方法。
- 選択的反応を誘発させるような方法で前記2つ以上の反応物質の導入を制御するステップをさらに含み、該制御するステップは、該反応物質が照射空間へ導入されるそれぞれの速度をリアルタイムで測定し、得られる最終生成物としての最終生成物における所望の化学特性が実現できるように、必要に応じて該導入速度をリアルタイムで調節するステップを含むことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の方法。
- 前記制御するステップは、照射空間から流出する出力流量の体積を測定し、前記最終生成物の化学組成を同定し、これに応じて、得られる最終生成物としての最終生成物における所望の化学特性が実現できるように、該反応物質を該照射空間へそれぞれ導入する速度をリアルタイムで制御することを特徴とする請求項7に記載の方法。
- (a)前記反応容器は1つの軸に沿って延在するパイプとして形成され;
(b)前記パイプの照射部分を前記X線源が包囲し、前記パイプの照射部分にX線照射を向けることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の方法。 - (a)各X線遮蔽型パイプは、内側パイプが外側パイプによって包囲され、これらの間に中間遮蔽材が配設されて複数の流出用開口を有する二重壁式パイプを含み、
(b)前記パイプを通って注入される前記1つ以上の他の反応物質のためのX線照射の遮蔽は、中間遮蔽材及び前記内側パイプと外側パイプのうちの任意のものによって提供される任意の遮蔽に起因する
ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の方法。 - 各X線遮蔽型パイプは、複数の流出用開口を有する単層パイプであって、該パイプはここを通って注入される反応物質のためのX線照射の遮蔽を提供するように選択された組成と壁厚を有することを特徴とする請求項1に記載の方法。
- (a)前記照射空間は1つの軸に沿って延在し、
(b)前記2つ以上の反応物質を導入するステップは、原料反応物質と1つ以上の他の反応物質を導入するステップを含み、
(c)前記1つ以上の他の反応物質は、流出用開口を有する1つ以上のX線遮蔽型パイプのそれぞれを通って前記軸に沿って前記照射空間へ導入される
ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の方法。 - (a)前記反応容器は、反応物質と反応生成物が1つの軸に沿って照射空間内を移動するように構成され、
(b)前記導入ステップは、前記照射空間の上流側の位置から前記照射空間内へ原料反応物質を導入するステップを含み、
(c)前記導入ステップはさらに、1つ以上の他の反応物質を、
(i)流出用開口を有する1つ以上のX線遮蔽型パイプのそれぞれを介して、
(ii)前記照射空間の上流で前記原料反応物質とある程度の混合が起こるように反応領域より十分に上流側にある流入部へ注入され、
(iii)前記X線照射は注入パルスの各パルスと交互するパルスとして供給される
ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の方法。 - X線照射の前記パルスは前記1つ以上の反応物質の前記注入パルスと重ならないことを特徴とする請求項13に記載の方法。
- 前記1つ以上のX線遮蔽型パイプは、前記照射空間を通る方向に沿って螺旋状に構成され、前記X線遮蔽型パイプを通って供給される反応物質と前記原料反応物質との混合を促進するように構成されることを特徴とする請求項13に記載の方法。
- 前記導入ステップは、複数の反応物質を、前記照射空間へ導入するときよりも実質的に前に、連続的に混合するステップを含むことを特徴とする請求項13に記載の方法。
- 前記導入ステップは、複数の反応物質を、前記照射空間へ導入するときよりも実質的に前に、連続的に混合するステップを含むことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の方法。
- (a)前記反応容器は、反応物質と反応生成物が1つの軸に沿って前記照射空間の中を移動して出力フローとして前記照射空間から流出するように構成され、
(b)前記出力フローの一部が前記照射空間の流入部へ注入される
ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の方法。 - 前記X線照射は約1.8電子ボルトから約120万電子ボルトの範囲である
ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の方法。 - 前記X線源はパルス動作される
ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の方法。 - (a)前記照射空間へ直接導入される任意の反応物質が、ガス、液体、粉体などの固体、プラズマ、又はこれらの組み合わせから構成されており、
(b)前記照射空間へ導入される前に相互に導入される任意の反応物質が、ガス、液体、粉体などの固体、プラズマ、又はこれらの組み合わせから構成される
ことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の方法。 - 前記空間出力フローを測定するステップは、望ましくない副産物が形成されたかどうかを判断するステップを含むことを特徴とする請求項8に記載の方法。
- 前記判断するステップは化学センサーを使用することを特徴とする請求項22に記載の方法。
- 1つ以上の反応物質を、主空間を有する反応処理容器へ導入するためのX線遮蔽型パイプアセンブリであって、該パイプアセンブリは主X線遮蔽型経路と該主X線遮蔽型経路から外側に向かって延在する複数のX線遮蔽型インジェクタ経路とを有し、
(a)前記主X線遮蔽型経路は:
(i)内側パイプとこれを包囲する外側パイプと、
(ii)前記内側パイプと前記外側パイプの間の空間に含まれる中間遮蔽材であって、前記主空間内の内容物にX線照射するステップの前にX線照射に対して前記1つ以上のその他の反応物質を遮蔽するための中間遮蔽材を含み、前記主空間内において原料反応物質が前記1つ以上の反応物質と反応することを特徴とし、
(b)各遮蔽型インジェクタ経路は、前記主空間へ前記1つ以上の他の反応物質を供給するための開口を有し、前記内側パイプと前記外側パイプの間で封止的に接続され、該パイプには該1つ以上の他の反応物質の一部が内側パイプからインジェクタ・パイプを経由して主空間へ流入できるようにするための開口がそれぞれに設けてあるインジェクタ開口インサートを含む
ことを特徴とするX線遮蔽型パイプアセンブリ。 - 前記インジェクタ開口インサートは、外側パイプのネジ穴にある外側雌ネジ山と嵌合するための外側雄ネジ山及び内側パイプのネジ穴にある内側雌ネジ山と嵌合するための内側雄ネジ山とを含めることで封止されることを特徴とする請求項24に記載のパイプアセンブリ。
- (a)前記内側雄ネジ山は、テーパー付きの前記内側雌ネジ山とそれぞれ嵌合するために直壁式であり、
(b)前記外側雄ネジ山は、直壁式になっている前記外側雌ネジ山とそれぞれ嵌合するためにテーパー付きになっている
ことを特徴とする請求項25に記載のパイプアセンブリ。 - 前記放射線遮蔽型パイプアセンブリを通って注入される前記1つ以上の他の反応物質のためのX線遮蔽は、前記中間遮蔽材と前記内側パイプ及び外側パイプのいずれかによる任意の遮蔽により提供されることを特徴とする請求項24に記載のパイプアセンブリ。
- 前記内側パイプと前記外側パイプのそれぞれは、前記パイプアセンブリ内に導入される複数の反応物質から中間遮蔽材を隔離するための密封式端部キャップを含むことを特徴とする請求項24に記載のパイプアセンブリ。
- 前記パイプアセンブリは、前記内側パイプ内に侵入させるために、連続溶接処理を用いて、前記反応処理容器に最初に搭載され、その後、スポット溶接を使用して、前記反応処理容器の内壁面に搭載されることを特徴とする請求項24に記載のパイプアセンブリ。
- 前記パイプアセンブリは直線形状であることを特徴とする請求項24に記載のパイプアセンブリ。
- 前記パイプアセンブリは螺旋形状であることを特徴とする請求項24に記載のパイプアセンブリ。
