Abstract
【解決手段】液晶素子は、第1基板、第2基板、第1基板に設けられた第1電極、第1電極と離間して第1基板の一面側に設けられた第2電極、第1電極又は第2電極に接続されたスイッチング素子、第1電極及び第2電極と重畳して第2基板に設けられた共通電極、第1基板と第2基板の間に設けられた液晶層を備え、第1基板及び第2基板は、液晶層の液晶分子を第1方向に捻れた第1配向状態を生じるように配向処理の方向を設定され、液晶層は、液晶分子を第1方向とは逆の第2方向に捻れた第2配向状態を生じさせる性質のカイラル材を含有し、第2電極と共通電極の間に電圧が印加されたことにより液晶層が第1配向状態へ遷移し、第1電極と第2電極の間に電圧が印加されたことにより液晶層が第2配向状態へ遷移する。

また、本発明に係る具体的態様は、新規な液晶素子を用いた低消費電力駆動が可能な液晶表示装置を提供することを他の目的の1つとする。

Claims (6)
- 各々の一面に配向処理が施されており、対向配置された第1基板及び第2基板と、
前記第1基板の一面側に設けられた第1電極と、
前記第1電極と離間して前記第1基板の一面側に設けられた第2電極と、
前記第1基板の一面側に設けられ、前記第1電極又は前記第2電極に接続されたスイッチング素子と、
少なくとも一部が前記第1電極および前記第2電極と重畳するようにして前記第2基板の一面側に設けられた共通電極と、
前記第1基板の一面と前記第2基板の一面との間に設けられた液晶層、
を含み、
前記第1基板及び前記第2基板は、前記液晶層の液晶分子を第1方向に捻れた第1配向状態を生じるように前記配向処理の方向を設定され、
前記液晶層は、前記液晶分子を前記第1方向とは逆の第2方向に捻れた第2配向状態を生じさせる性質のカイラル材を含有し、
前記第2電極と前記共通電極の間に電圧が印加されたことにより前記液晶層が前記第2配向状態から前記第1配向状態へ遷移し、前記第1電極と前記第2電極の間に電圧が印加されたことにより前記液晶層が前記第1配向状態から前記第2配向状態へ遷移する、
液晶素子。 - 前記第1電極と前記第2電極の少なくとも一方は、相互に離間して平行配置された複数の直線部を有する、請求項1に記載の液晶素子。
- 前記第1電極と前記第2電極が絶縁膜を介して積層されている、請求項1又は2に記載の液晶素子。
- 前記第1基板と前記第2基板は、それぞれ前記液晶層との界面において当該液晶層の液晶分子に20°以上のプレチルト角を付与する、請求項1〜3の何れか1項に記載の液晶素子。
- 前記カイラル材は、前記液晶層の層厚dに対するカイラルピッチの比d/pが0.04以上0.6以下となるように添加される、請求項1〜4の何れか1項に記載の液晶素子。
- 複数の画素部を備え、当該複数の画素部の各々が請求項1〜5の何れか1項に記載の液晶素子を用いて構成された、液晶表示装置。
