Abstract

本発明は、高速記録用の追記型光記録担体、特にDVD+Rディスクに関する。通常、そのような記録担体は、少なくとも一つの基板層(3)と、基板層(3)上の有機色素材料の記録層(2)と、記録層(2)上部の金属反射層(1)と、を有する。記録層(2)と反射層(1)との界面において、より緩やかな温度勾配を生じさせ、機械的応力による剥離の問題を回避するため、金属反射層(1)の厚さを50nm以下の範囲に減少させることが提案される。記録層(2)と金属反射層(1)の間にある、厚さ50nm以下の誘電体層についても示した。

Description

本発明は、DVD+Rのような追記型光記録担体に関し、特に、データの高速記録に適合された単層DVD+Rに関する。
現在、高速DVD+R標準規格の開発は、極めて重要な事項となっている。現在の色素系の高速DVD+R媒体は、4倍速または6倍速までは適正な特性を示す。しかしながら出力マージンは、高速になるほど徐々に狭くなる。高速記録に要求される高い出力状態では、色素材料界面、すなわち有機色素材料で構成される記録層と、記録層の冷却用に設置された金属反射層との界面で、剥離が生じる可能性が高い。これらの問題は、有機色素材料で構成される記録層を有する追記型光記録担体、特にDVD+R媒体において高速記録を実現しようとした場合に顕著となる。しかしながら、色素には、(反射層との協働により)高反射ディスクが得られるという特有の高い透明性があり、記録ディスクが既存装置との下位互換性を有するようにするためには、色素を使用することが好ましい。
金属反射層の厚さは、通常約100nmである。金属反射層を設ける重要な理由は、この層の冷却能が大きいこと、すなわち熱容量が大きいことである。従って金属反射層の厚さが薄くなると、結果的に色素記録層の冷却効率が低下すると考えられる。色素自体は、熱伝導性が悪いため、金属反射層による効果的な冷却によって、記録層と金属反射層との界面近傍には、大きな温度勾配が生じる。この急な勾配のため生じる機械的応力によって、前述の剥離の問題が生じる可能性がある。
米国特許第5,718,961号明細書には、相変化式の光ディスクが示されており、このディスクには、第1の誘電体膜、第2の誘電体膜、記録膜および反射膜が、順次基板上に積層されている。反射層の厚さは、10から120nmの広い範囲にある。ZnO-BNを第1および第2の誘電体層として使用することにより、高い記録感度および熱安定性が得られ、記録中に生じた熱は、反射層の方に容易に拡散させることができる。

本発明の課題は、高記録速度で、記録層と金属反射層の界面での温度勾配が抑制され、剥離のような機械的な問題を回避することのできる、追記型光記録担体を提供することである。
上記の課題は、請求項1に記載の本発明の追記型光記録担体によって解決することができ、この追記型光記録担体は、
基板層と、
該基板層の上部の有機色素材料の記録層と、
該記録層の上部の、厚さが75nm以下の金属反射層と、
で構成される。
本発明は、一般的な解釈とは逆に、金属反射層の厚さを減少させることが有効であるという発見に基づくものである。厚さの減少によって冷却効率は低下するが、記録層と金属反射層との界面での温度勾配は、より緩やかになる。これにより機械的応力が抑制され、剥離が回避される。従って、実際には記録スタックにおける冷却能の低下によって、高速記録特性が向上する。これは本発明では、有機色素材料または相変化材料で構成された記録層を有する両記録担体に対して、本分野の専門家が共通に認識していたこととは逆のことが提案されることを意味する。
本発明の好適実施例は、従属項に記載されている。高速記録特性の向上は、金属反射層の厚さを75nm以下にすることで得られるが、厚さを50nm以下、特に30nm以下とすることで、さらなる向上が得られる。
別の好適実施例では、記録層と金属反射層との間に、追加の誘電体層が提供される。この誘電体層は、熱障壁として作用し、反射層の放熱能の低下と同等の効果を発揮することができる。例えばSiO2、ZnS、ZnS-SiO2混合物(例えば8:2)、TiO2または他の誘電体材料のような、追加の誘電体層を設置することによる吸収率低下の代償として、記録スタックの反射率は、わずかながら向上する。しかしながら、通常100nmの厚さの薄い記録層、またはk値の大きな色素を使用して、これを相殺することも可能である。ここでk値とは、複素屈折率の虚部である。
必要であれば、別の誘電体層を、記録層と基板層の間に設置することも可能である。これにより、特に記録スタック全体の安定性が向上する。少なくとも、記録層と金属反射層との間の第1の誘電体層は、厚さが50nm以下であり、特に25nm以下である。
金属反射層に好適な材料は、実質的に銀(Ag)で構成される。ただしAl、Auまたは他の金属のような、他の材料を用いることも可能である。
本発明を添付図面を参照して、より詳しく説明する。
図1には、DVD+Rディスクにおいて厚い反射層を使用した場合、特に100nmのAg層を使用した場合の、典型的な出力マージンを示す。図には、ディスクに記録されたビットの前縁および後縁のそれぞれの場合の、mW単位の記録出力に対する百分率単位のジッターが示されている。この出力マージンと、図2の薄い反射層の場合の出力マージンと比較する。なお図2では、DVD+RのAgで構成された反射層の厚さは、10nmである。ジッターは、記録出力の幅広い範囲、特に高記録出力側において、図1に示す厚い反射層において得られたジッターに比べて、小さくなっていることがわかる。
Ag(100nm)の厚い反射層1、色素記録層2(100nm)およびポリカーボネート基板層3(100nm)を有する従来のDVD+R記録スタックに、直流電力レベルを印加した後の温度分布を図3aに示す。図3aには示されていないが、UV硬化ラッカーによって、ダミー基板が厚い記録層の上に接着されている。色素材料は、熱伝導性が悪いため、反射層1による十分な冷却によって、反射層1と記録層2との界面近傍には大きな熱勾配が生じてしまう。この急勾配のため機械的応力が発生し、これにより反射層1と記録層2の間の界面で、剥離が生じ得る。
反射層1の厚さを減少させることにより、冷却はより不十分となるものの、結果的に図3bに示すように、温度勾配が緩やかになるという利点が得られる。図3bは、本発明による記録担体の第1の実施例に、交流電力レベルを印加後の温度分布を示したものである。ここで反射層は、厚さが約10nmであって、Agで構成されている。
本発明による記録担体の第2の実施例における熱分布は、図4に示されている。図3aの記録担体とは異なり、この場合、厚さ20nmのSiO2からなる追加の誘電体層5が、厚さ40nmの反射層1と記録層2との間に設置されている。図4には示されていないが、UV硬化式ラッカーによって、ダミー基板が厚さ40nmの反射層上に接着されている。また記録層2は、厚さが80nmに減少しているため、より効率的な吸収が可能となることは、到達最高温度が幾分上昇していることからも明らかである。追加の誘電体層5の設置によって、反射層1と記録層2の間の温度勾配を低減させることで、機械的応力を抑制し、剥離を回避することができる。
本発明による記録担体の第3の実施例の温度分布は、図5に示されている。この図では、Agで構成される反射層は、厚さが30nmで、未だ高反射率を維持しているが、熱容量は1/3.3に低下する。しかしながら本実施例では、熱勾配はより緩やかになっている。図5には示されていないが、ダミー基板は、厚い反射層の上部にUV硬化ラッカーによって接着されている。
図6および図7には、本発明による記録担体の2つの実施例を概略的に示す。図6には、図5に示す温度分布の場合の実施例を示す。図5に示す3層に加えて、第2のポリカーボネート基板層4(約0.6mm)が示されており、この層は、UV硬化ラッカーによって反射層1の上部に接着される。図7には、図4に示す温度勾配の場合の実施例を示す。図4に示す4層に加えて、第2のポリカーボネート基板層4(約0.6mm)が示されている。
各図に示されている実施例は、一例に過ぎないことは明らかである。層の厚さの異なる、多くの他の実施例および他の変更や、他の層の設置が可能である。本発明では、追記型光記録担体、特にDVD+R媒体において、広い電力マージンが提供されるという利点が得られる。また、記録速度の高速化が可能となる。さらに薄い反射層ではスパッタ時間が短くて済むため、短期間での製作が可能となり、製作コストの抑制が可能となる。

Claims (6)

  1. 基板層と、
    該基板層の上部の有機色素材料の記録層と、
    該記録層の上部の、厚さが75nm以下の金属反射層と、
    を有する追記型光記録担体。
  2. さらに、前記記録層と前記金属反射層との間に誘電体層を有することを特徴とする請求項1に記載の記録担体。
  3. 前記誘電体層は、厚さが50nm以下であり、特に25nm以下であることを特徴とする請求項2に記載の記録担体。
  4. さらに、前記記録層と前記基板層との間に誘電体層を有することを特徴とする請求項1に記載の記録担体。
  5. 前記金属反射層は、実質的に、Ag、Al、Auからなる群の材料で構成され、特にAgで構成されることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の記録担体。
  6. 前記金属反射層は、厚さが50nm以下であり、特に30nm以下であることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の記録担体。
