In a sight glass plug the glass 7 is held in the plug by an edge 10 pressed over a resilient ring 8 of circular cross-section and the arrangement is such that, when the plug is screwed into position in the wall 2 of a chamber in which the liquid level to be observed, the pressure P within the chamber presses the glass 7 against the ring 8. 1,165,370. The fluid-tightness of a double walled enclosure is tested by introducing gaseous ammonia at approximately atmospheric pressure into the intermediate space 4 surrounding the impervious membrane 3 of a tank 1, and applying to the accessible inside surface of membrane 3, a coat of reactive substance such as a composition containing bromophenol blue and phosphoric acid which changes colour when in contact with ammonia, to indicate the position of any leak.
