Description
1つの例示として、上記光学フィルムは、輝度向上フィルムに使用されることができる。本明細書において用語「輝度向上フィルム」は、例えば、入射される光を選択的に透過させるかまたは反射させて、光の利用効率を高めることができる機能性フィルムを意味することができる。
[発明を実施するための形態]
[リオトロピック液晶組成物コーティング液の調剤]
安定したリオトロピック液晶相を形成することができる二色性染料として、業界でDirect Yellow 12として公知されている染料の陽イオンをNa+からLi+に置換した二色性染料を使用してリオトロピック液晶組成物を製造した。上記陽イオンがLi+に置換された二色性染料の屈折率異方性、すなわち上記染料の異方性吸収断片の光学遷移双極子モーメントと平行な方向に偏光軸を有する可視光領域の光に対する屈折率と上記光学遷移双極子モーメントと垂直な方向に偏光軸を有する可視光領域の光に対する屈折率の差の絶対値が最小0.3であった。上記二色性染料の屈折率異方性は、約530nmで最も高く、その数値は、約1.8程度であった。上記二色性染料の屈折率異方性は、Ellipsometerを使用して測定した。上記染料を蒸留水に約1重量%の濃度で溶解させ、また、エチレングリコールを少量溶解させてリオトロピック液晶組成物を製造した。
TACフィルム(550nmの波長に対する屈折率:約1.48、厚さ:80μm)の一面に上記リオトロピック液晶組成物を適切なせん断力下で約200nmの厚さで塗布し、100℃で2分間乾燥させて、異方性層を形成した。
上記製造された異方性層が形成されたTACフィルムのTACフィルムをポリビニルアルコール偏光子を付着して反射型偏光板を製造した。上記付着時には、上記偏光子の光吸収軸と上記異方性層を形成する過程でのコーティング方向が水平を成すように配置して付着した。その後、製造された反射型偏光板を液晶ディスプレイの液晶パネルの一側に配置し、上記装置の輝度特性を評価した。上記で反射型偏光板は、液晶パネルにおいて光源からの光が入射する側に配置するが、偏光子より異方性層が光源側に近く位置するように配置した。輝度特性の評価結果は、図10に示す。上記で、輝度特性の評価は、Eldim社のEX contrast装備を利用して製造社のマニュアルによって行った。
実施例1と同一の方式で反射型偏光板を製造するが、異方性層が上部に形成されたTACフィルムの上記異方性層を上記ポリビニルアルコール偏光子に付着して反射型偏光板を製造し、実施例1と同一の方式で輝度特性を評価し、その結果を図11に示した。
異方性層を適用せず、実施例1で使用したものと同一のポリビニルアルコール偏光子だけを使用して実施例1と同一の方式で輝度特性を評価し、その結果を図12に示す。

Claims (20)
- リオトロピック液晶相を形成することができる二色性染料を含み、上記二色性染料は、異方性吸収断片の光学遷移双極子モーメントと平行な方向に偏光軸を有する可視光領域の光に対する屈折率と上記光学遷移双極子モーメントと垂直な方向に偏光軸を有する可視光領域の光に対する屈折率との差の絶対値が0.2以上である異方性層を有する光学フィルム。
- 上記光学遷移双極子モーメントまたは上記光学遷移双極子モーメントの異方性層平面への投影は、上記異方性層または上記二色性染料の光軸と平行である請求項1に記載の光学フィルム。

- 上記二色性染料は、分子量が300g/mol〜900g/molである、請求項1から4の何れか1項に記載の光学フィルム。
- 上記塩形態の残基Rは、−SO3 −M+または−COO−M+であり、上記でM+は、無機陽イオンである、請求項6に記載の光学フィルム。
- 上記二色性染料は、下記化学式2で表される、請求項1から5の何れか1項に記載の光学フィルム:

- 上記異方性層は、リオトロピック液晶相を形成することができ、最大吸収波長が600nm〜700nmである第1二色性染料を含む第1異方性層及びリオトロピック液晶相を形成することができ、最大吸収波長が400nm〜550nmである第2二色性染料を含む第2異方性層を含む、請求項1から8の何れか1項に記載の光学フィルム。
- 基材をさらに含み、上記異方性層が上記基材上に形成されている、請求項1から9の何れか1項に記載の光学フィルム。
- 上記基材は、550nm波長の光に対する屈折率が1.4以上且つ1.59未満である、請求項10に記載の光学フィルム。
- 上記異方性層上に形成されたハードコーティング層をさらに含む、請求項1から11の何れか1項に記載の光学フィルム。
- 上記ハードコーティング層は、550nm波長の光に対する屈折率が1.4以上且つ1.59未満である、請求項12に記載の光学フィルム。
- 偏光子と、上記偏光子の一面に配置されており、リオトロピック液晶相を形成することができる二色性染料と、を含み、
上記二色性染料は、異方性吸収断片の光学遷移双極子モーメントと平行な方向に偏光軸を有する可視光領域の光に対する屈折率と上記光学遷移双極子モーメントと垂直な方向に偏光軸を有する可視光領域の光に対する屈折率の差の絶対値が0.2以上である異方性層を含む反射型偏光板。 - 上記二色性染料の光学遷移双極子モーメントまたは上記光学遷移双極子モーメントの異方性層の平面への投影と上記偏光子の光吸収軸が水平を成している、請求項14に記載の反射型偏光板。
- 上記異方性層は、リオトロピック液晶相を形成することができ、最大吸収波長が600nm〜700nmである第1二色性染料を含む第1異方性層及びリオトロピック液晶相を形成することができ、最大吸収波長が400nm〜550nmである第2二色性染料を含む第2異方性層を含み、上記第1異方性層が上記第2異方性層に比べて偏光子側に近く配置されている、請求項14または15に記載の反射型偏光板。
- 保護フィルムをさらに含み、上記偏光子、上記保護フィルム及び上記異方性層が順に配置された構造を有する、請求項14から16の何れか1項に記載の反射型偏光板。
- 上記異方性層の保護フィルム側面とは反対面に形成されているハードコーティング層をさらに含む、請求項17に記載の反射型偏光板。
- 保護フィルムをさらに含み、上記偏光子、上記異方性層及び上記保護フィルムが順に配置された構造を有する、請求項15に記載の反射型偏光板。
- 請求項1から13の何れか1項に記載の光学フィルムまたは請求項14から19の何れか1項に記載の反射型偏光板を含むディスプレイ装置。
