996, 361. Gas sampling apparatus. BALZERS PATENT-UND LIZENZ ANSTALT OF BALZERS. March 24, 1964 [March 29, 1963], No. 12313/64. Heading G1B. A method for the continuous remote monitoring of the composition of air e.g. in mines for detection of methane, wherein air samples to be analysed are introduced into the gas collecting chamber K of a monitoring instrument connected to a point where air is to be sampled by a line L, comprises evacuating the chamber K before each measurement, by use of a pump P with a valve A closed and a valve B open, the evactuated chamber K being subsequently brought into communication with the line L by opening the valve A, with valve B closed, so that an air sample flows into the chamber K, the analysis of the sample then being carried out. A manometer M is provided for the measurement of gas pressures in the chamber K. Any number of lines L may be provided, each with its own connecting valve A. Various other arrangements of valves and connecting lines are described in the Specification whereby air may be continuously drawn through a line L by the pump P, samples being withdrawn from the air flow in the pipe line into the chamber K as desired. Connection may also be made to a source of gas which may be used as a flushing gas for various of the lines leading to the chamber K and the chamber itself. Furthermore, where the gaseous impurity in the air being tested is only present in very small quantities, a second pump may be interposed in the line between a valve A and the chamber K in order to introduce the air sample into this chamber after evacuation, at a pressure higher than atmospheric, whilst maintaining the required gas flow through the line L.
