Abstract

1,213,813. Testing a seal. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. Feb.9, 1968 [Feb. 10, 1967; Sept. 8, 1967], Nos. 6608/67 and 41150/67. Heading G1A. A seal is tested by applying a radio-active fluid under pressure to one side of it and monitoring for radio-activity arising from a leak on the other. A gas such as Krypton 85 may be used and it may be mixed with carbon dioxide, a geiger counter or a photo-multiplier and scintillation counter being used for monitoring. In one arrangement gas from a chamber is admitted into a cylinder having the seal in its end wall by withdrawal of a piston and returned to the chamber by the return of the piston after a predetermined time. In an alternative arrangement the gas mixture is held solid by liquid nitrogen and is allowed to sublimate or vaporize by withdrawal of the nitrogen and a chamber on the other side of the seal is monitored for radioactivity by pumping its contents past a geiger counter.
