Abstract

1,004,206. Measuring permeability. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Aug. 30, 1963 [Aug. 31,1962], No. 34382/63. Headings G1L and G1S. Apparatus for measuring the permeability of a porous barrier is characterized in that two equal volume chambers are provided and are connected by a differential pressure gauge 24, a gas reservoir 1 communicating with the two chambers through a porous barrier in each case being also provided, are barrier 13 being of unknown permeability, the other 12 being a standard barrier of known permeability, so that the permeability of the barrier 13 is deduced from the reading of the gauge 14 and the known permeability of the barrier 12. The reservoir 1 has an inlet pipe 2 with a valve 3 and containing a sonic jet 4 to maintain a constant valve feed flow. The barriers 12, 13 are cylindrical and the reservoir communicates with the inside of the cylinders by way of apertures 15,16. The annular chambers outside the barriers 12, 13 are connected to the reservoir 1 and to a pump 23 by way of pipes 17, 18, 19 containing valves 20,21, 22. The gauge 24 also connects these chambers and is in the form of a monometer, preferably containing dibutyl phthalate, having one inclined limb. In operation with the valve 3 closed and the valves 20, 21, 22 open the system is evacuated. The valve 3 is opened and the valves 20, 21, 22 closed and after a time the gauge 24 assumes a stable position. A scale 28 is provided to enable the pressure difference to be read directly and the unknown permeability may be calculated from a formula given in the Specification.
