Abstract

1384164 Testing watch cases OMEGA LOUIS BRANDT & FRERE SA 16 April 1973 [8 May 1972] 21386/72 Heading G1S To test a watch case 14 for leaks, the case is placed in an upper chamber 7 connected by a manometric tube 9 to a larger lower chamber 8, each chamber having an inlet/outlet valve 11, 12 and a closed-ended manometric tube 13 being provided to measure the pressure in the apparatus. Valve 12 is closed and valve 11 opened to feed pressurized gas to the chamber 7 and, via the tube 9, to the chamber 8 which is partially filled with liquid 10. The valve 11 is then closed to allow pressures to equalize, then valve 11 is opened briefly to allow the liquid to rise in tube 9 to a zero mark 15 on a scale 16. Thereafter any leaks in the case 14 will result in a lowering of pressure in chamber 7 and a further rise of liquid in the tube 9. As in Fig.3 (not shown) an auxiliary container (20) may be provided for supplying liquid to chamber 7 after this test such that the case 14 is immersed. Alternatively, as in Figs.4-7 (not shown), the chamber 7 can be permanently partly filled with liquid and the case 14 mounted on a plunger (36) for immersion. Then if valves 11 and 12 are opened to atmosphere, gas which has leaked into the case will leave the case and form a detectable train of bubbles in the liquid.
