Abstract
【解決手段】カラー強誘電性液晶装置は、スペーサで間隔を保って配置された2枚のガラス基板3・4の間に、強誘電性液晶材料2を備えている。ガラス基板3には、カラーフィルタ層5が設けられ、カラーフィルタ層5の表面は、該表面を平坦にする材料からなる平坦化層6で覆われている。上記ガラス基板3・4の内側の面には、電極構造7・8と、バリア層9・10と、配向層11・12とが設けられている。さらに、偏光子14で直線偏光された光が、暗状態での透過光を減少させるために、偏光層16がカラーフィルタ層5と液晶材料2との間に設けられる。

Claims (4)
- 2枚の基板の間に配置された液晶材料層と、上記2枚の基板のうち、外部光源からの光が入射する一方の基板の外側に偏光子を、他方の基板の外側に検光子を備えたセルからなる液晶装置であって、
上記他方の基板の内側にカラーフィルタ層を備えるとともに、上記カラーフィルタ層と上記液晶材料層との間に偏光層を備え、
上記セル内を上記外部光源からの光が透過する進行方向に対して、上記偏光子、上記液晶材料層、上記偏光層、上記カラーフィルタ層、上記検光子を順に備えてなり、
上記偏光層が配向された分子被膜からなり、上記検光子の透過軸と上記偏光子の透過軸とがほぼ平行であることを特徴とする液晶装置。 - 上記液晶材料層中に偏光色素を混入していることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶装置。
- 上記偏光層は、上記カラーフィルタ層にカラーフィルタおよび偏光機能の両方の機能を有する偏光層を設けた構成であることを特徴とする請求項1または2に記載の液晶装置。
- 上記被膜は、アゾ染料あるいはポリヨウ素化合物塩による有機染料分子からなることを特徴とする請求項1〜3の何れか1項に記載の液晶装置。
