Abstract

999, 158. Electrolytic testing apparatus. VARTA A.G. May 23, 1962, No. 19914/62. Heading G1N. The pores of a hydrogen diffusion electrode, used for determining the pH value of a solution, are initially purged with the solution whose pH is to be measured. Electrode 4 forms one wall of a gas space, within body 5, to which hydrogen is supplied through tubes 1, 2. With cocks 3, 7 adjusted to isolate container 8 from tube 1 and electrode 4, solution is admitted through gastight cover 10, and when the cocks are subsequently turned to the positions shown solution is forced through the pores of the electrode. Cock 7 may be replaced by a valve, or both cocks may be dispensed with if solution is injected into container 8 from a pump. A second method consists of reducing the hydrogen pressure so that solution is drawn in through the pores of the electrode. Electrode 4 consists of a fine-pored layer adjacent space 12 and a coursepored layer in contact with the solution to be examined.
