Abstract
【解決手段】複数の発光ユニットが、第1の電極及び第2の電極の間に有機化合物を含む層(EL層)を有する発光素子をそれぞれ備え、該第1の電極は、該発光素子ごとに分断されており、該EL層が、発光物質を含む層(発光層)と、該第1の電極及び該発光層の間に設けられたドナー性物質及びアクセプター性物質を含む層とを含み、隣接し異なる色を呈する発光ユニット間にのみ、逆テーパー形状の隔壁を有する発光装置を提供する。

Description
本実施の形態では、本発明の一態様の発光装置について、図1乃至図3を用いて説明する。
以下では、赤色の発光ユニット160R及び緑色の発光ユニット160Gの間の隔壁150を例に用いて、説明する。また、図3に、赤色の発光ユニット160Rの発光素子が発光状態、かつ緑色の発光ユニット160Gの発光素子が非発光状態であるときのEL層の電流経路を矢印で示す。
図1(A)(B)に示す発光装置では、赤色の発光ユニット160R及び赤色の発光ユニット161Rの間、緑色の発光ユニット160G及び緑色の発光ユニット161Gの間、青色の発光ユニット160B及び青色の発光ユニット161Bの間など、一方向に連続して設けられた同じ色を呈する発光ユニット間には、絶縁層124のみが形成され、絶縁層124上に逆テーパー形状の隔壁150が設けられていない。
本実施の形態では、本発明の一態様の発光装置について、図4を用いて説明する。本実施の形態では、実施の形態1で説明した発光ユニットを含む発光部の外側に、共通配線を有する本発明の一態様の発光装置について詳述する。
本発明の一態様の発光装置について、図5、9を用いて説明する。図9は、発光装置を示す平面図であり、図5(A)(B)は、それぞれ、図9を鎖線E−Fで切断した断面図である。なお、図9では、絶縁層104等、一部の構成を省略して示している。また、図5(A)(B)では、隔壁の構成以外は同一である。
以下に本発明の一態様の発光装置に用いることができる材料の一例を記す。
基板としては、ガラス、石英、有機樹脂などの材料を用いることができる。発光素子130からの光を取り出す側の基板は、該光に対する透光性を有する材料を用いる。
本発明の一態様の発光装置に用いるトランジスタ(トランジスタ140、152、153等)の構造は特に限定されない。トップゲート型のトランジスタを用いても良いし、逆スタガ型などのボトムゲート型のトランジスタを用いても良い。また、トランジスタに用いる材料についても特に限定されない。
絶縁層124は、第1の電極118の端部を覆って設けられている。絶縁層124の上層に形成される第2の電極122の被覆性を良好なものとするため、絶縁層124の上端部又は下端部に曲率を有する曲面が形成されるようにするのが好ましい。例えば、絶縁層124の上端部又は下端部に曲率半径(0.2μm〜3μm)を有する曲面を持たせるのが好ましい。また、絶縁層124の材料としては、ネガ型の感光性樹脂、あるいはポジ型の感光性樹脂などの有機化合物や、酸化シリコン、酸窒化シリコン等の無機化合物を用いることができる。また、絶縁層124を遮光性の材料で設けると、発光素子からの発光が、隣接する発光ユニットへ漏れることを抑制することができ、好ましい。
第1の電極118は、光を取り出す側と反対側に設けられ、反射性を有する材料を用いて形成される。反射性を有する材料としては、アルミニウム、金、白金、銀、ニッケル、タングステン、クロム、モリブデン、鉄、コバルト、銅、又はパラジウム等の金属材料を用いることができる。そのほか、アルミニウムとチタンの合金、アルミニウムとニッケルの合金、アルミニウムとネオジムの合金などのアルミニウムを含む合金(アルミニウム合金)や銀と銅の合金などの銀を含む合金を用いることもできる。銀と銅の合金は、耐熱性が高いため好ましい。
基板806には、発光素子130と重なる位置にカラーフィルタ166が設けられている。カラーフィルタ166は、発光素子130からの発光色を調色する目的で設けられる。例えば、白色発光の発光素子を用いてフルカラーの表示装置とする場合には、異なる色のカラーフィルタを設けた複数の発光ユニットを用いる。その場合、赤色(R)、緑色(G)、青色(B)の3色を用いても良いし、これに黄色(Y)を加えた4色とすることもできる。
基板801、806は固定部805においてシール材等によって接着されている。シール材としては、熱硬化樹脂、又は光硬化樹脂などの有機樹脂や、低融点ガラスを含むガラスフリットなどを用いることができる。また、シール材に乾燥剤が含まれていても良い。例えば、アルカリ土類金属の酸化物(酸化カルシウムや酸化バリウム等)のように、化学吸着によって水分を吸収する物質を用いることができる。その他の乾燥剤として、ゼオライトやシリカゲル等のように、物理吸着によって水分を吸着する物質を用いてもよい。乾燥剤が含まれていると、封止領域内の水分などの不純物を低減し、発光素子130の信頼性が向上するため好ましい。
本実施の形態では、本発明の一態様の発光装置に適用することができるEL層の構成例について、図6を用いて説明する。
本実施の形態では、本発明の一態様の発光装置を用いて完成させた様々な電子機器および照明器具の一例について、図7、図8を用いて説明する。
まず、基板加熱処理として、650℃でガラス基板200(旭硝子社製 商品名AN100)を加熱した。
本発明の一態様を適用した画像表示装置(構成例)と、本発明の一態様を適用していない画像表示装置(比較例)の構成及び作製方法について説明する。
上記実施例で用いた(アセチルアセトナト)ビス(6−tert−ブチル−4−フェニルピリミジナト)イリジウム(III)(略称:[Ir(tBuppm)2(acac)])の合成方法について説明する。

Claims (9)
- 複数の発光ユニットが、第1の電極及び第2の電極の間に有機化合物を含む層を有する発光素子をそれぞれ備え、
前記第1の電極は、前記発光素子ごとに分断されており、
前記有機化合物を含む層が、発光物質を含む層と、前記第1の電極及び前記発光物質を含む層の間に設けられたドナー性物質及びアクセプター性物質を含む層とを含み、
隣接し異なる色を呈する発光ユニット間にのみ、逆テーパー形状の隔壁を有する発光装置。 - 請求項1において、
前記隔壁を介して隣接し、異なる色を呈する第1の発光ユニットと第2の発光ユニットを有し、
前記隔壁の上面形状における長辺の長さは、前記第1の発光ユニットにおける、前記第2の発光ユニットに対向する辺の長さの90%以上である発光装置。 - 請求項1又は請求項2において、
前記隔壁を介して隣接し異なる色を呈する発光ユニット間における、前記有機化合物を含む層が分断されている発光装置。 - 請求項1乃至請求項3のいずれか一項において、
一方向に連続して設けられた同じ色を呈する発光ユニットは、同一の層からなる前記第2の電極を有し、
前記複数の発光ユニットを備える発光部の外側で、前記第2の電極と共通配線とが電気的に接続する発光装置。 - 請求項4において、
前記共通配線が、前記発光部の外側に周設されている発光装置。 - 請求項1乃至請求項5のいずれか一項において、
前記ドナー性物質は、アルカリ金属、アルカリ土類金属、希土類金属、アルカリ金属化合物、アルカリ土類金属化合物、又は希土類金属化合物である発光装置。 - 請求項1乃至請求項6のいずれか一項において、
前記有機化合物を含む層は、
発光物質を含む層を備えた第1の層と、
発光物質を含む層を備えた第2の層と、
前記第1の層と前記第2の層の間に形成された中間層と、を有する発光装置。 - 請求項1乃至請求項7のいずれか一項に記載の発光装置を表示部に有する電子機器。
- 請求項1乃至請求項7のいずれか一項に記載の発光装置を照明部に有する照明装置。
